Course Description

What is Statics and how will it help me? Statics is typically the first engineering mechanics course taught in university-level engineering programs. It is the study of objects that are either at rest, or moving with a constant velocity. Statics is important in the development of problem solving skills. It teaches you to think about how forces and bodies act and react to one another. You learn how to analyze word problems, pull out the important information and then solve. One of the most important aspects of this course is the use of free body diagrams. Free body diagrams (FBDs) are used endlessly in many engineering courses and this course is where you will perfect your FBD drawing skills. The material and thought processes learned in this class will be of great benefit to you in any other application where you are analyzing relationships between objects and applying math concepts. Why is this course better than the others? Have you ever been in a class and been frustrated by the lack of fully-worked examples? This will not be that class. I understand the frustration - I used to feel the same way. Because of that, I teach my classes in a way that I would've preferred as a student. Handwritten notes, simple explanations, and plenty of examples in a variety of difficulty levels. You will not find PowerPoint slides here. To test your knowledge there are exams. In case you get stuck, video solutions are provided. I also don't assume you know more than you do - we'll start with the basics and work our way up to more complex material. What will I learn in this course? Some of the topics we will cover: - Vector and scalar operations - Cartesian vectors - Projection of a force along a line - Free body diagrams - 2-D and 3-D equilibrium for particles and rigid bodies - Moments of forces - Couple moments - Methods of joints and sections - Centroids - Moments of inertia - and more! What do I need to know before starting? The typical prerequisites for this class are Physics 1 and Calculus. We will be using a few derivatives and integrals so you should be familiar with those concepts. We will cover everything else you need. Is there a recommended textbook? I, along with most students I've taught, really like the Engineering Mechanics - Statics text by Hibbeler. I graduated from Auburn University with a M.S. and PhD in Aerospace Engineering. After graduation I began worked as a Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin. After working in industry for 8 years I decided to focus on teaching full time.
I have 18+ years of teaching experience and have helped 1000's of students transform from freshmen to successful engineers. Some of the courses I teach include: Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, MATLAB, Numerical Analysis, Controls, Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. I have taught at Auburn University, University of North Texas and Texas Christian University.
I believe in teaching my courses in a way that I wanted to be taught when I was in school...plenty of examples, not a lot of theory. Many instructors don't understand the learning needs of their students. They give complicated lectures full of theory but then hardly ever work out examples. The examples they do work tend to be simple or the examples already presented in the course textbook.

A super great course! I was taking it concurrently with my college Statics/ Strength of Materials class but felt I didn't have a strong enough foundation. This teacher explains EVERYTHING, CLEARLY AND CONCISELY with a lovely set of notes. My physics and trig/calc background was weak but I was more than able to fill in the gaps with this course. I couldn't recommend it more and can't emphasize enough how thankful I am for Ms. Qualls for helping me set a strong foundation for the rest of my engineering career! THANK YOU!!!

I had to take this in college class during COVID-19 where the class instructor only uploaded PDFs of the class with no descriptions. As a result, I took this class on Udemy and it was a lot better than I expected. The instructor provides an extremely clear description of the material in the class. I received A+ in my college class just by taking this course on Udemy. I highly recommend it.

Dr Qualls has a soothing presentation. She performs everything using pen and paper adding to the idea that a student can do the activities if they print out and follow along using the notes. The course also follow's Hibbeler's text closely but not slavishly, so one can seek further answers there. Dr. Qualls also answers questions nicely and even responds to Internet cranks and odd commenters who thinks they have been insulted quite gracefully.

Very good overall, I'm getting more of the Professors classes. I feel the course definitely gave me feel of what to look for in the classroom. The professor had really good examples, the only issues is maybe more in depth examples but the course was awesome!!!!!
