Introduction to networking for complete beginners (Udemy.com)

Learn elementary networking concepts in less than 60 minutes. Great before going for General Networking, MTA or CCNA

Created by: Marious Kuriata

Last updated February 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 18,800 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short primer for people who have never touched networking. The syllabus shows 24 lectures in three sections: why networks exist, the ipconfig, ping and traceroute commands, a look at Cisco gear, basic home network troubleshooting, wireless problems, and a few bonus videos. The listing says 60 minutes, but the content actually runs closer to 111. It is built as a warm-up before General Networking, MTA or CCNA, and it says so. The only requirement is basic Windows skills.

Reviewers mostly praise clarity. Words like straight to the point, easy to digest and clear come up again and again, and even a reader who already works with firewalls and routers called the explanations precise. The complaints are about depth and polish. One reviewer wanted more definitions and examples, another calls it high level, one says it uses older products, and one wanted livelier delivery and animations.

It holds a 4.3 rating from about 18,800 reviews, with roughly three in four at four or five stars. A big middle group of 3,513 three-star ratings fits the picture: useful, but light. Because it is free and was last updated in February 2026, the cost of trying it is just an afternoon. Take it as a first hour that helps you decide whether to commit to a certification track. If you already work in IT, expect to skim.

Best forTotal beginners who want a quick, plain-English first look at networking before starting CCNA or MTA.
Skip it ifYou want labs, real depth or current hardware, or you already know IPs, firewalls and ping.

Pros

  • Explanations that reviewers call clear, direct and easy to digest for beginners
  • Covers ipconfig, ping and traceroute, so there is something to try on a real PC
  • Short enough to finish in one sitting, with a clear path on to MTA or CCNA
  • Free, with about 269,000 students and 18,800 reviews behind its 4.3 rating

Cons

  • High level, and one 2-star reviewer wanted more definitions and examples
  • One reviewer says it leans on older products, another wanted livelier delivery and animations
  • No certificate and only two quizzes, so there is little to practise with
Great intro course to networking. Easy to understand concepts and some useful tips for everyday computing and diving deeper

The Beginner label fits. It assumes no networking background and only asks for basic Windows skills.

Although I already have an idea in networking, I really learned a lot about it from the lesson. From the router to the firewall, and to IP address and netmask. i also learned about the cisco device where the other devices are connected to connect to the network.
