Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,852 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, focused course on running open large language models on your own hardware instead of paying for ChatGPT or Gemini. Maximilian Schwarzmüller walks through the two main tools for the job, LM Studio and Ollama, covering setup, hardware requirements, and quantization before moving into real tasks like OCR, PDF summarizing and prompting. At 3.9 hours across 59 lectures it stays practical rather than theoretical, and it assumes no coding background, just basic familiarity with how chatbots work.
Reviewers consistently call the explanations clear and well paced, with several first-time AI users saying the course gave them an easy, approachable way into a topic they found intimidating. Melissa Foxx, who already knew Ollama, said she still picked up new material and called the delivery professional. The complaints are narrower: one reviewer flagged that the LM Studio sections lag behind the app's current interface and needed outside research to fill gaps, which fits a fast-moving tool. Another hit a loading problem getting started, though that reads as an isolated glitch rather than a pattern.
At 235 minutes for a paid course, this sits on the lean side, and that is by design. It will not turn anyone into an AI engineer, but for someone who wants to stop paying for a chatbot subscription and get open models running locally this week, it delivers exactly that. The rating sits at 4.7 from over 1,800 reviews, and the course was updated in November 2025, recent enough that most of the walkthroughs should still track. Worth it if local AI is the goal, not the whole curriculum.
Pros
- Covers both LM Studio and Ollama, not just one tool
- Includes real tasks: image OCR, PDF summaries, API integration
- Reviewers say explanations are clear even for AI beginners
- Updated November 2025, recent for a fast-changing space
Cons
- Short course at under 4 hours, light on depth for advanced users
- One reviewer says the LM Studio sections lag behind the current app interface
- No coding exercises or quizzes to practice with
I'm learning but the course is out of date (so far) with respect to LM Studio (significant) and the models being used (less significant). Requires a lot of side research.
Listed as All Levels; built for chatbot users and developers new to running models locally, with no programming required to follow along.

Experience as (Web) Developer
Starting out at the age of 12 I never stopped learning new programming skills and languages. Early I started creating websites for friends and just for fun as well. Besides web development I also explored Python and other non-web-only languages. This passion has since lasted and lead to my decision of working as a freelance web developer and consultant. The success and fun I have in this job is immense and really keeps that passion burningly alive.
Starting web development on the backend (PHP with Laravel, NodeJS, Python) I also became more and more of a frontend developer using modern frameworks like React, Angular or VueJS in a lot of projects. I love both worlds nowadays!
I also build full-stack applications and acquired expert DevOps and cloud computing knowledge - proven by the many AWS certifications I hold (incl. the top-level Solutions Architect Professional certification).
As a self-taught developer I had the chance to broaden my horizon by studying Business Administration where I hold a Master's degree. That enabled me to work in a major strategy consultancy as well as a bank. While learning, that I enjoy development more than these fields, the time in this sector greatly improved my overall experience and skills.

I like this course it gave a great overview i'm new to AI i've been using Chat GDP for a while but this gave me a whole new perspective of things to look forward to

I'm learning but the course is out of date (so far) with respect to LM Studio (significant) and the models being used (less significant). Requires a lot of side research. As with most Academind courses I've taken things are simply not kept very current.
By Melissa Foxx on 5/16/2026
Really enjoyed this course, even though I already knew a lot about ollama I still learned a lot. Course is presented _very_ professionally and to which am looking forward to taking further courses by Max :)

This was amazing really learned a lot and I'm running a local self hosted AI although the hardware isn't quite there yet to match what's commercially available

Great run through of the topics covered. No lecture was too long. Overrall length of the course was good. Pacing of different modules was nicely paced as well.
By Uwe Schwenk on 4/17/2026
An interesting overview on the concept and very useful information even for someone like me who has extensive experience on the subject. One suggestion from my side would be to emphasize a bit more the need to verify AI output prior to use.

Maximilian’s course on Local LLMs via Ollama & LM Studio was phenomenal. The details were superb, I went from knowing nothing to having a complete understanding of LLMs and how to run them locally. The deep dive into Ollama was my major highlight. I'm now onboarded and excited to keep experimenting!

I decided to take this course to find an alternative to GitHub Copilot for software development. Well, the course certainly helped me with this. Yet, it gave a bit more. I mean, now I know how to plug an LLM into my own application and use it to implement things that are really hard to implement any other way. Still, I guess it would be nice if the author mentioned the Continue plugin for VS Code in the course as a way to use Ollama models for development. Such an addition would make it even more valuable in my opinion.
By Michael Harings on 2/5/2026
I spent more hours trying to configure lmstudio.ai on my computers than the length of this course! I'd like to do some tasks rather than just listen to settings all the time.
By João Paulo Fricks on 2/5/2026
This course was a good introduction to working with AI models locally. It clearly demonstrated the practical steps involved and I appreciated learning how to handle them directly. However, it’s important to note that running more complex models effectively requires significant hardware resources. Overall, it’s a valuable step towards understanding the concepts and tools behind AI.
