Course Description

MuseScore is a music notation program that is powerful, open source, completely free, and runs on Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems.

In this course I'll show you all of the ins-and-outs of using MuseScore for your own projects. I'll show you some of my own workflow techniques, as well as how other people do things. This is a fantastic program for learning to write music in any style, or just to help you learn the basics of music notation.

I've been working with MuseScore for a number of years now. I've worked with major American orchestras, film studios, and video game designers, so I've got more than a little experience in professional music notation. I'm also a PhD in music composition and a university professor (of music composition).

Recently I was named as a semi-finalist for the Grammy Foundation's Music Educator of the Year award because of my in-person university classes. Now I'm taking those classes to Udemy in an online format in order to reach more students, and give them the joy of Music Theory.

In this course we will cover:

  • The history of MuseScore

  • How to get involved in the MuseScore Community

  • Installation and Setup

  • Using Musescore 3

  • Music notation in musescore

  • Finding free music on the musescore website

  • The Start Center

  • Creating a new score

  • Assigning playback instruments

  • The MuseScore interface

  • Toolbars

  • Pallets

  • Inspector

  • 3 methods of note input

  • Using a MIDI keyboard with MuseScore

  • Adding lyrics

  • Adding text

  • Guitar tablature

  • Drum set notation

  • Repeats and Endings

  • Dynamics

  • Articulations

  • Playing your score back

  • Making parts

  • Any much, much, more!

And of course, once you sign up for this class, all my other classes are yours at steep discounts! Over half off for all future sections!

You will not have another opportunity to learn MuseScore in a more comprehensive way than this. Start here.

Praise for classes by Dr. Jason Allen:

  • "Without a doubt the best explanation and east of use that one can get. It leaves you enough room to go explore. The classes go by quick, so you can be on your way at being proficient. What are you wait for!"

  • "Amazing - Seriously Loved It! I took all his courses and have to say I'm so happy! Learnt loads! Jason is an awesome teacher!"

  • "I have never had any formal training in music at all. Trying to learn all the notes and how everything translated was a serious challenge. After going through this class, Dr. J has totally brought down the barriers. The content was very useful and was easy to grasp for me."

  • "I like these courses because you can get up and running quickly without having to spend hours of time wading through TMI (too much information!). Jason hits the high points but shows you what you need to know. Thanks!"

  • "I've watched many other videos on scales and chords before, however, this one has been the best. I now  understand minor scales and chords and even how to analyze songs. It really gave me the confidence to start producing music because I feel like I have some structure and guidelines to follow. AWESOME!"

  • "Clear and Informative - Jason has a clear uncluttered style (with the important dashes of humor) of presentation that is focused on the important key aspects of this course. Recommended for those starting out!"

  • "Dr. Allen does it again with his music theory series. This course really opened up everything I learned from the 1st section, and now I understand more about the composition side of things for music. I highly highly recommend this course to anyone!!! Really opened my eyes to many things I wasn't aware of."

  • "The Best Teacher Ever, who makes you understand the ins & outs of Music Theory by all means without giving what you don't want to know."

This was a great introduction to MuseScore fundamentals. When I first tried to use MuseScore (on my own), I was quite frustrated -- which is what drove me to look for some type of formal training on this software. This course methodically broke down all the steps and and yet didn't overwhelm me with too much info. I'm looking forward to getting started on my music project as well as learning some aspects of MuseScore more deeply.

Jason is a great instructor - as both a programmer and musician myself, Musescore is a program I wanted to master and he taught it well enough for me to get a solid understanding and now be able to progress on my own. He's enjoyable to be with, and that's important for a Udemy instructor. His knowledge of music really helps here because it is after all, a music notation program. Highest marks - would have liked it a little longer, but well worth my time and money and I will be looking into his other courses.

Jason Allen's presentation on MuseScore allowed me to get going with this software in a very short time. I completed the course after 3 or 4 shorter sessions and feel reasonably comfortable that I will be able to transcribe my parts to songs I am learning on bass guitar and not waste time trying to figure basics out on my own. Jason's course is on version 2 of MuseScore; the current version these days is version 3. I did not experience any difficulty with the version differences, if anyone is hesitant about that. All in all, a very good course on basic MuseScore with an engaging instructor. I'll be taking more of his courses very soon, starting with Music Theory.

This course helped me to go from a primitive user of MuseScore to a reasonably competent user. All in one day really, not sure how long it took but maybe four or so hours. However, I take a lot of notes and experimented with Musescore as Jason described things. Anyway, I learned an awful lot that I can put into practice right away. I use MuseScore for fairly simple songwriting so there is a lot in MuseScore that I wouldn't use. However, Jason covers not everything, that would take days and days, but all of the essential procedures you will need. Also, the program is fairly user-friendly. Once you learn one thing all related things are done the same way.

Good pacing. The frequent blurring of the MuseScore image is distracting. I had my own MuseScore program open on one monitor and the Udemy course open on another monitor. Would be nice to have some exercises sprinkled in that I can (optionally) do on my own to reinforce something about the operation of MuseScore. Immediate practice reinforces memory! Was able to get through the entire course in one day and tomorrow I'll practice making a score! Might add a short segment on how to get help in MuseScore. Thanks for a great course.

Didn't back-check earlier...but in lesson 20, when demonstrating entering notation for a C scale, do you realize that everything was a half step higher than Concert pitch? Bad boy!!!, minus one star!... :-())) (Kidding...about the star, anyway!) But seriously, so far, VERY good course! SOME (just a few) of the explanations were unclear...e.g., when changing something back to what it was previously, or preventing something from completing the anticipated change, the reversion process was obscure... Also, the auto-focus on the video recording device seemed to be adjusting quite a bit... I don't recall if that happened on the first 1/3 or so of lessons (which i started several months back); but I did notice it in the 20 or so lessons I've recently watched...and it eventually got to be not only quite distracting, but tough to read at times, as well - at least, on a laptop.

Wanted to learn MuseScore to be able to write down the songs I'm learning in my music lessons and songs that I figure out or author on my own. This class enabled me to use the program right away (I'm working on a couple of scores right now) something I wouldn't have been able to do as quickly by just reading the manual and fiddling with the program on my own. Jason's instruction is clear and easy to understand and he gets you going with the fundamentals of the program without any fluff.

I took a bunch of music theory classes by Jason and MuseScore was definitely not new to me - nevertheless I got new and useful information for working effectively. For all those new (sort of) to Music Notation software this course is highly recommended - it focuses on things step by step, easy to understand and - btw - with fun. But even those that know MuseScore already might find interesting new stuff - just give it a try ;-)

I have use Finale Notepad in the past, but MuseScore is by far an easier program to use, as well as more powerful in my opinion. This class was GREAT initial introduction to this powerful tool. I certainly beat the pants of of the "Columbus" system of trial and error - (find a key and land on it). All in all, I found the class to be an excellent investment for the newbie to MuseScore, and am grateful for having taken said class. Thank You, Jason Allen - it was an excellent experience!

I put that more detail would improve the course but it could just be that there isn't that much to know about Musescore (I'm not really sure about that but I wanted to be fair). I've learned much more from Jason Allen in other classes but maybe I've already learned enough about Musescore to feel pretty comfortable with it.
