Our take
Based on the ratings of 3,096 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is Colt Steele's tour of the OpenAI API, built around eight small projects: a color palette generator, a Spotify playlist tool, a code reviewer, a sentiment analyzer, and more. Reviewers say it moves fast and covers GPT-4, DALL-E, embeddings, and Whisper in under 14 hours. Requirements are light, just beginner Python, though the All Levels label really means comfortable with code already, not brand new to programming.
Students consistently praise Colt's teaching style: straight to the point, not overly serious, and good at explaining why a prompt or parameter works. The recurring complaint is staleness. OpenAI has renamed libraries and deprecated models since the 2023 recording, so several reviewers had to hunt online to get sample code running even after the March 2024 refresh. A few also note the later projects shift from coding along to watching Colt explain finished code, which feels less hands-on.
There are no quizzes or coding exercises built into the course, so extra practice is whatever a student chooses to build on their own. At 3,096 reviews and a 4.7 average, it holds up as a solid first practical pass at the OpenAI API. Budget time to troubleshoot version drift, and it works well for developers who want to build things immediately rather than read documentation first.
Pros
- Eight build-along projects covering GPT-4, DALL-E, Whisper, and embeddings
- Colt Steele's teaching is direct and reviewers call it genuinely entertaining
- Only light beginner Python needed to start
- 3,096 reviews averaging 4.7, a large and consistent sample
Cons
- Some sample code breaks due to OpenAI API and library changes since 2023
- Later projects are demoed rather than coded along with you
- No quizzes or coding exercises built into the course
Colt is a great teacher who doesnt take himself too seriously. If you want to learn fundamental concepts on Gen AI, this course is for you.
Listed as All Levels, but it really suits developers who already write basic Python, not total beginners

Hi! I'm Colt. I'm a developer with a serious love for teaching. I've spent the last few years teaching people to program at 2 different immersive bootcamps where I've helped hundreds of people become web developers and change their lives. My graduates work at companies like Google, Salesforce, and Square.
Most recently, I led Galvanize's SF's 6 month immersive program as Lead Instructor and Curriculum Director. After graduating from my class, 94% of my students went on to receive full-time developer roles. I also worked at Udacity as a Senior Course Developer on the web development team where I got to reach thousands of students daily.
I’ve since focused my time on bringing my classroom teaching experience to an online environment. In 2016 I launched my Web Developer Bootcamp course, which has since gone on to become one of the best selling and top rated courses on Udemy. I was also voted Udemy’s Best New Instructor of 2016.
I've spent years figuring out the "formula" to teaching technical skills in a classroom environment, and I'm really excited to finally share my expertise with you. I can confidently say that my online courses are without a doubt the most comprehensive ones on the market.
Join me on this crazy adventure!

Overall, I found the course thorough and engaging. Colt's obvious Pythonic chops should also be commended. I can say that I started with zero knowledge of openai APIs and now have a good understanding of text, image and audio workflows. Note: I'm taking this course as part of my firm's education path for AI engineering. I started in late September 2025 and completed today, November 5th 2025. I took my time with nearly all the labs, often expanding on (and fixing others for my environment which does have its challenges with corporate firewalls). Regarding the sample code, staying on the positive side, they were extremely helpful in getting me hands on with ai workflows in Python. I am an advance C#/C++ developer and intermediate in Python. Given the rapidly changing AI landscape at the time this course was created it is understandable that there would be some impedance mismatches at times. I never worked with the original codebase, but only the updated one. I learned a ton. The sections on embedding I found to be the most useful given the interest in RAG. That was something I worked through in detail with the labs. On the 'things to improve' side of the ledger, while I love the wonky stuff, and went there with you on aspects (memoize, retry) etc... I'm not sure that tgese demonstrations of Python mastery contributes ultimately to the end goal of focusing on the specifics of the API. Just a note, while the videos may be 13 hours or so - my lab work took probably 25-30 hours to do justice to the course. Yes, you said it was optional but really how can you learn without getting into the code! Overall you were very engaging, skillful and I am much further along than I was before taking the course. Note: My previous experience with AI were basic prompting courses and a Coursera course in AWS Sagemaker call Generative AI with AWS etc..

