Course Description

** UDEMY BESTSELLER **

Welcome to the COMPLETE Music COMPOSITION AND FILM SCORING Guide!

This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take their music career (or music interest) and develop it into something more. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.

When most people think of a composer, they imagine someone sitting in a dusty attic with a grand piano, a big white wig, and the year is 1800. That might have been accurate back then, but the modern composer is just like you and me. In fact, I am one.

In this course, I'll show you the techniques I use for writing music in a variety of styles and situations. I've worked with major American orchestras, film studios, and video game designers, so I've got more than a little experience. I'm also a Ph.D. in music composition and a university professor (of music composition).

Recently I was named as a semi-finalist for the Grammy Foundation's Music Educator of the Year award because of my in-person university classes. Now I'm taking those classes to Udemy in an online format in order to reach more students and give them the joy of Music Theory.

I'm planning on making several "sections" of this class, and this is only part 1. As the class grows, we will go deeper and deeper into my techniques. This class is focused on the beginning: Generating ideas and getting started.

In this class, we will cover:

  • My background, and listen to some of my music

  • The difference between music theory and music composition (highly opinionated!)

  • Tools of the trade: Software

  • Tools of the trade: Pencils and fine paper

  • How do you start?

  • The process

  • Program music and metaphors

  • Character sketches

  • Writing through canon

  • Form

  • Binary, Ternary, and Rondo forms

  • Starting with a plan

  • Graphic form representations

  • Triads, and basic rules of harmony

  • Chord progressions

  • Inversions

  • Song analysis

  • Melody writing

  • Principals of orchestration

  • Principals of film scoring

  • Writing music for games, video games, and sound design for games.

  • And much, much, more!

And of course, once you sign up for this class, all my other classes are yours at steep discounts! Over half off for all future sections!

The course is a roadmap to launching your career as a composer!

The instructor appears unprepared for his lessons at times.

I like the way the instructor teaches by example. Still, "Music Theory Made Simple," by David Harp (an easy-to-read booklet sold on Amazon.com) combined with this course will complete it. The teacher's examples of visual contour maps, and improvised melody, and Harp's examples of keys, chords, and chord progressions (the way they work) are very useful for the beginner.

Great course. I learned lots and it complimented the beginner music theory course I'm currently working through by the same instructor. The style is more conversational, slightly meandering in places. Which I personally prefer but may not be a good fit for everyone. Overall I feel really excited to get to work with the fundamental tools I've acquired in this course as well as hungry to learn more.

By Robert Parker on 1/13/2019

This is a good starting class for anyone looking to write music. This is not a music theory class but rather provides the student with a framework to organize their thoughts in order to write music. There is however, some fundamental music theory included in the class.

By Carolin Fährmann on 8/15/2017

Really good explanations, step-by-step exercises, easy to follow. Although I already knew most of the theoretical stuff, it was quite cool to hear about it in another teachers' words, which cleared some misconceptions. Best of all was all the cool advice about the "getting started"-techniques, these will prove veeeery valuable to me. Erm, the subtitles were sometimes weird. I guess it's a program doing this, which sometimes gets it all wrong and makes it quite funny to read (saying like "court" instead of "chord"), but that didn't distract me much. Could have switched it off anyways. Cool class, please continue!

Some real nuggets of good ideas and information - but best suited for beginning musical student

By Wiel Rutten on 5/31/2017

Because the intro came in with text, and I was not even paying attention. Then, there were a series of crops from various lessons, which made me confuse. I only got what was going on because I remembered this being a demo video from the main website. I don't really think the course should begin with such a video. But I'm still excited with what I'm about to find here. I'm updating the score from 2.5 to 5. The first video really left no very good impression; overall course is just great, though! I've enjoyed taking this course!

By Pia Johnson on 1/5/2017

This was a super helpful class given my level (self-taught; the equivalent of a 1st year college music major). This class provides a user-friendly, accessible way to begin composing. There are no assignments or exercises; you have to be disciplined enough to try out what you learn as you go. The instructor's explanations are very clear and new material does not seem difficult or too abstract. Thank you! I'm looking forward to the next installment.

This has been great , Jay has a great presentation manner, I've gone through several of his courses and constantly improve my skills as a result of his teaching ability/delivery and insight. Jay provides great insight into working with chord progressions and melody lines and building upon them .. I got a lot out of this course!!! Thanks Jay
