Course Description
The Internet of Things is growing fast, and developers have the potential to unlock the potential of IoT for the connected home and beyond. This course is designed to provide developers with an introduction to IoT and voice-first user experiences, using Amazon’s Alexa platform as an example. We’ll give you an overview of Amazon Echo, the device that TechCrunch says “proves the viability of voice-based home computing.” Then you’ll meet Alexa, the voice service that powers Amazon Echo, and learn how third-party developers can add new capabilities, called skills, to Alexa. We will discuss the Alexa Skills Kit and explain how to create a voice app using AWS Lambda. Finally, we’ll help you understand the differences between building mobile applications and voice experiences and provide best practices for voice design.

Amazon Alexa
Alexa, the voice service that powers Amazon Echo, provides capabilities, or skills, that enable customers to interact with devices in a more intuitive way using voice. Examples of skills include the ability to play music, answer general questions, set an alarm or timer, and more.
The Alexa Skills Kit is a collection of self-service APIs, tools, documentation and code samples that make it fast and easy for you to add skills to Alexa. You can also use the Smart Home Skill API, a new addition to the Alexa Skills Kit, to easily teach Alexa how to control your cloud-controlled lighting and thermostat devices. All of the code runs in the cloud – nothing is on any user device.
In our courses, you will learn how to build engaging voice experiences.

The course was enlightening in some points. I'm Brazilian and I'm interested in creating Alexa Skills in Portuguese BR. The course helped me to ask questions. (O curso foi esclarecedor em alguns pontos. Sou brasileiro e estou interessado na criação de Alexa Skills em português BR. O curso me ajudou a tirar dúvidas).

Overall a brief, but helpful introduction and high-level overview to the Amazon Echo product and development of new skills for Alexa on AWS Lambda. While not updated for the latest products or development screenshots, the course covers fundamental design concepts and processes in an easy-to-follow and professional format.

Nice Intro to alexa world. Good Job But I suggest to the lecturer to speak or explain very slowly, because for people who don't have english as mother tongue, it is very difficult, when things are explained fastly.

Content is a bit dated now For example in the developer portal there are new methods for creating the interaction model. The types of skills have also changed therefore the interface for this has also changed. The course does give a good overview of how the Echo works as well as what makes a good skill.

If you want to get started with Alexa then this free tutorial is the best first step! It is not straight forward and you will have to use your skills as a developer to figure out some minor issues as some of the screens and setting have changed on AWS Lamda & developer.aws.com/ASK and not updated here. It was unclear where to find the Intent Schema which I ended searching for online and copying & editing from https://developer.amazon.com/public/solutions/alexa/alexa-skills-kit/docs/developing-an-alexa-skill-as-a-lambda-function. I have tested and published the skill. The skill is not showing up in the developer dashboard yet. Perhaps after approval from Amazon it will pop up. Other than that it's all easy peasy.

I thought it covered most of the material well, and at a decent pace. I liked how straight forward the process is and how Amazon has made it free to try their developer tools.

I learn something new today. So, in the example of what is my favorite color, I first has to teach it, so it can remember and can be retrieved later. I supposed this is private info. For other information such as what is the temperature today, it will gather from some source and give me that info. This is interesting and useful!

I've had my Echo for a couple of weeks now and have anxious to try and build a Skill for her. I started with this course and just finished submitting the "What's my favorite color?" skill outlined in the course. I am excited about executing it and trying it out. From there, I'll continue to take courses to learn more and start building more complicated Skills. Thanks again for breaking it down so well! I would DEFINITELY recommend this course to my friends!

This was a short, focused overview of how to build a skill using ASK, the Alexa Skills Kit. There is much more to explore but this gave me a great framework for building skills. I went through the course in an afternoon. My one criticism is that the slides showing code were blurry. Regardless, highly recommended.

The Videos are highly detailed jumping from various different amazon developer services and can get a bit confusing. Second to last session talks about Utterances, slots and intents and refers to a page not found but only buried inside the original code example. It is a very intense overview and highly challenging to a new comer. But once the big picture appears in the head, there is a sense of ease that comes over the entire process. You will need to create multiple accounts. Be patient. Although the videos are fairly short, you will find yourself and a stop and go routine in order to grasp it all. Cheers!