This was a very efficient training. The instructor was straight to the point. He explained all things about OpenAI and also gave really good examples for good coding practice. I liked that the use of the APIs was repeated several times in the small projects. The only thing to make this course better would have been exercises.

This course is for AI practitioners, not researchers, and I learned practical ways to interact with OpenAI and related AI models to create unique software experiences. The subjects included: Prompt engineering - how to provide LLM models prompts which promote the most accurate, useful, and well formatted responses, especially responses which can be parsed by programs I write. Web services to create a color palette and a Spotify playlist - these utilized LLMs to create web experiences which can intelligently give a color palette for abstract concepts such as a Mediterranean summer color palette, or playlists for ideas such as “walking on the moon” respectively. Building a Chatbot - Developing on API parameters, estimating costs and the chat API, I learned to build my own ChatGPT with the backend GPT4 and GPT3.5 turbo, including cost estimation. Automatic Code Reviewer - I learned to make an interactive automated code reviewer to promote code quality, reusability, and developer efficiency. Embeddings and GPT enhancement using embeddings - I learned how to summarize and reference material on which GPT was not programmed to enhance prompts so that the GPT appears to be an expert on subjects such as internal corporate documentation on which it was not previously trained. Similar techniques were used to make a book summarizer. Sentiment Analysis - I learned methods to generate and summarize sentiment analysis using GPTs which is helpful for organizations which wish to better understand social media content about their products and services. DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and a Choose Your Own Adventure App - I learned to use image generation models with GPT to create an impressive application in which GPTs dynamically generate images and text for a unique and potentially endless choose your own adventure application. Whisper - I learned to create English text from audio in any language

This course is perfect to get familiar with a number of AI APIs. Even though some of the APIs have been changed since the creation of the course, the Changelog and some common sense is enough to figure out the differences. Colt is a great instructor, I really enjoyed the course!!

This course really brought a lot of the concepts into prospect and with the projects it made important moving parts of the process very clear for me. I did few courses before this one but I would say that this course should have been done before them because it it kind of traced the evolution of things. I also enjoyed the delivery.

Course content is great for understanding the building blocks of how to interact with OpenAI models, but because some of the content is outdated due to deprecation of older models, it took much more time to get the sample code to work. Having the updated sample code helps but since the format switching between Jupyter notebook file and regular python file still make it a bit challenging for anyone who's not a python dev. A fully refreshed course, new video can be super helpful.

Good introduction course to openai. The course went through various models and apis, with good examples. The mini projects provided by this course are interesting, demonstrating samples of applying openai apis to different apps.

Thanks Colt, and Kevin, for the course. It was a good pathway in to understand what is happening behind the scenes with these AI services, and how to consider designing products to use AI. One addendum to the course would be how to deploy the exercises to a publicly available server, so as to be able to demonstrate the projects to others.

Colt Steele demonstrates here how he earned his reputation for being one of the most sought-after coding instructors on Udemy. I just completed his course here, "OpenAI Python APIs: Unleash ChatGPT and GPT4", which is my first course with him and it won't be my last. I'm something of a Python novice and appreciate especially how he was able to speak to all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. If you're interested in learning how to use Python to get the most out of OpenAI's numerous applications -not just ChatGPT- then this course is for you. I didn't have any interaction with the Q&A, but I did see that the teaching assistant, Kevin, was very helpful and responsive to queries. The only small thing I felt was missing from the course was a proper conclusion, because of which, left me wanting more. I think a cool project to extend the current final segment on Whisper would be to create code to auto-generate subtitles for video files. Keep up the GREAT work, Mr. Steele!
