Course Description

Updated 2024!

Pass your Grade 1 ABRSM Music Theory Exam with Confidence!

This grade 1 music theory course covers the topics set out on the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) syllabus. This is an entry level exam/course and is ideal if you:

  • have recently begun learning to read printed music

  • are keen to discover more about how music "works"

Knowing music theory is the key to understanding written music so that you can perform it well, and also helps you to composer your own music and gain a deeper appreciation of the music you love to listen to.

The ABRSM has a set of eight graded exams which allow you to learn in a guided, logical way, and you can gain internationally recognised qualifications along the way! Grade 1 is a beginner's level course - the highest level is grade 8, which is roughly equivalent to first year undergraduate level at university.

There are no age/geographical restrictions to taking the ABRSM music theory exams.

What You Will Learn

Please scroll down for the full curriculum! In a nutshell, this level introduces you to the concepts of reading notes in the treble and bass clefs, the different values of notes and rests, major scales and key signatures (in four easy keys), basic chords, counting intervals, and how to construct and write down musical rhythms. You'll also learn some of the most common symbols and terms used in music.

The course uses both UK and USA terminology for notes (crotchets AND quarter notes!)

What's Included in this Course

  • Free copy of the MyMusicTheory Coursebook PDF. This is a comprehensive coursebook which goes into depth for each topic of the course, providing further examples and explanations.

  • The PDF includes hundreds of exercises for you to practice your skills (answers provided)

  • The PDF also includes a complete mock test in the style of the real exam

"This course was absolutely first rate in every way. Ms. Williams presented the material clearly, thoughtfully, and with an obvious love of teaching. The only way this could possibly have been any better is to have had the privilege of studying with her in person. I'm amazed by how much information I learned -- and in such an enjoyable way! Ms. Williams is someone who not only has a deep understanding of music theory, but a rare and wonderful creativity that makes her such an effective teacher of it. Bravo and thank you!"

Victoria graduated from the University of Leeds in 1995 with a BA Honours in Music, specialising in Musicology. She also holds the AmusTCL  and LmusTCL diplomas in Music Theory, from Trinity College London.

Since 2007, Victoria has been teaching music theory online and by email via her acclaimed website MyMusicTheory, offering free music theory tuition following the structured syllabus of the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

I like the course so far . I am an 8year old student. I am preparing for 6th grade ABRSM piano exam ,but I have never formally learned about music theory before until my mom bought this course

Thanks for providing these reading materials in line with ABRSM. I was a 90s ABRSM student. Finally I found these as a refresher course. I hope i can finish the full ABRSM examination once I get my playing techniques in sync.

The videos are an OK introduction to the topics but totally insufficient in explaining necessary details. On the other hand, the accompanying PDF (101 pages incl. sample test) is fantastic and helped us in prep tremendously.

Very clear, thorough presentation. Workbook was very useful to help clarify the lectures. Looking forward to taking the next course with this instructor.

Material presented in good fashion and covers all I would expect. Course is consice and only covers the needed material - other courses might cover material accross more of the grades for the same price (especially with the promotional sales) but this makes it clear the material needed at this grade so down to user preference really.

By Alina SKNAR on 1/31/2019

Very clear and step-by step explanations, perhaps more practice should have been included but otherwise, I am glad I've purchased this course.

By Rona Dixon on 1/15/2019

The instructor has a clear voice giving precise instructions. The exercises are extremely useful and enable the trainee to practise what they have learned. This course has begun to demystify the secret and strange language of music.
