Practical Java concurrency with the Akka Actor Model (Udemy.com)
Learn how to avoid thread-safety issues, synchronization and blocking with a really practical hands-on course
Created by: Matt Greencroft

What you will learn
- Concurrent Java programming using the Actor Framework
- How the Actor Model works and can be used as a better alternatives to Thread creation
- How to use the core Akka libraries to build robust, thread-safe, concurrent applications
Course Description
This course will cover how to use the Actor Model provided by the Akka framework to build robust, thread-safe concurrent applications with Java.
We'll be leaving behind the traditional problems with multi-threaded programming, such as dealing with non-thread safe variables, deadlocks, thread interruptions and more. Akka gives us a completely different approach. Instead of creating threads, using synchronization, locks, semaphores and countdownlatches, we'll learn how the actor model gives us a very different way to approach concurrent programming.
Learning the actor model from scratch can be a challenge, so in this course we build up the knowlege step by step, meaning you'll have no problems following along and understanding everything we do. And the course is full of practical real-world scenarios, so that you'll be able to take what you learn and apply it to your own projects. Our main case study is that we'll be building a basic blockchain mining application.
Please note that although Akka is built in Scala, absolutely no Scala knowledge is needed for this course. This course covers Akka with Java and we won't be writing any Scala code. It's ideal for Java developers with some experience (although you certainly don't need to be an expert).
This course covers the newer Akka Typed API only.

As now there is Apache Pekko instead, I've been doing the entire course using Apache Pekko instead of Akka. This has been going fine, one just needs to alter the package names when importing classes. I would suggest adding an one extra video to highlight that nowadays one should look for Apache Pekko instead of Akka and what that implies for the import statements.

Really good practical course for an introduction on Akka. I would certainly recommend this course to other people looking for gaining knowledge in this not trivial framework. Enjoyed the Blockchain example, even though a simpler problem domain would have been easier to work with and let me focus more on the system ifself. Anyway thank you so much, the teacher is awesome.

A very informative course, as I'm about to join a project that has implemented Akka. The course was easy to follow compared to other courses compared to other courses I've taken. There were a few errors here and there, but overall, with the help of the Q/A section, this course was great and I felt it was well worth the money spent.

This course provides the excellent foundation to learning Akka Actors. Though there are many resources available, I found most of them to be Scala specific. The Akka platform documentation, though available in Java flavor, it may turn out to be overwhelming. This course can serve as the primer for those like me, who wanted to explore Akka platform using Java, but have been stuck in the initial stages itself for long due to apparently weird code in the available examples. This course gradually explains the code by means of simple examples and then complex Case Studies and develops the good understanding about the Akka APIs along with the implementation strategies. The course material is quite dense and at some places require multiple passes to get a good hold on it. I am looking forward to other courses from Matt covering other modules in the Akka platform.

It's great! I could never get around understanding the dense documentation of the Akka Typed API, and this course helped me understand how to apply it. I believe the course would benefit from a small update from part of the author. There's some small, but critical, undocumented changes in 2 of the chapters which will make you wonder what you did wrong. You can however, easily find the solution in the Q&A section, posted by other users.

Excellent Explanation.. Very good resource for the beginners like me to get understanding on Akka and Actors communication. But examples(case studies) taken from chapter 7 can be simplified to follow the lectures easily. Our focus is going on to understand the Race algorithm because to match our understanding on the actors with the examples explained.

A fantastic course; I'm glad that I enrolled myself into it. It's not like one of those 40+ hrs courses that seem forever to complete. The instructor is very knowledgeable, well-versed, concise and to the point. I just loved the entire experience and look forward to taking up more courses from him. Thank you Sir!

Clear and concise introduction to Akka using Java. Does what the course sets out. Minor comments: after chapter 11 I didn't get quite so much serotonin but I got through it. Perhaps an exciting diagram for each section could help folks like me...I see Lightbend use iconography to help convey the issue being addressed. Also, I'd love to see Java courses on Akka HTTP, WebSockets, Alpakka etc.

I highly recommend this course for anyone who wants to learn how to use Akka in Java. The course is well planned, and each section builds very nicely on the previous one. Matt explains each concept in a clear and concise manner. I look forward to more advanced courses on Akka Streams and Akka Http.

First I went through the Akka documentation. But for a beginner it was bit difficult to understand the concept. Then I searched for several video tutorials and other online material. There were not much resources available for Akka. Then I found this course and it was really helpful to understand the concept from the scratch. And finally I hope an extended course explaining more complex usages of Akka with Java will publish soon. Thank you very much for all the guidance provided throughout the course.
