Course Description

The .NET framework is getting better and better and more important in the web development world nowadays.

Almost every request I get for new web development projects is asking for knowledge in .NET, including Web API and Entity Framework.

So, knowing the fundamentals of back-end web development with .NET can be highly beneficial to your career. And that’s where this course comes in.

In a short period of time, you will learn how to set up a Web API, make restful calls to this Web API and also save data persistently with Entity Framework, Code-First Migration, a SQL Server database, and all three types of relationships in this database.

We will get right to the point, you will see every single step of writing the necessary code and by the end of this course, you will have what it takes to say ‘yes’ to all the .NET project requests from any recruiter.

The only tool you need in the beginning is Visual Studio Code which is available for free.

We will use Visual Studio Code for our implementations and make calls to the Web API with the help of Swagger UI - an interface that lets you consume the API out-of-the-box, thanks to the latest version of the .NET framework.

Later, we will also utilize SQL Server Express and the SQL Server Management Studio to manage our database. These are also available for free.

The back-end application we’re going to build is a small text-based role-playing game where different users can register (we’re going to use JSON web tokens for authentication) and create their own characters like a mage or a knight, add some skills and a weapon, and also let the characters fight against each other to see who is the best of them all.

What You Will Learn

  • Create your first Web API call in less than 10 minutes

  • Initialize a Git repository for your source control

  • Object-Relational-Mapping

  • Code-First Migration

  • SQL Server Express

  • How to use a DataContext and a proper ConnectionString

  • All previous HTTP requests with Entity Framework Core to save your data in a SQL Server database

  • Data Seeding: Insert data with a migration programmatically

Authentication

  • Token Authentication with JSON Web Tokens

  • Claims

  • Secure controllers with the Authorize attribute

  • Add roles to the users

Advanced Relationships with Entity Framework Core

  • One-to-one relationships

  • One-to-many relationships

  • Many-to-many relationships

  • Include entities with Entity Framework Core

  • Get the proper relations between entities

More Than Just CRUD

  • Start automatic fights

  • Filter and order RPG characters by their highscore

This course has been completely re-recorded with .NET 7.

The lectures with the older versions of the .NET (Core) Framework - .NET 6, 5 & .NET Core 3.1 - are still available for reference.

My name is Patrick and I will be your instructor for this course. I’m a web developer for over a decade now, I have worked for big corporations and small teams, as an employee and a contractor and I just love to see the way Microsoft is going with .NET and how important it gets day by day.

To this date, I was able to run ten courses on web development here on Udemy about ASP.NET, Blazor, single-page applications, Angular, and DevOps, with a total of over 75.000 unique students and more than 10.000 reviews.

If you have any questions, feel free to connect.

And if you still have any doubts, you have a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked.

So, I hope you’re ready for your new skills and your new projects! ;)

I’m looking forward to seeing you in the course!

Writing code is what drives me. Creating software out of nothing is a skill I truly am passionate about and I want to share this astonishing feeling of making stuff with you.

I started to learn several programming languages as a teenager and always wanted to create software ever since I first played a game on a Commodore 64. During my bachelor and master studies, I joined various companies, made desktop and web applications as well as video games professionally and was always anxious to improve my craft, which I have been doing for more than 15 years now.

For me, the most important part of writing and teaching code is to have fun. If certain ways work for you and the results are maintainable and you have fun with your results, you're doing it the right way. I don't care if you always use your keyboard or switch to the mouse from time to time, so-called best practices are not always best or practical, I want to teach you to develop software in a way it works in the industry, a way it works for you and in a way that makes you happy.

At first I was fairly satisfied with the course. However, it got very frustrating and confusing when it came to authentication, which is a quite complex topic. The lessons are well-structured but there's almost no explanation to anything. Patrick is jumping from tab to tab doing stuff giving only some vague explanations: no hints, no advices, no elaboration on anything. Don't get me wrong I am not expecting a university-level lecture but I expected at least a bit more than the actual contents. I am going to finish the course but i am just diappointed. At least I got some waypoints for further learning. Best regards!

Excellent course. The focus on best practice is really helpful if you actually want to get started developing real applications. My only complaint would be this is not a 22hr course. It's around 5-6hrs the rest of the time being previous versions of the course. This seems to happen a lot now on Udemy so I think it's need addressing there, i.e. have 2 values one for the complete course and another for past and most likely out of date content.

One of the best instructionial videos I've watched! He went through everything starting from the beginning and then building onto what he did...including showing errors that may come up during development and what they mean. If you are new to Web Api's or a little rusty and want to refresh your skills, I couldn't recommend this course enough!!

The authentication process was really hard to follow. Even with a "bear it with me", having extremely little explanation about the sheer amount of information to be processed is extremely disappointing. I felt like I had to page dr.google to learn more about JWT, "headers", tokens, ClaimsPrincpal -- adding a visual graph to properly illustrate how all of these mechanisms fit together would be a life saver, rather than *assume* that the student knows wtf is going on here. Also, worse of all -- this line of code: builder.Services.AddSwaggerGen(c => { c.AddSecurityDefinition("oauth2", new OpenApiSecurityScheme { .... The authentication process does not work, UNLESS you provide the name "oauth2". And the host just arbitrarily said: "ah yeah let's just give it the name oauth2..." as if it's completely arbitrary. No. The NAME is hardwired with functions, yet the student can only assume it's just some string, a name you give it. Worse of all, it's hard to find online WHY oauth2 is an important string, other than: "it's hardcoded as a reference for OpenApiScheme.OpenApiRefernece." Whatever that means. This course provides a nice intro into .NET Core, but so much of it is practical, just copy-paste code, rather than theoretical -- actually understanding wtf we're typing and why. Someone who only knows C#, but nothing about web, would find this course to be extremely confusing.

The instructor builds the application from the simplest approach possible, and then increases its complexity as he goes. That's the way a course should be taught - no magic command lines and unecessary complexity. I really found entertaining to learn by using the concept of a RPG game. Kudos to the instructor, and hope to see new courses from him in the future.

The course was good. I learned a lot about Web API. But I will rate course with 4 stars, because the course contains 2 parts: NET 5 and NET 3.1. You wrote same code in the second part. I only watched first part and skipped 3.1 part, because it was almost same with first part.

By Samuel Phung on 1/27/2021

Great learning reference. All of the incremental code changes for each videos work. The code has sufficient complexity to show key functionalities, yet simple to minimize unnecessary confusion. I like the way Patrick points out potential problems, which are expected in a real production project, walks through the codes that create the problems, explains why and provides options to address the issue. Most of all, I appreciate Patrick keeping up with the latest, and updated the course content without breaking the codes like in quite a few other authors.

Build WEP API step by step

By Matthew Bortell on 11/21/2020

I really appreciate how this course is targeted to just the backend and uses Postman to interact with the API. I feel like I am getting way more out of this course than I would with all of the context switching that is required from working full stack. Even though this is a short course, it is a good deep dive into Web API.
