Build 25+ Augmented Reality Apps - Updated for ARKit 2.0
Created by: Mohammad Azam

Our take
Based on the ratings of 970 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in October 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a long, project-heavy ARKit course for people who already write Swift. The syllabus shows 30 sections and 156 lectures over about 16 hours, and many sections build a small app: a measuring tool, a remote control car, a portal, an AR watch. It also touches CoreML, Core Location, MapBox and 3D object scanning. About 7,060 students have enrolled. It needs a physical iPhone, and the requirements say you should know Swift first, so it is not the place to learn iOS from scratch.
Reviewers like the breadth and the structure. One says most ARKit tutorials cover a single piece, while this one shows how planes, physics and collisions fit together. Mohammad Azam gets credit for a clear, steady pace. The complaints are consistent too. Some code is typed in without explaining why it works, and a 3-star reviewer found later sections recycle earlier material, including the same tap gesture setup and the same speech about needing a real device. An older 2-star review flags that it stays on ARKit 2.0 with no Swift 5 support.
The last update was October 2022, so the tooling is old. For ARKit 2.0 fundamentals, though, 542 of 970 ratings are five stars, and one reviewer calls it far better than another SceneKit course they had taken. Another reviewer notes a scarcity of structured ARKit courses, with Angela Yu's course offering only two sections on it. It is worth it if you want to see lots of AR ideas built out. Expect to look elsewhere for newer features and RealityKit.
Pros
- Many sections build a small app, such as a measuring tool, a portal or an AR watch
- Covers a wide spread: plane detection, physics, CoreML, Core Location, image and 3D object detection
- Reviewers praise a clear, steady pace and show-it-several-ways coding
- Ties separate ARKit pieces together, which reviewers say single-topic tutorials do not
Cons
- Stops at ARKit 2.0 and was last updated in October 2022, so newer features are missing
- Some code is pasted in without explaining why it works, per two reviewers
- Later sections repeat earlier material, including the same device intro and tap gestures
He is clear, concise, and shows many approaches to solve issues. Very good pace and really good coding.
Suits iOS developers who know Swift basics but are new to AR. Needs a physical iPhone 6S or better.
What you will learn
- Build amazing ARKit applications
- Learn how to use SceneKit with ARKit enabled apps

Excellent course. As a person interested in learning how to use ARKit, finding this course has been extremely beneficial; there appears to be a scarcity of structured courses on this subject (Angela Yu has two sections in ARKit, but she is more focused on iOS in general). It is comprehensive and I am getting great value from it. I have also purchased his course in RealityKit as I think this might be the future (I am not sure if anyone else has a course in RealityKit yet). I am enjoying this course and expect learnings from this to carry over to RealityKit.

A lot of ARKit tutorials out there are focussed on one of the components like "Detecting planes" or "Collision detection" or "physics".. which is well and good. But they left me a bit confused about how it all comes together. This course is very well structured; it puts all the concepts together to start building good ARKit apps and make learning much easier. There are lots of examples which is a good showcase of how powerful ARKit is. The course is also up to date with examples using the latest ARKit developments.

I thought the course was very good and it teaches you the techniques for using ARKit and other platforms to assist in developing Augmented Reality applications. By the end of the course you will feel very confident about using Xcode for development and you will have a good understanding of most of the tools available to us at this point. I think this is the best course for learning ARKit on the web. The area that could use some improvement is in how some of the transitions go from lesson to lesson. This is a beginner course for ARKit but not for learning Swift or iOS development. There are times in each module where the instructor will add files to the projects you're building without showing the work in the videos. This is disorienting and if you like to build apps from scratch, you'll find yourself having to do a bit of work in between videos just to catch up... It's very inconvenient and most online programs do not teach this way. None the less, this is not a beginner iOS course. So you'll have to be fluent in Swift in order to keep up with everything he teaches. He doesn't always respond to all questions either, which is strange if there is an incentive to be more helpful. You may have to google your own solutions if he has not responded within two days. If you can work through the course, you will learn a lot. It's a good course and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn AR dev.

More precise explanation is needed like how simd function is working and other stuff...

This course has stopped updating for about 2 years and it is still on the market. The ARKit has got way more features and even new tools for development. However the course stayed at ARKit 2.0 version. NO Swift 5 support either. For those who doesn't care about the outdated contents which I don't get it who still uses 2.0, the course's contents can all be found on youtube as well. Portal, AR racing car, mapping ground and wall, picture and 3D object tracking. you can find all those for free.

My background is not programming, it is in an unrelated discipline. Even with that I found this course easy to understand and follow. The instructor explains ideas well and moves at a good pace. The content was very interesting and has helped me with my interest in ARKit as a hobby and amateur app developer. I would like to make a game or an educational app using iOS. It would be nice to see the course content expanded to include the new arkit features in ios 12. I would be interested in other courses from this instructor, however, with the issues being experienced with the Udemy app and the ability to view course content offline and on the go on a mobile device I am reluctant to enroll through Udemy because they don't seem to be interested in addressing the problem or providing a fix.. this is a frustrating issue after having enrolled in 97 courses at Udemy to date. Check the ratings on the ios appstore for the Udemy app.

I enjoyed the comprehensive nature of the course with lots of projects and cool ideas to implement that would excite customers and generate practical apps for the iPad and iPhone. Theres a tonne of information here presented step-by-step and lots of re-usable code to work with to get one up and running in no time. Worth every cent and more. Thanks!

Very nice course that allows a developer to quickly come up to speed on key AR concepts. I was able to take this course as a starting point and very quickly adapt the techniques to the real-world problems I need to resolve. Would love to see additional sections dealing with Model I/O best practices for those of us who can't ship models with the app, but instead need to download them from the internet and dynamically load the models at runtime.

There is a lot of good in-depth instruction on how to do things. And lots of source code. Talking is one thing, but I love source code so that I can explore further on my own. I thought the instructor was solid, did a good job, and obviously cares a lot and wants this to be a great course. Update: The instructor continues to add cool new features. Obviously committed to making this a really good course.

Great tutorial course. It is very comprehensive. This course covers a lot of interesting topics related to ARKit. Each lectures are appropriate length and easy to understand. The instructor added two new lectures recently. One is integrating CoreML with ARKit and the other is integrating CoreLocation with ARKit. Both lectures are very good. The instructor responded to my questions very quickly. He is very responsible.
