Course Description

This course covers 2D & 3D Modeling with DJI drones and Agisoft's Metashape.  In this class students will learn about capturing images with their DJI drones for creating models.  Students will then walk through the process of generating 2D & 3D models with a software package known as Metashape, developed by Agisoft.

The basic principles of Drone Modeling will be covered in this course.  Capture images, import to a modeling program, aligning images, generating a point cloud, generating a 3D mesh, and generating a texture file.  Most programs for drone modeling follow this workflow.  So even if you're not a Metashape user, this class will still walk you through the basics of the modeling process.

A fair amount of the course will cover capturing drone images for 2D & 3D Models.  We introduce several capture applications and show flight setups for creating models.  If your initial flights aren't good, your model will most likely turn out poorly as well.  So focusing on initial image captures is very important in this course.

We will introduce Metashape Standard Edition and Pro Edition for your modeling process.  While other programs allow you to achieve similar results, their interfaces vary from program to program.  Metashape is easy enough for beginners to work with, and powerful enough for professional drone modeling applications as well.

Ground Control Points and Advanced Modeling Topics

This course on drone modeling with Agisoft's Metashape is designed for beginners who are interested in generating 2D & 3D Models.  While the course gives a brief over view of manual image alignment and Ground Control Points, it does not get into the great detail and complexity of utilizing Ground Control Points (GCPs).  If you're approaching the professional level of drone modeling you will require a more advanced class than this one.

Pilot in Command's Responsibilities

In this course we'll be discussing a lot of automated drone flight.  If you're intending on using a drone for the purposes of mapping and modeling you should have a basic understanding of your drone, the rules and regulations where you're flying, and your personal responsibility as a drone pilot.  This course does not cover basic drone flight principles nor flight regulations, and it's up to you to be aware of flight safety and legal flight requirements.

Since the 90's I've been involved in the Tech industry in one fashion or other.  For a decade I was in Telecommunications working with Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless, and US Cellular.  During my time with the big carriers I spent a lot of time creating training packages for technicians and engineers working on wireless switches.

Since 2006 my focus switched toward smaller imaging business topics.  Digital Photography, image editing, drone work, 360 imaging and more.  Additionally I've been developing websites for RV Parks and Resorts in the Southwest.  I've taken my interests in travel and imaging, and merged them together into my small business today.

I have tied my network engineering knowledge together with more artistic endeavors in order to create RLC Design Services.  And now I'm bringing some of my skill sets to Udemy.  If you're interested in effective website development, SEO, photography, and drone photography keep an eye on my new course offerings.

This course is acceptable only for absolute beginners with no background or specialization in Geomatics or Geospatial sciences. However, the instructor contradicts his own course description by repeatedly labeling it as both "beginner and intermediate." The lessons suffer from severe repetition; the entire core content could easily be delivered in just two hours. Since the instructor is not a Geospatial science expert his attempts to explain advanced concepts contain noticeable scientific errors.

Course was good but it shows the last update was in 2019. During the course Rich said that he would update the course. One of the main things that I would have liked to have seen are modules or discussions about using a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise Drone with the RTK Module. Also, using an RTK Base Station or Input from another Government Agency like a Department of Transportation for RTK Accuracy.

Yes,,I have been assisting guys with DJI Phantom 4 but did not use one and this course will assist in preparing me to get into the use of software processing end using Agisoft. This course is more detailed and more informative providing alternative recommendations to capture applications and also the use of these apps during the planning and capture stage of image acquisition.

Excellent work from an excellent instructor! Richard explains everything in a very clear and practical way. He also makes you feel like you know him, which is a big plus. After completing the course I asked a technical question about a specific job I have to do and Richard provided a very helpful and analytic answer within one hour, which is remarkable. Highly recommended class for anyone looking to dig into drone photogrammetry!

The course is great. I've tried putting together 3d models with Drone Deploy, Pix4d and now Metashape. I've not been successful in putting together a 3D Model that's good enough to give to a client. I've followed all the instructions but just can't seem to get any models to turn out.

Very informative. And I appreciate that you share and walk through some mistakes and ramifications of those mistakes. I am interested to know if there is the GCP/GIS follow on course available. My current point of view involves a desire to re-create in 3D models, as faithfully and GIS accurately as practical, sites of interest such that they can be part of a virtual reality training experiences with minimal visual anomalies. And those site models must accurately "fit into" a larger 3D model representation of the earth. I believe those interests line up pretty well with a course explaining GCP's , PPK vs. RTK, GIS, ground station's, etc.. and including limitations that will still prevent 'perfect' recreations of sites/buildings.

This course is great for those who want to know how to process their captured drone data and tips for flying to get good modelling data. It helped me gain valuable knowledge as a beginner in drone capture. Rich explains and shows the Metashape processing workflow very well making this a valuable resource for me to come back to and refer to while I gain experience out in the field flying and experimenting, and in the home office processing. I highly recommend it.

I've been watching Rich's videos for a while, yet just got into drones in the last 6 months. We happen to use the same systems(close) and I did not have a clue how to get to where I want to be(and will). Absolutely amazing coverage. I'm a CGC and trying to find a better angle as I'm getting older and fell in love with the technology and results I've experienced thus far. He is a great teacher. Thank YOU Rich! I've been a 107 for a few months now, with about 13 COAs.

Went over a basic tutorial of metashape and how to create models with drones. The instructor does have knowledge of the subject and answers questions in a timely manner. I do wish that there would be a few examples of the higher versions of the maps. He did a lot of low quality. Maybe one of high quality.. Very complex map as an example were he merged a few chunks.

The course covers a lot of topics and the presenter's style is engaging. It is an excellent course (full 5 starts) if you are a beginner. For intermediate level I would prefer a bit more advanced explanations of options as well as more personal experiences and recommendations (e.g. which settings are the best quality/performance ratio or his "default" settings when working for customers etc).
