This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take their music career (or music interest) and level up. Whether you are an active musician, an aspiring musician, or an aspiring music manager or agent - this class is perfect for you.
For years I've been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I'm making for Udemy use the same syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory - and cost shouldn't be a barrier.
My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understanding why chords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you've tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out - this series of courses is the perfect fit.
Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a "Mover and a Shaker," and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.
Throughout this class, If you get stuck, you can review the videos or post a question, and I'll back to it as fast as possible.

Jason is amazing. He teaches everything very thorough. His methods are "Down to Earth." I especially like that he gets to the point and doesn't spend a ton of time doing repeated exercises and talking nonsense to fill space on the video. I am going to take a lot of classes from him.

By Lorena Toriz Férez on 6/10/2022
Excellent course. Very to the point and clear, even if the concepts are complex, the teacher makes them understandable.
By Charlotte M on 4/16/2021
I enjoy all of these music comprehensive courses! I wanted to take music theory courses like these in University but I wasn't a music major and therefore couldn't enroll in them. This is showing me a whole new side of music that I would have never imagined in my years of playing!
By Graham Kelly on 3/25/2021
For me, Jason’s courses have been more than learning about music theory, they have helped me understand why music has been so profoundly important to me throughout my life. I used to think that great music was voodoo created by geniuses with magic in their souls - and I still do - but now, thanks to Professor Allen, I have been introduced to their evolving book of spells. More gratifying is a new appreciation of music that I once found impenetrable and elitist, an appreciation that has encouraged patience and understanding in me. Jason is both knowledgeable and humble, detail-oriented but not at the expense of losing his student. I have found his courses to be enjoyable and deeply, deeply rewarding.

it would help if some of the info given was offered in note form that can be downloaded and not only in video format
By Snorre Emil Baadstø on 2/25/2021
I have followed Jason Allen's Music Theory Courses from the beginning and they are really great. The instructor is not only dedicated, but also very knowledgeable about the topic. The classes are a thorough introduction into music theory, and I strongly recommend them for those of you out there that are interested in this subject.
By Nikolaos Arvanitopoulos on 10/31/2020
Very good course, easy to understand and covers all the necessary concepts. What I would like maybe towards the end (Integer notation, etc) is to have more real examples that follow the said concepts from 20th century composers.
By Martin Lundquist on 6/10/2020
WOnderful expansive, challenging, like walking through a door into another wonderful world of music creation t I didn't know of it's existance. thank you, Martin L. Lundquist. At 87 years old now music has always been the second love of my live after science. Have always followed the idea that "Knowledge is the ability to take things apart, while wisdom is the ability to put them together."
