Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,891 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Bogdan Stashchuk's course covers the Linux shell from zero: installing Docker to spin up a Linux container, then working through files and directories, permissions, users, processes, scripting, networking and environment variables. It runs 5.8 hours across 63 lectures and 12 sections, all command line, no GUI. The syllabus leans toward software developers, network engineers and DevOps engineers who need the basics fast, and requirements list nothing beyond basic computer skills.
Reviewers like the hands-on format and say Stashchuk explains clearly, with one calling Linux "demystified" and another praising the technical detail from the ground up. At 4.6 stars across 1,891 ratings it holds up well. The complaints cluster around depth: a few reviewers say the course teaches commands without enough real-life use cases or troubleshooting, and one called the "Complete" in the title a stretch given how many topics it leaves out. Another wanted disk mounting and resizing covered. One reviewer said the setup section runs long, and one found the instructor's accent hard to follow.
For beginners who just want working shell skills without a long buildup, this course delivers in under six hours and it was refreshed as recently as March 2026. Anyone chasing real-world scenarios or advanced administration, like disk management, should plan on a follow-up course after this one.
Pros
- Fully hands-on: every topic paired with shell commands you run yourself
- Uses Docker so you can spin up a Linux container on any OS in seconds
- Covers users, permissions, scripting, networking and env variables in one pass
- Refreshed as recently as March 2026, unusually current for a 2020 course
Cons
- Light on real-world use cases; some reviewers wanted more why and when, not just commands
- Skips more advanced topics like disk mounting and resizing
- One reviewer found the instructor's accent hard to follow
Covers everything you need to know to operate a Linux system without being too heavy on unnecessary details. Great stuff!
Listed as All Levels but really built for true beginners; requirements ask only for basic computer skills.

A lot of setup explanation, which could have been cut short.
By Yashvi Pandya on 7/30/2024
This course offered a lot of practical experience and was not a boring lecture. It was straight to the point and I know more about Linux and have my own notes to look back on. I recommend this course as the instructor and lessons are straightforward and understandable, as well as applicable even if you don't have a Linux operating system.

It was very nice, there was a logical build up to new information each lesson and Bogdan's demonstrations were easy to follow. I liked the exercise at the end writing a very simple script, which made me think that an extra section with more such challenges or workbooks to put into practice what we've learned, would have been a nice addition, but I really liked the course, 5 stars!

This course provided a basic and concise overview on the fundamentals of Linux terminal commands. I felt that Bogdan did a great job explaining the content in a very simple and straightforward manner. Although he does have an accent, I did not find any issues with his delivery of the content and I still learned the material just fine. I would recommend his course for those seeking to learn the basics of Linux at an entry level.

I am in the middle of the course, however, I already have the overall impression. Bogdan is a really good teacher and explains concepts of Linux in a clear and concise way, has good presentation skills. Thank you very much for this course Bogdan, it helped me to learn new things and systemize the knowledge that I have already had. Keep it up.

I really loved this course and I took a lot from it. I wished I learned the material presented in this course 20 years ago:). I would suggest adding an explanation of docker containers including their purpose and how they work somewhere on the beginning of the course. Keep doing amazing job Bogdan!

I totally got what I wanted out of this course, which was a basic understanding of how to manage a Linux system and to learn about the tools and commands that I need to do so. Bogdan gives the impression of a very knowledgeable teacher and the way he explains the topics was to my liking. I used a lot of time reading the man pages of different commands in between chapters and I recommend everyone who wants an even deeper understanding of what is taught in the course to do the same. Maybe for the future I would love to see more practical challenge tasks whenever it's appropriate.

I learn so much from ALL of Bogdan's courses. I started with his course JavaScript Bible and was hooked. I love how he teaches, and he explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Bogdan is also AMAZING about responding to questions. This is a must have course for anyone wanting to learn Linux!
By Mohammad Zia Khan on 10/25/2020
This is the best course for anyone who has never seen Linux. This is the only course for "absolute" beginners which teaches the fundamentals like what is kernal, shell, command, process etc while other courses starts directly with CLI. Instructor Bogdan taught this course very well utilizing his vast experience. Thank you Bogdan! :D

Another very well-done course by Dr. Stashchuk. He covers enough of the basics to enable the student to get around Linux without having to spend hours and hours of time bogged down in details which do not promote learning. Also, Dr. Stashchuk's English speaking ability and accent are very acceptable (and this is an assessment from a native-born American speaker of English).
