PHP for Beginners (Udemy.com)

I recommend the course! Though it might be overwhelming at some points for absolute beginers, it is worth the effort to get the full picture how php works with mysql. This is also a project based course. Use the code at the end of each lecture if necessary or you are in a hurry and you will get to the end of the project. For those completely new to web development, to get the most out of this course, even though html, css and database intros are covered in this course, I would still recommend to take some one hour YT crash courses on html, on css, on javascript or jquery, and on sql, to get the idea what a frontend is, and what a backend is, what functional programming and what object oriented programming is as it would be much easier to follow the main project. I will definitely take more of Dave's courses.

There is no course or instructor more underrated than this. Among the many courses I've taken here, this is one of the best. It implements all the basic features you'd need for an application. Resources are attached to every video, not just source code, but also resources that can help you explore the topic further which is how you should learn. I had some background in PHP but I after this course I know how to right much cleanr ,readable and maintainable code and we got to implemnt OOP and best practices. The videos are short and concise without compromising the quality. In such a short period of time, Dave is able to pass on so much knowledge. As far as the Q&A is concerned, I must also mention that Dave answers all questions quickly and provides detailed answers to the questions so this is a big plus! I would like to see a section about APIs included in addition to expanding on the SQL sections.

Dave Hollingworth is probably one of, if not the best teacher on Udemy, especially in the field of coding. I took other classes on building a CMS from scratch on Udemy, but Hollingworth is the only one that responds to questions in a timely matter and helps me troubleshoot. Hollingworth serves information in bite-sized-pieces, structures lessons meticulously and in an orderly way. No other instructor that I encounter on Udemy does this at the level of Hollingworth and I took a lot of classes. I still use my blog, built with guidance from Dave. I am missing things, like comments section, but Hollingworth might update his classes. Hollingworth helped me realize my dream of building a blog from scratch. Sure, I might need to take the class again for retention, because it is A LOT to digest and it is overwhelming, but know I will understand so much more. Heck, I already do. Dave he helped get me through it. There is no better teacher that I have encountered yet on Udemy. One area that needs improvement is metadata, which is non-existent. The blog cannot really be deployed online as posts are miscategorized. You could post a review of a fiction book, for instance, and the blog will show the plot as your own story.

One of the best server-side programming languages taught by one of the best instructors here on Udemy. Today I finished this course and are grateful in many ways. The knowledge is extremely well structured and presented with a lot of helpful tips and tricks with reference to security, performance, simplicity and clarity. Last but not least I have a Blog-App running on a liveserver that makes a lot of fun and that is a good starting point for big projects. It's so hard to find a good PHP course on Udemy. With good coding practices and course structure. And we are very lucky to have a teacher like Dave Hollingworth here. He is a real professional, always ready to help and answer all questions in the comment section. PHP Basics Course starts with the simplest and ends with really tricky things like Exceptions. But in Dave's narrative, you won't have a problem. Teacher has perfect English pronunciation and calm voice. :) Recommend! You won't regret.

Mr Hollingworth has created a truly outstanding course that takes you from Hello World to a simple but functional Content Management System (CMS) in PHP. The course is well structured and the presentation is polished. Covers an amazing breadth of topics such as application architecture, object oriented design, security issues, usability, and refactoring. In addition to its focus on PHP the course also covers SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to the extent necessary to build the CMS. Great use of refactoring as a teaching device. Instead of just walking through a collection of unrelated code samples the CMS code is built as you progress through the course. When new concepts are introduced the instructor will then refactor the existing code to make use of those ideas such as the move from procedural to object-oriented programming.

Positive points: security during the coding and error handling was considered, the teacher provides feedback and is helpful, it covered much more than basic PHP and leads you from start to finish until you be able to publish your project online. You can expect finishing this course and feeling like a programmer that will think about what is doing, the course content in total was above my expectations. Negative points: the instructor copies and pastes a lot if you will follow what he is doing typing it yourself the course will take 3 times longer than actually is. He makes somethings in one way, and after it, he shows you how to move the code around in a "better" way of structuring, It drives you to a to confuse logic and understanding, I like the fact I saw multiples ways of doing the same thing, but I believe it was better if he has just told the right better way from the beginning of it. Details to improve: the DateTime type from the exercises needs to be updated to text if it is not compatible with every browser, lots of students will be stuck here.

For a beginner's course I felt this was quite steep. I'm not a total beginner in coding albeit PHP was pretty new for me. I found the course progressed a little bit too fast at time, especially the copy pasting and having to pause all the time to copy/write the code was something I couldn't get into. It takes the flow out of the course, and at points I felt the teacher did not always explain entirely what he was pasting on the screen. Additionally some of the course was a little out of date such as the datetimepicker fiasco, but I took that as a healthy challenge to somehow code around it and get it to work anyway, so that was kind of fun, challenge accepted and no harm done! Plus browser change so fast nowadays it's impossible to keep it up to date all the time, which I can appreciate. I do feel A LOT of content got covered in this course which is great, especially from a security and safety point of view. The teacher spends a lot of time on input validation and making sure the code cannot be exploited. Probably half the code written is just around security. I thought that was amazing especially in this day and age, where security is a must have and just as important as a functional UI. Well done on that part! I definitely need more practise and could probably do with an easier course or two prior to this one, and then coming back to this one and do it all again, as some parts really went above my head. Nevertheless I do not regret purchasing this course, it's a great course which covers a lot of ground, a lot more than I expected for a "PHP beginners" , emphasis on "beginners" course. I would give this course a 7.5 out of 10. ~Maarten

I really want to emphasize that obviously Dave is a PRO when it comes to PHP and I think (my opinion) no other course on UDemy comes close. But I have 1 major and 1 minor complaint about the course, one of them is actually a strength (depending on who you are and what level of php your'e in): 1) Dave explains how to approach a problem using different methods. The way he does it is that during his explanation or even several sections later, he would introduce this new and supposedly better way of approaching an issue by re-editing the code of many .php files that are connected to each other. Sometimes, that would require him shuffle those files around and even deleting them. Now this might appeal to many, especially the inquisitor or deep type of learners, but I think i'm not alone when I say that this method is a bit confusing, especially as a beginner. Going back and forth between many .php files and editing them gets more confusing as you move forward. Then again, as I mentioned previously, this can be a very positive thing for people whom REALLY want to understand php because in an ideal world, nothing is perfect and mistakes are inevitable. This is a great way to introduce you to real life scenarios where you have to get use to modifying a file and as a result many other subsequent files that are connected to each other. 2) I Love his method of pasting the code without leaving the page (have no freaking clue how he does that) rather than typing them out and this method definitely saves a lot of time the course takes. Although many didn't like that method, I loved it. My problem is when he pastes some code that are at the top of the page or at the bottom, you do not get to see where the code has started or ended and that does get annoying pretty quickly. Will end on a positive note by saying that you will get the fastest and most comprehensive feedback you will ever dream with an instructor.

Dave is the best teacher by far, hands down, slam dunk. You get the idea. He is very helpful, very prompt in responding and his responses are really informative and not just to "going through the motions" like other teachers. He even gives you references to increase your knowledge. He really goes the extra mile to help his students. It is incredible where he gets his dedication, enthusiasm and energy. He will even help you with some questions outside the course but I try to not abuse it. I am looking forward to other courses he will offer in the future.
