Course Description

Hello, and welcome to the course where you will build an app for the Google Assistant. Are you excited?

This course will show you how to create an app for the Google Assistant and Google Home in Node.js!

You'll learn about Google Assistant development from scratch!

Assistants represent one of the major trends in 2020. Some have even suggested they'll eventually supplant our app-based ecosystem. With apps for Assistants, you're building an app that works on smart speakers, like Google Home, and devices like Android phones, Android watches.

App leaders like Apple, Amazon, and Google, who want to guarantee that people spend most of their time in their apps, are placing big bets on Assistants. And devices like Google Home are penetrating into our homes.

So, if the predictions turn right, this will open up a new channel for businesses to reach a large audience. And here is a BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU! Be one of the first people that know how to build apps for the Assistant. You can build it for your business or other people.

My name is Jana Bergant, and I'm a developer with over 20 years of experience. I'm an IT instructor teaching people new tech skills. Over 17000 people are already taking my course.

In the tutorial, we'll be building a sample app. Its purpose is only to show you how things work. We'll host our app on Firebase, so you'll learn how to use Firebase Realtime database and use Firebase functions. To get the most out of the course, you can work on this sample bot and also work on your own ideas. I've added assignments where you'll build your app.

For this course, YOU NEED PROGRAMMING SKILLS; you need at least basic node.js knowledge and basic expertise with GIT. And the best way to learn is to work with me all through the course. I'll be here all the way.

You DON'T NEED TO HAVE GOOGLE HOME; we will test on the simulator.

If you have any questions, let me know. If something is not clear, let me know. Contact me via the private messaging or Frequently asked questions, and we'll clear things up. This will help me and the course to get better!

This domain is still very new and changing rapidly. I'm working on making this course as fresh as it can be.

And remember, I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU. I help all my students at every step of development.

So, let's get started.

The course teaches you everything to deploy your own app but is really hard to follow. The interfaces of Actions Console are different now and some packages npm are had a different behavior now. You barely can see the code on the screen in some videos so you need to pause the video more than the necessary. Also, if you are expecting to learn something of Sentiment Analysis, the entire chapter is just a publicity hook to another course, so you will not learn anything about that.

I enjoyed Jana's approach and style to teaching the course. She comes across as knowledgeable and fun. I had already completed the Actions on Google codelabs, so there was not much new information. The coding examples were not really set up well for coding along (compared with other courses). What made it difficult that this course used the DialogflowFulfillment (agent) approach where the codelabs all used the Actions on Google (app). Also, the integration with RealTime Database was rushed. The Google sign-in section did not mention the importance of copying the ClientId. Instead, I just watched them and took some notes. The course could be improved by including more configuration pitfalls like the use of service accounts.

This is the 2nd course I take from Jana. I really like how she organizes the course. Starts w/ simple diagram to illustrate the thought process, and concepts were broken down into small enough chunks to maintain engagements. Examples are practical and always come with links to Github for future references.

This course is great... It takes you from basic to advanced topic and teaches you almost everything you need to know about google assistant. It's recommended for anyone who wants to know how to create apps for google assistant in a professional way. Thank You so much for this course :)

The course was very useful and covered all the topics very well, especially the fulfillment parts, which are probably more difficult for some students. One small point: the text in the transcripts is inaccurate, I suspect it was created using speech recognition as the errors look like recognition problems. Would it be possible to substitute the script that was being used for the lessons?

Great particle course, especially for those with a little bit of coding experience. Not for absolute beginners, but it's perfect to get a real world understand the foundations of Google Actions and Diagflow. The demo examples are a great reference which i still keep coming back to. Thanks Jana.

Very good course, I have no real experience in development en Actions on Google, so I learn a lot, but is a little outdated, I have some problems with the code and a research was necessary to resolve some issues. It will be great to use the Account Linking to know how to link the assistant account with the meetup account to deliver meetups to the final user and not just for me. In summary, a good course, but can be improved. Thanks.

Very good course in terms of coverage and explanation, however index.js (final version) was useless. It caused errors when deploying under fulfillment. I tried to debug but gave up after that took too long and was unsuccessful. The FAQ pointed to the full version of the final code which I used. This caused be to stop trying it out and just watch the videos. Not ideal. I did not contact the creator of the tutorial because I am sure someone else trying it recently (April 2018) would have run into the same problem. I would gladly revise to 4.5 or 5 stars if content would would for me (index.js).

This course was perfect for what I was looking for. Jana moves at a quick pace but explains everything well. A good basic course which has gotten me over the initial hurdle of creating Action on Google. I also managed to publish it to Google Assistant.

Im undertanding the content through the screnshots and videos, Jana Added subtitles to the videos making it way easier to follow up. She's catching up as fast as she can with Google changes, and even tho some things are a bit behind, the content is applicable and really clear... liking it so far.
