Course Description

In the past decade cloud computing has been gaining popularity at a tremendous rate. Some cloud providers are experiencing a growth rate of 50% year over year – which is just astounding. And the reasons for this growth is obvious – cloud computing enables ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal effort.

As companies across the globe enjoy the benefits of public cloud infrastructure – they also want to leverage the same principles of cloud computing and bring those benefits to how they manage their own private data centers or build private clouds on top of public cloud infrastructure. These private cloud deployments provide secure and highly efficient way to install, configure and manage pooled computing resources which could be shared among various departments or groups within the organization. The provisioning and consumption of these pooled resources become much smoother and consumers can use these resources on self-service basis eliminating lengthy provisioning wait times etc.

OpenStack is a free and open-source software platform for building and managing our own IaaS cloud infrastructure. This cloud software platform comprises of various services and components which can configure and manage control hardware pools of computing power, storage, and networking resources throughout a data center. Users either manage it through a web-based dashboard, through command-line tools, or through a RESTful API.

In this course we will learn about OpenStack and its various components and services. We will get an in-depth look at how we can use OpenStack to deploy and manage our own private cloud infrastructure.

Knowledge and experience on cloud computing and OpenStack are highly sought after by startups and large enterprises alike. The demand for these skills have been steadily increasing over the last few years. We will also go through some evidence about just how valuable these skills are and how the demand for these skills is growing.

In this course we will:

  • Learn about cloud computing
  • Learn about OpenStack
  • Deploy our own OpenStack IaaS cluster
  • Learn about various sub-components of OpenStack
  • Launch virtual instances on OpenStack
  • Learn about sub-components and usage of various OpenStack services
  • Learn about how to architect high availability OpenStack clusters
  • Learn about managing and troubleshooting OpenStack
  • Learn about log management for OpenStack cluster

It would have been more better if the course consisted the following: Openstack Manual Installation Openstack Controller, Compute or Network Node Addition or deletion / Maintenance activity Openstack Paching and Regular Maintenance How to replace/restore corrupted nodes / services Migration of VM's or Storage disks ...etc which depicts realtime environment.

The course is a quick meal delivery on OpenStack. Although it doesn't offer any practical exercises or quiz, it swiftly takes listener through all services showcasing service in action. At the end of the course, I could grab some important concepts and terminology of OpenStack architecture. But, its too far from being entitled to be called myself OpenStack developer/installer/user.

I had some experiences with AWS, so I wanted to understand more about OpenStack. The course is designed pretty good, easy to understand, the instructor sometime compares the OpenStack services with AWS services which are actually the same services but called differently; this helps me to understand quickly, or if you have no exposure to AWS, you also have some ideas about AWS as well. The course covers most important concepts to understand about the cloud as well as OpenStack architecture. I also like the last part which is the overview, the instructor compares the lab/test architecture he uses in the entire course with the proposed architecture for production. This helps me to imagine what should I design my production architecture, not only the training environment. I'd recommend this course if you're looking to understand OpenStack.

An extensive coverage of a vast number of Open Stack components and services. This was backed by command line setups covering important important features in every component. I am glad I have been able to do the course. Could not see integration of various types of containers containers.

This course is a good high level overview. I'd recommend this to anyone who needs a basic understanding of how OpenStack operates. The 12 second intro and music to every video (especially the videos that are only 1-2 minutes in length) gets tedious though. I'd recommend to Tetra Tutorials to cut it down or using it sparingly. I found myself hitting mute every time a new video loaded.

This is a good more-than-absolute-basic course, but it really depends on your level of exposure to the tech space. It probably isn't very newbie friendly - it is too fast paced for that and some things aren't explained too well. I am an experienced Linux administrator with a fair bit of exposure to virtualization so I could keep up but less experienced folks may not find it easy. Considering that it is a more-than-basic course, I would recommend adding more detailed content on things like projects, userdata, tenant networks and security groups and maybe some optional content on troubleshooting, log analysis etc.

Well, all in one, this course is pretty awesome. In-depth, this course allows me to understand the base of OpenStack, which I feed very helpful to get in with real cloud world. Now, I am confident about OpenStack. Equally, I will suggest all the beginner cloud learners, to have this course to accelerate your knowledge into cloud world - Gracious...

Cool introduction or reminder experienced users, a well done video course. I've some years of experience on the Linux system administration and virtualization field, also with OpenStack. But I consider that's always useful review stuff that we've learned time ago. Specially when you can get big discounts on the course price. Congratulations Manuj.

Most of the content is very high level and collection of material already available in docs.openstack.org. The lectures did not provide any in-depth guide on the complex topics such as networking and storage architectures. Also, it would be helpful to add some real troubleshooting lessons, in which most typical issues with an openstack deployment is looked at.

By Konduri Naga Anjaneyulu on 9/16/2016

Good explanation of Cloud Computing and Openstack capabilities. Pros: 1. Good architecture overview 2. Most important services explained and their CLI usage 3. Structured course outline Probable improvements: 1. Complete course is based on all services deployed in single OpenStack node. It would be good to have the course include a chapter on deploying different services on different nodes and how they interact with each other with some trouble shooting 2. Deployment instructions on other Linux distributions is useful. 3. Including some details about host server to openstack and more details about neutron networking like ml2 plugins, DVRs will be useful to know. Thanks for creating this course! Best wishes!
