Course Description

✨Welcome to the Musical Warp Drive✨

Part 1: Fundamentals, Mind & Ear
This course will lead you through the abyss of music theory into a new world of understanding, creativity, and confidence.

I think you'll like what you find...

------------------------

How it Works:

  • Part 1 was designed to help reveal and strengthen your innate musical abilities.

  • The goal is freedom and fluency in the process of writing music, allowing you to express your authentic sound without contrivance.

  • The method is a series of lessons and exercises which target the most crucial areas of musical development and nothing else.

  • There will be no sight-reading, no exams, no quick-fixes, and no diploma to hang on your wall. There will be deep listening, compositional challenges, personal reflection, and many hours of effective practice.

Is this a music theory course?

  • Definitely! However, it is theory in service of composition.

What type of composition?

  • The type most natural to you, whatever that may be. Musical Warp Drive deals with universal music principles rather than genre-specific details. These insights and ideas apply as much to dubstep as they do to country.

------------------------

What to Expect:

This first part of the Warp Drive will ensure you have the proper foundation for further musical exploration.

It is separated into three main sections: Fundamentals, Mind, and Ear.

  1. Fundamentals:
Whatever your current level of knowledge is, the Gap-Filler series will bring clarity and solidity to your musical core. All terms accurately defined and logical reasoning made explicit. These concepts make everything else possible. Additionally, I recommend everyone gain a basic degree of keyboard ability as it is the best compositional tool we have right now. I have included a series of powerful keyboard practices at the end of this section for anyone not already experienced.

  2. Mind:
The seat of all music, our mind, is all but ignored in most theory books and courses. To study music deeply is to explore our very self. Our mindset (beliefs, ideas, and overall perspective) regarding music and our relationship to it plays a central role in our growth. In addition, the way we directly experience music, as both listener and creator, can massively shape our own compositions. If you're serious about expanding your creative potential, these deeper aspects will prove invaluable and the exercises given will unlock new insights unique to you.

  3. Ear:

The state of our musical ear, perhaps above all else, determines the accuracy, speed, and degree of ease we have in the real-time activity of writing music. Left untrained, many hours are spent trying to translate sounds in our mind into sounds in the air. If the information and exercises given in this section are put into practice, the opaque will become transparent and a real sense of musical fluency will begin to emerge.

What are students saying about the course?

“I would recommend Max's Musical Warp Drive experience to anyone who has an interest in music and wants to further their understanding, and any musician who is looking to put themselves in the proper mindset for practice. Perfect for beginners, even if you do not have prior knowledge. Max explains music and sound in such a way that makes it easy to understand and grasp the concept. He includes engaging activities that encourage you to practice mindfully with an intrinsic motivation.”

“This course covered so many aspects of music that are often overlooked or skimmed. It was everything I was looking for. It helped me take a leap forward on my music learning journey. Thank you!”

“This was a fantastic course, it taught me why certain notes or chords sound right together. It taught me about music, rather than just how to follow a recipe. There was much more and I really liked how it was taught. I already bought the second course”

“There is something for everyone in this course, it's a great place to start for beginners who want to learn about music and theory, and advanced musicians will benefit from Max's approach and thought process for writing melodies. Max has a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience but it's in his ability to present and break it down into simple and easy to understand explanations, from small details to bigger picture stuff, that makes him an exceptional educator. The course is structured thoughtfully, with clear and concise explanations, and exercises all along the way so you can apply these concepts immediately and begin to hone your skills as a composer. Highly recommend this course as well as anything else Max puts out.”

“This is a must have course for musicians of all levels. What makes this course so special for me is that it makes you realize that the doubts and struggles we all face as artist and musicians are common to us all. The great musicians we all admire are not gods but mortals who put in the work to get where they are. I have already started to see improvements in my playing, listening and composing after implementing the lessons from this course. Awesome teaching and lessons”

“Fantastic course! I have been looking for something like this for years - and Max delivers on his promise.”

“The best course on musical theory I have ever taken! Very profound and useful! I am looking forward to the second part now. Thank you Max.”

“If you love making music, take this course. It has been so valuable in so many different ways, and it is absolutely worth the price of admission. I don't ever leave reviews/comments on things but this course has made a huge impact on me and how I write/listen/and think about music. Max is an excellent teacher/musician and you will learn so much by taking his lessons”

Max Konyi

Musically, my path has been one of self-study, allowing for an open exploration of the topics that capture my curiosity. I play a variety of instruments and spend much of my time composing. I have also been working as a music teacher for over 17 years, for which I'm very grateful. The musicians that have influenced me most, and whom I consider my primary teachers, are W.A. Mathieu, Ted Greene, Pat Metheny, and J.S. Bach.

Ear training is a topic close to my heart and I've created an app called Sonofield Ear Trainer, which is available for free on your mobile device. You can find it in the app store or via sonofield dot com.

