Gary Carpenter

Hello! I'm Gary Carpenter, a senior data analyst / Power BI Developer, providing impactful Power BI report insights to one of the largest CPG companies in the world.

I’m advanced and trained in various BI software such as Power BI and Microsoft Excel just to name a few.

I’m also a freelance web designer. As I further developed my Power BI skill-set, I noticed there was and still is a huge need for Power BI developers to learn the basics of UX/UI when it comes to Power BI report /dashboard creation. I learned this skill-set early on as a web designer. It's equally critical in Power BI, however it's not commonly taught in depth.

The User Experience and Interfaces that you deliver will determine if your insights are digestible or even utilized. Now more than ever, it’s important we focus on these neglected skill-sets in Power BI so we can deliver the most impactful reports to our end-users and clients.

I’m on a mission to teach all Power BI Report developers how to up their design skills quickly and effectively.

This course gave me a solid understanding of the UI/UX side of Power BI, and I truly loved it. The instructor explained everything clearly, and I learned how to organize my data and visuals in a much better and more professional way. The best part was learning how to build a clean, dynamic dashboard with unique design techniques. It really changed the way I approach reports now. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their Power BI skills and create dashboards that stand out!

I understand that the course aims to create an existing PBI report. However, there are many repeated concepts (for example, how to align the visuals, bookmarks, the four drillthroughs, and the tooltips), which makes it tiring. I think they could have taken the opportunity to explain other things, such as: - How to create a theme file (is there a specific website for this or not?). - Why it is preferable to use Microsoft-certified visuals. - How to determine the positions and the number of cards to use. - Why it is necessary to place some icons in Power BI instead of PowerPoint.

This course was wonderful!! I am beginning my data analyst journey and it seems like there’s a want to show you how to create complicated measures and learn intricate DAX code and get super into the weeds of the technical capabilities of Power BI. Although that is part of the equation, the other part which is highly overlooked is the design related nuances of creating a wonderfully functional and visually appealing report. Becoming familiar with positioning, grouping, bookmarks and using measures to dynamically change the fill were all great to get to explore. At the very end of the lesson, the “Learn More” buttons you want linked up to bookmarks that weren’t created previously but it’s a quick fix to create them. Also, I was wondering if there is a place to find a coordinate grid for vertical and horizontal alignment? Or if it just trial and error until we get a feel for the canvas? Thanks Gary for your calm tone and thorough instruction. I will definitely be on the lookout for more videos from you!

I would give this course a 10 star rating if it were possible. This is definitely not a course for beginners, so please beware. This is also not a course on DAX and Data Modelling. This is a course on Data Design and Gary takes it to a level that is way way above the others in this part of the Power BI eco system. I will be using many of his techniques in an almost identical use case that I am working on. Could not have come at a better time. Thank You again Gary. This is a WOW class.

After finishing the whole course, I can say the visual techniques and presentation used in this course is great. However, the visual add-on used for users portrait display is exclusive for those who have work or school emails to access the MPBI App Marketplace. This is unfortunate as it was one of the major selling point of the course and could have been noted in the course requirement. Also, the last class video for the 'Learn more' buttons refer to new bookmarks that hadn't been explained anywhere in the videos. I guess it was simply forgotten during the making of the course. For those 2 issues that I mentioned, I had to make a "Workaround" solution to solve these problems. Which is unfortunate as you expect to purchase a class where you can achieve everything showed in the curriculum. Just need to solve these 2 issue and course would be 5 stars. Overall, it is a great course if you're looking to step up your reports aesthetic and navigation process, and I am looking forward to more content by the teacher in a near future!

I can honestly say that this course has been a game changer for me. I'm in the fairly early stages of my Power BI journey and this course has opened my eyes as to the possibilities, especially with regards to design and layout, as well as clever tips and tricks to manipulate visuals. It has really made me feel excited about the subject and shown me that I need to think differently and creatively when designing BI tools. Thank you Gary, getting insight and knowledge from someone with your experience is invaluable. Please make more like this, it's excellent, I'll buy them all day long.

Thank you Gary Carpenter! As he specified, this is not a theoretical course on Power Bi and DAX but a practical course on creating modern-looking reports. My assessment is very good! Just one tip: I would also take care of the publishing aspect in Service with respect to graphics. For example I would show how the report/dash looks once published and how to do to eliminate the annoying "command descriptions" or the "header icons". Thank a lot Domenico

I thought that this course by Gary Carpenter was absolutely phenomenal, a deep dive into how to get a better UX experience out of Power BI which can create pretty ugly visualisations by default. He really goes very deeply into the properties and shows how to do very tricky things like Selections and Bookmarks, how to position things accurately, how to use external graphics (.png and .svg) and finally he shows how to do drill-throughs and sophisticated tooltips. I have one criticism and that is that even though he takes you through every step, he doesn't really verbally explain why certain steps are needed, for example why do you need filters on the drill through page or why hide the filters as he seems to want to do with all the built-in filters (rather than the custom ones). But if you want to up your Power BI UX game, this is pretty much the only course in town and it will be very helpful I'm sure. Thank you Gary.

Very good course. Following along with the building helped a lot with learning the design features and all the layers you can build up in PBI. I learned several new abilities and have a good idea on how to design projects I am currently creating for work. I had the technical aspect of PBI down, but needed help learning the actual design and making a report and dashboard user friendly, intuitive, and visually appealing. This course delivered. I am interested to see what else this instructor releases.

If you are interested in taking your Power BI design skills to the next level, take this course with Gary. What are you waiting for? This is a course you will definitely finish. Gary does a fantastic job walking you through all the steps to get the course project up and running. His communication is clear and to the point, making it easy to listen to him. His passion for great design shines through, and it's evident that he really knows what he's talking about. Gary puts a fresh spin on traditional Power BI design, offering lots of invaluable design tips. You will learn how to work with visuals in ways that you never thought were possible! Overall, this is by far one of the best Power BI courses I've taken to date.
