Jesse Boyer

Hello!
My name is Jesse.

I was born in Michigan, but I've been living in Central Florida the past 10 years.

I've been programming since I was 12. Beginning with QBasic in school, IRC Scripting at home, and HTML in Netscape Navigator on weekends. In those days I had to "View Source" to figure out how to do anything! I wrote my first website at this age using the GeoCities free websites. I then moved to AngelFire for a while. Remember those days?

When I hit 20, I spent several years freelancing with the skills I picked up from terribly long nights of studying. Freelancing was difficult for me because being a salesman wasn't in my blood, but I enjoyed the coding parts! I primarily used Linux, PHP, MySQL, and CSS. Then jQuery a bit later.

These days I live in the corporate world. I work with a small team of people and I enjoy it. I'm doing all sort of things from building solid back-ends, REST API's, HTML5/JS games, Python Django, and sometimes a bit of monkey work.

I enjoy explaining programming not because I like to talk, but because I find it rewarding to help people along their way. In fact, I found it so rewarding that I created a Youtube channel with hundreds of videos covering programming topics.

I feel like Udemy should list pre-requisites before taking a course. I have next to zero knowledge of JS, JQuery and Bootstrap. The course overview implies that I'll learn those things, but it was almost as though I was expected to have experience in them already. Also, please list the date these courses were published. Maybe you did somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Not until I got mid-way through the course did I realize this was from 2013. The instructor was great, however, and he did teach the course well. My main complaints pertain to Udemy, and how the course was presented to me when I purchased it. Thank you.

A good programmer that knows his stuff. Maybe his teaching not very for the beginner but most people out there that learning this probably understand how database, function, config file concept works. Its suitable for most people.

This is a really great course and the instructor is great, however, it does get very sloppy and disorganized for a few videos around sections 6 and into 7 with a missing video and some code added out of sequence. But with that being said it is totally manageable to get through this rough patch of videos thanks to user questions and comments in each video. My overall takeaway from this course was a great experience and I did learn a lot even though it is an older course. I particularly appreciated the detailed Javascript videos as js organization is something I struggle with from time to time and there is no doubt that this video will help me better organize my js code moving forward. Overall I would say this is an excellent introduction to Codeigniter and MVC for that matter as long you already have some working knowledge of procedural PHP. I found the best part about this course to be the way he took the time to organize the database model and api controller for reuse. This code along with the registration/login is definatly an asset that you will be able to reuse over and over again as a base starting point for many projects to help speed up your production moving forward. If it wasn't for the fact of the above-mentioned disorganized issue for a few video span and that it looks like the instructor has completely abandoned the course for a few years now, I would have rated this course 5 stars all day long! As stated this course is about 5 years old now so it was made you php 5.x version. I was able to completed the course using php7.2 and the Code Igniter 2.x "Legacy" Version with no major issues.

I followed the course step by step up to session 5. I definitely wouldn't consider myself a PHP/JS/MySQL rookie, so I liked the pace, I could play around with variations in my own code that mimicked the instructor's code – all good. However, while the learning curve was very much acceptable up to that point, it got so much steeper with session 6. Suddenly the instructors start shuffling around code fragments, creates template functions by copy & paste without actually explaining what he wants to use them for – and it seems as if there were some minor steps missing between session 5 and session 6. So I actually followed 6, but it was really a lot of "well, I'll just let him do that without fully understanding what he will use it for at a later point", which leads to lots and lots of code that is much less understandable than everything in sessions 1-5. I feel that I've gained enough knowledge for my personal purposes up to session 5, so I actually quit after watching, but not really following session 6. I can't rule out that I might get into it deeper at a later point in time. But for now, my recommendation would be to follow the course until session 5, and then start coding your own creations based on that. Find your own way in CodeIgniter, until wading out into the deeper end of the pool.

Jesse made learning Codeigniter enjoyable. I'm a very visual learner and he got right to it. I've tried other courses and books, but they spent most of the time describing theory and using crazy analogies. Jesse's approach to teaching by building complete real life working a app made it learning fun. My only wish was it was updated to the latest version of Codeignitor

Overall, I really enjoyed this course to get a deeper understanding of CodeIgniter, especially understanding more the user/session part. The course is really nice and also gives a good introduction into Ajax and Javascript on-the-fly. You have to pause a lot in between to sync your code with the lecture but I prefer this over having a slow speaker. Though, some small drawbacks: there was a lesson, where suddenly code appeared from nowhere (was included in a download file of previous lesson but not mentioned) and with current bootstrap version (3+) some things changed but all-in-all nothing which could not be solved. Overall: great start to get deeper into CodeIgniter!

This course isn't a comprehensive covering and a lot of updates have been made to both NetBeans and CodeIgniter since the course was created. I wouldn't recommend it for a novice or anyone with only a few hours of programming under their belt. I'd request a refund if it wasn't past the 30 day mark. Unfortunately though, I didn't start it immediately after my purchase.

Great overall introduction to CodeIgniter, MVC, and JavaScript/jQuery. Best if you had some programming experience before jumping into this course. I wish it would go more into depth into CodeIgniter for students coming from an MVC background, including a better way to extend the CI classes, developing a module system, and templating. There are inconsistencies with how code is written as examples, where we should be learning "best practice" - this has its pros and cons with the course. For example, there are errors and bugs with the code as he writes and demonstrates it to students; however, you find yourself yelling at your monitor, Dora the Explorer style, what he's missing or where the typo is at. I can say I was never disengaged from the material. Overall, a great starting point for jumping into CI.

Author types super fast. Good overview of PHP CodeIgniter with jQuery and Bootstrap. A lot more Javascript than PHP it seemed. I think it would be helpful to talk about when to use constructors vs methods and the pros and cons of using ajax/javascript to create your views vs ajax and php popup. I seem many apps that use popups to load the view instead of in-line editing.

Jesse does a great job of bringing you through the Code Igniter framework while simultaneously providing real world experience by developing a simple application with you. I learn by example and have wanted to engage Code Igniter for some time and after this course feel I can begin to tackle and implement it into my own projects.
