Course Description

Markdown Mastery: Simple Yet Powerful Writing Format

Are you looking for a writing format not encumbered by commercial, closed-format? Would you like that format to be based on plain text? However, not complex like HTML.

In this course, students will learn about the Markdown format which is great as a source writing format for notes, outlines, blog posts, and perhaps even a novel. Academic theory, technical demos, and practical examples are all balance in this course to provide a comprehensive treatment of Markdown and its various uses.

Course Outline

Introduction and Setup provides an introduction to this course and setup the editor used throughout the course.

Once we understand the benefits and purpose of Markdown and have an editor ready to go, we start off with Markdown Basics that covers all the core aspects of the Markdown syntax (formatting).

With the foundations in place, we move on to extended or enhanced flavor (variations) of Markdown. These enhancements have been nearly universally adopted, they are nearly as well supported as the original core of Markdown.

With the Markdown format primer out of the way, the course shifts from technical execution of various features of Markdown to practical examples and use-cases of Markdown in action.

Course Features

Presentations provide audio/video training of conceptual ideas. Since few like slide-ware presentations, slide-presentations are kept to a minimum.

Screencasts provide a video of the instructor's computer system with any actions, commands, or screens displayed and narrated. There is nearly 1 hour of screencast based video training in order to step through each of the various aspects of this course.

Special Notes

The technical (formatting) parts of this course are also part of the "Git Complete" course. However, much of this course is unique -- especially the practical examples provided.

This was really useful. At first I thought I'd wasted my money and that I could've learned this course using a small cheat sheet. However, I think the description/use of the tools was extremely valuable. I also appreciated seeing the difference between different flavors of markdown. It is a little outdated as others have said, but you can find where the stackedit.io tools have moved with little effort. Worth the money!

the instructor seemed nice but this class definitely did not deliver on my expectations. he stated he would avoid slides and be hands on yet literally they took up half the class. there were no exercises or quizzes to reinforce the knowledge either. key functionality like centering text weren't even discussed and that is important. i learned a couple cool tricks but i probably could have learned more by researching it online. i don't recommend paying for this class. spend the hour reading on the web and you will get all the knowledge you need for free.

Just starting. Good so far. Course uses v4 StackEdit.io, which is an older version. The instructions don't line up with with current version (v5) at times - specifically in how to enable/disable GIT friendly flavored markdown. The older version can be found at stackedit.io/editor. Beyond that minor issue, it's a good course.

StackEdit has been updated to version 5 since this course was published, which has changed the settings options so you can't carry out a couple of bits of the course as instructed. Otherwise, the course has been really good and Jason is a great instructor.

Jason Taylor takes the student through some of the common features of Markdown. He's easy to understand and follow along with the lessons. It's an introductory course but there's enough content to get a good feel for what you can do with the language.

This is a good course. The videos are short (my preference), and the course is teaching me exactly what I need to know. Good job! I feel that I now have a pretty good understanding of Markdown and will be able to use it and grow.

This is a simple, yet useful course. I had already begun investigating Markdown for use in R-Studio and notetaking (e.g., Writer, Workflowy). I picked up a couple of useful new tools here, including the how-to's of StatckEdit. The course was easy to complete in just a couple of evenings after work and was well worth the low cost. The instructor speaks in a steady, clear voice, which is probably going to be useful to non-native English speakers.

The instructor is clear, direct and follows a nice train of thought. These are constant characteristics of the instructor through all courses that I've had with him. However I felt that this course lacks content. It's hard to differentiate it from any other free online tutorial. Maybe if could be improved by adding common uses and good practices on specific contexts like github (or something along this line). But never the less it is a good course and I would recommend it to everyone that wants a nice and clean introduction to Markdown.

I have used Markdown on a couple of wikis, but I've never had formal training. This course is excellent, with thorough coverage of Markdown and the online StackEdit tool. The course also introduces the Editorial phone app, which enables you to write on a tablet or phone. Jason is a great instructor - thorough and responsive. I highly recommend this course.

By Dante Dibenedetto on 2/16/2016

As a coder that's something in the vein of fullstack, I'm always learning snippets of this language and that, so when I actually want to _learn_ it instead of checking references, it's good to know there's something out there for us ADHD-addled plebs like myself when it's a simple as Markdown. As I was starting to maintain some documentation on GitHub, I figured two things: 1. This course is $9 _retail_ so what's the harm? Pretty much $9 and time! 2. I've taken a course from Jason before, and he's a great instructor. End of list. Did I learn things about Markdown that I didn't know about before? Yes. Was it worth the $9 and time I spent learning it? Yes. Would I have purchased this course if I thought I was already quite well-acquainted with markdown? No. Would I recommend this course to someone who isn't already well-versed in markdown? Yes, but only if it's something they're interested in, or that they feel, like myself, that professionally speaking it would be good to know what the heck you're doing. My only recommendation if you're taking this course is to consider creating a DropBox account for it. He does some examples that utilize syncing with a Markdown editor called StackEdit, which runs in your browser. I didn't bother, but that doesn't lessen the course overall. If anything, it's a handy addition to your markdown education arsenal.