Beyond music, I have a passion for philosophy and metaphysics, nature, and video games.

To all of you pursuing your love of music (or whatever else it may be), I applaud and thank you. Share your gifts with the world and let your authentic expression shine! Together, we can infuse our society with beauty and love, respect, and compassion.

great, but I'd love if it had some real songs which would be practiced and those concepts which were taught were actually applied more. Though, no doubt the explanation was fantastic and the value given by the course was truly worth it for a beginner

I really love that Max brought in a whole section on mindset and prompting questions to work on that mindset and to dig down into what this truly means to us as creators. Mindset is so important with everything you do in life, and I was very pleased to see that there was such a heavy emphasis on this topic. He also asked questions that I hadn't thought of and brought up things in the worksheet I hadn't even considered. Answering those questions revealed more of why this is vitally important to me right now and gave me more concepts to work with. I'm very excited to continue with this course!

Once, I had a teacher who said, “Being an artist is not the same as being a musician.” Anyone can teach you music theory, techniques, or how to improve your dexterity—but finding someone who can teach you how to actually be a musician is rare. And after spending a few years in the music industry, I can say that’s absolutely true. Of course, understanding music theory is important, but without the right mindset, it’s hard to achieve anything meaningful. Everyone talks about wanting to learn theory, but very few people actually sit down and practice. Why? Because no one really teaches you what to practice, how to practice, or how to create a personal schedule or plan that suits your unique path as a musician. That’s why what Max shares in this course is so valuable. I still can’t believe someone actually took the time to write a course that truly captures what it means to be a musician. I absolutely loved it—not just because it teaches music, but because it helps guide you toward becoming the kind of musician you truly want to be. And yes, at the end of the course, there’s a downloadable PDF with a personalized plan full of activities that help you develop useful skills—like easy ways to practice intervals, scales, chords, and how to apply all that in fun and practical ways: learning songs, doing ear training, melodic transcription, and more. 100% worth it.

If you are confused about music and feel lost, you can leave behind all the unnecessary thoughts and worries that weigh you down and relax here, Max is definitely someone who is very conscious and knows what he is talking about, after dozens of hours with him (I know the course is 8 hours but it will take you much more than that to absorb if you are a beginner like me) I have changed my mind about many things in life, not just music. I started to try to do proper value to whatever I was doing, to take what I was doing seriously and to try to make sure that I was having fun while I was doing it. and it's not magic, it's a completely deterministic process. if you follow Max, you will definitely win. He knows what he is talking about because he must have seen it hundreds of times in himself and in his students. don't feel you HAVE to follow what he says strictly, but if you do, you can move forward confident that there is a great roadmap already laid out for you, and after a while you will find yourself in a much better position than where you started. thank you for everything. you are a great teacher, mentor and idol Max. hope to see you again in the next parts!

I am brand new to learning music. I just picked up the guitar 2 1/2 months ago and started studying theory a little over a month ago. I was struggling with it, until I found this course. Max lays everything out in the beginning as if you know nothing at all, and then he launches you into space. It’s no wonder he calls it The Warp Drive. My partner, who has been a musician for 25+ years told me a few days ago, that it was safe to say that I know more about music theory now than he does. If you are on the fence, jump over it right now. This class is worth far, far more than what he’s asking for it. I’m excited to take the next two, once I’ve taken the time to fully ingest what I’ve learned here. Which may be a while. And that’s okay. As he keeps saying, it’s not a race.

I am very picky with music theory learning. But this course nails the bar, which means that I truly feel that Konyi really have good pedagogical skills to teach effectively. If you want to learn to compose, you need to be able to reproduce, analyze many music you like. Then with these skills also the rest of possibilities are opening. In my opinion, when we start learning an instrument, already we have to learn music theory, to better understand the possibilities and speed up our learning. With this course and the upcoming courses in the series all these are addressed.

I think this is well rounded fundamental knowledge for musicians. It is suitable as well for beginners, and for more experienced musicians it could be precious reminder on so many important aspects of musicianship, that we tend to forget. For example, I really like this sentence that Max said somewhere close to the end of the course: "Have discipline- feeling of self-doubt or not are irrelevant"; or this one: "Success does not mean having good feelings all the time!" Max, thank you for underlying the importance of well being in the process of learning!

I've searched for years to find a course that fit everything I wanted when it came to learning music and musical theory. This course checked every single box. Max's pace of teaching, the way the sections built on top of one another, contextualizing the information and even touching on the psychology behind music were priceless. I started picking up on things I once thought out of reach and gained confidence with every video. I would recommend this course 100x over to anyone who's looking to get into music and not just gain practical knowledge, but learn how to put it into practice as well. I look forward to taking the other courses in Musical Warp Drive. Thank you, Max!
