Graphic Design Bootcamp Part 2 (Udemy.com)

Project-Based Learning For Intermediate Designers: Use Photoshop, Lightroom, and Other Adobe Creative Cloud Programs

Created by: Derrick Mitchell

Last updated February 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 551 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Graphic Design Bootcamp Part 2 picks up where Derrick Mitchell's original bootcamp left off. It's built for students who already know their way around Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign and now want to work like a professional: managing client projects, tracking time, invoicing, and pitching for freelance work. Co-instructor Jennah Mitchell joins for the freelancing sections. At 4.8 hours and 30 lectures across five sections, it's a compact add-on rather than a standalone course, and the syllabus leans more business than technique.

Reviewers consistently like Derrick and Jennah's teaching style, calling it clear, relatable, and easy to follow even for non-native English speakers. Several say the freelancing and client-management sections are the real value, with practical advice on invoicing and finding client work. The complaints cluster around depth and pacing: one reviewer with a design degree felt she wasn't learning much new despite the Intermediate label, another said Derrick sometimes rambles off on tangents, and a lower-rated review argued the course spends too much time on basic tasks like a 76-minute product photo edit rather than getting to print and client-ready workflows.

For students who finished Part 1 and want the business side of design, this fills a real gap most Udemy design courses skip. It's not the place to look for advanced production techniques or deeper Adobe skills, and the short runtime means some sections feel thin. Recently updated, with a large private Facebook community for feedback, it's a reasonable add-on purchase rather than a course to take on its own.

Best forPart 1 grads who want freelance and business skills, not more software basics
Skip it ifYou want deep print production training or haven't taken Part 1 yet

Pros

  • Freelancing 101 section covers invoicing, time tracking, and finding client work
  • Derrick and Jennah get praised for clear, relatable teaching together
  • Project-based lessons build on Part 1 rather than repeating software basics
  • Private Facebook group with over 15,700 students for feedback and networking

Cons

  • Only 4.8 hours and 30 lectures, thin for an intermediate-level course
  • Some reviewers say Derrick rambles or goes off on tangents
  • A design-degree holder found little new material despite the Intermediate label
I love how Derrick and Jenna explain topics, individually and as well as together. They are clear, concise and relatable! I highly recommend.

Meant for students who finished Part 1, not designers starting from scratch or already advanced.

What to Expect:

We will be using a mix of Lightroom, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator for project lessons; the industry-standard applications for graphic design. You'll also build on your vocabulary and knowledge from the first bootcamp; learning more relevant terms and design practices to help you create pixel-perfect projects for print and web.

If you aren't looking to learn design for a job, don't worry - this is a great course for you too! Many students are non-designers looking to make fun projects on the side, or students looking to spice up their resumes and social media graphics, and teachers looking to add some creative elements to their homework materials - the list goes on and on.

There is also a private Facebook group with over 15,700 students and counting, which is an awesome resource for you to take advantage of while you go through the course. The group is an excellent place to post projects, get insightful critiques, and network with other like-minded students and working professionals all over the world.

All project files are included as a free download at the beginning of each section, and you are welcome to use the files however you want, or simply to follow along with the projects as you move through the lessons. There are also bonus materials provided to help you work with real clients, such as project proposals and contracts, that Derrick and Jennah (Derrick's wife and project manager) have used to land graphic design and web development projects.

If you see anything in any of the lectures that no longer apply with the software update, please let us know! We are doing our best to keep this course up to date and continue to add value for you.

This is my second course from Derrick. I was familiar with Adobe before my courses but I hardly knew anything about the tools, program and resources available. I have to say both courses have made me feel much more confident and taught me a lot about Adobe. I really appreciated having Jennah in the last two sections speaking on her experience and process of doing the "boring stuff".

I never considered myself "advanced" in Adobe CC, but so far, I feel like I'm not learning a whole lot of new things. (For reference, I have an associates degree in graphic design)

Loved the course. I watched it in one day, so that says enough. I especially loved the part with your wife. It was interesting to hear your and hers view on everything. I did sometimes had the feeling that the projects were a little bit random. Either way, I learned a lot. Thank you for all the tips!

In the beginning, I wanted to find a good course. That will tell me the hidden secrets in the graphic designing industry. Fortunately, I have to tell, that this was the right course. They are not just the masters of their work but good motivators. Good course for people with mid knowledge in designing.

Very good course. I really enjoyed the first part which was awesome with tons of information and techniques. This second part is also valuable for some advanced techniques. I like the sincerity of Derrick sharing his thoughts through the process and the part with his wife talking about the real world of business. Thanks for these two courses.

You mention a lot of scortcuts and tools which you teached in Bootcamp 1 course, but it is good to rehearse those. It is also coolt that you show real works. I hope to learn more cool effects like fractial, which i colud use on my own projects. I also hope that you will show more advance techinques and tools, because for me there are lesser new things to learn than it was during bootcamp 1.

By Kimberly Greenough on 6/19/2019

Very good course for going over additional Adobe product techniques and for learning more about the business part of graphic design (for freelance). Does not go into applying for in-house work. Much more condensed than their Part 1 Bootcamp, but feels like an appropriate follow-up and length course. I recommend this mostly for the business insights they provide for freelancing.

So far I’m really disappointed in this course. I was hoping for a course that shows how to work for clients, send the work to print, what to look out for when you send to print etc. I don’t think the time of this course is well spend. I would expect it to be more structured and cut to the bone. 4 hours is not a lot of time to learn something new, and you expect the course to be very time efficient. I don’t think it is. So far the course has contained a 14 min. video with an app that I already knew and 76 minutes of taking pictures of a product and editing it in Lightroom and Photoshop. 20 minutes on isolating a product in Photoshop which is very basic and not advanced graphic design. Most of the time we see the teacher playing around with the photos he has taken but I don’t see how that is super relevant. Why not learn this in a photographer course instead? To me it seems like he is doing his job for a client and it’s convenient that we follow along for this course. It’s a win win but I miss the point. I don’t think this is advanced graphic design. I have a degree in branding & marketing management and not a degree in graphic design, but this stuff is very basic, and I was expecting to have learned something in this course by now. I was actually afraid that the advanced class was too advanced for me but I’m glad I didn’t go for the beginner class. To compare I bought two courses at the same time, the other course is 12,5 hours for the same price and the time is well spend as the teacher is very structured and you learn something new all the time. I'm almost half way through and hope it will get better.

I love how the projects we worked on are already the things clients are looking for, each lecture is very well explained and to the point. At the end of the course, I really appreciate that you took the time to provide not only resources for inpiration, but also helpful ways to stay motivated when work and communication with clients gets tough. Overall excellent course!

Excellent, valuable information for starting and succeeding in graphic design! I appreciate that Derrick and Jennah believe in their students and their ability to freelance and/or make it a full-time career or business! They also offer real-world advice, lessons, tools, tips, and tricks for excelling in this field. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
