What you will learn

  • Build tables, matrices and card visuals that stay readable when the data gets big
  • Choose the right visual for the question - column, bar, line, pie, treemap, waterfall and geographical
  • Use slicers and filters at visual, page and report level so people can answer their own questions
  • Run trend analysis with line graphs, trend lines and forecasting to show where the numbers are heading
  • Use Visual Calculations to add running totals and period comparisons without writing any DAX
  • Publish reports to the Power BI Service, build dashboards from them, and set up alerts and subscriptions
  • Create workspaces, publish apps, and set up a mobile view so your report works on a phone
  • Apply custom visuals and themes, and analyze your published Power BI data back in Excel

Course Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Every lesson in this course is written, created and recorded by me. AI is used only to help produce supporting images and written materials around the lessons.

You have built a Power BI report and it works. Then somebody asks whether they can see it on their phone, whether it updates itself, and whether the sales team can look at their own region without seeing everyone else's.

That is where this course starts. You will build reports people can use without you - the right visual for the question, slicers and filters they can drive themselves, trend analysis that shows where the numbers are heading - and then publish them to the Power BI Service, turn them into dashboards, and share them with your team.

WHAT THIS COURSE IS, AND WHAT IT IS NOT

Most of this course is about building a report people will actually use: the right visual for the question, tables and matrices that stay readable, slicers and filters that let someone answer their own question without coming back to you, and trend analysis that shows where things are going rather than only where they have been.

The last part takes that report into the Power BI Service - publishing it, building a dashboard from it, setting up alerts and subscriptions, and getting it working on a phone.

If you have never opened Power BI, start with Complete Introduction to Microsoft Power BI. If you want to go deep on data models and DAX, that is Power BI Master Class - Data Models and DAX Formulas. This course is the visual and publishing half.

COURSE CONTENT AND OUTCOMES

  • Use Visual Calculations to add running totals and period comparisons without writing any DAX

  • Publish reports to the Power BI Service, build dashboards from them, and set up alerts and subscriptions

  • Apply custom visuals and themes, and analyze your published Power BI data back in Excel

A NOTE ON COPILOT AND AI

You may be wondering where Copilot fits in. Copilot in Power BI runs on a Microsoft Fabric capacity, which is something your organisation buys and switches on - not something you can enable yourself. Most people learning Power BI do not have it, and will not have it for a while.

So this course teaches you to do the work yourself: to choose the visual, build the report and publish it. That is the skill that stays useful whether or not Copilot arrives, because you still have to know whether the answer it gives you is right.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

I have been training business people to work with data since 2008, and publishing on Udemy since 2013. I now have 16 live courses with more than 400,000 students and more than 139,000 reviews, at an average rating of 4.6.

I teach Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Excel, Copilot in Excel, Looker Studio and Amazon QuickSight. What makes my courses different is that I teach the analysis, not just the tool - every lesson starts with a business question someone actually asks, and shows you how to answer it with software you already have.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

  • Thanks for the course, I can now make reports come alive

  • The course really does go through everything you will need to know to start using Power BI. It will definitely help me to create some really good visuals which can be used to show visually how my team is progressing and completing the daily work. Would highly recommend this course for anyone who needs to analyse data.

  • Ian explained each and every detail. Gave me good insights and information required to start working on PowerBI.

Everything you need is included - the data files, the practical activities and the completed walkthroughs. Enrol now and by the end of the course you will have a report your team can open on their own.

Instructor Details

Ian Littlejohn

I specialise in training business users to learn powerful methods and techniques to transform data into useful information and intelligence as well as learning strong data analysis methodology.

I completed my university degree in economics and emerged keen and eager to change the world. I spent the first half of my career working for multinational companies, on projects of various sizes, in different sectors, all revolving around analysing data of some sort and working with different software products, including Microsoft Excel.

I found that so many Excel users had a very basic understanding of how Excel works, and instead of using Excel to do the work for them, were doing all the work themselves, using old spreadsheet technology like macros instead of embracing technology like Pivot Tables. Pivot Tables were actually introduced into Excel in 1994 but many Excel users have avoided using them because they seem complicated and difficult to use.

In 2008 I decided to start my own training company and this was borne out of the passion I had to teach Excel users how to work smarter, not harder. As technology evolved, and new systems developed, I continuously expanded my training to include Power BI, Amazon QuickSight, Looker Studio, and most recently Copilot in Excel and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

excellent course. I was already familiar with PBI so this was review to some extent, but I still learned some tips and tricks I hadn't heard of that helped improve my efficiency at work with PBI.

By Roydin Mascarenhas on 6/26/2026

This Power BI course was a great learning experience with clear, step-by-step lessons and high-quality delivery. It made it easy to understand how to build interactive dashboards and reports. I especially found the sections on filters, slicers, and different visualizations very useful for creating meaningful insights. The course also did a great job covering Power BI Service setup, DAX basics, and integration with Excel. Overall, it was practical, easy to follow, and highly valuable for improving my data analysis skills.

By Samantha Pinn on 5/20/2026

I found it very insightful, the facilitators voice is quite monotone, perhaps adding a bit of variety to keep audiences engaged could assist. Other than this I thought it amazing and thoroughly enjoyed it.

By Agata Marcinowska on 1/28/2026

Thank you for this course, the scope was very well presented, interesting activities and many practical use cases. The role-playing was a blast! ;-)

By Gary Seven on 1/16/2026

A lot of widget instructions but lacking more when to use this graph or method as opposed to another , Also extremely bored of Sale data , how about SRE data or scientific?

By Dharmireddi Sisindri on 1/2/2026

I enjoyed the clear explanation of concepts and the structured approach, which made the learning easy to understand and relevant to my day-to-day work.

By Stephen Griffin on 11/12/2025

This is the third course I've taken with Ian as the instructor, I like how clear he is and the pace of each of the sections.

By Anonymized User on 11/9/2025

Ian does a great job explaining the essentials of Power BI as a visualization tool. I have a lot of experience working in Excel and PowerPoint, so the visualizations have been modestly helpful. This course is mostly front-end facing rather than back-end data modeling.

By Mallory MacDonald on 10/31/2025

The course is easy to follow and very straightforward despite the sometimes difficult concepts. It's a great way to walk through the majority of the functionalities in both the desktop and server versions of Power BI.

By Joanne Shepard on 10/29/2025

Incredibly informative, user friendly and easy to follow. Importantly, the course is as up to date as it can be with Power Bi functions
