Course Description

In this course you will learn how to create a fully procedural walk/run animation system for characters, entirely within Unreal Engine 5.1+

This system will allow you to control every aspect of the characters walk and run style, with manual control over every bone, using custom logic and variables inside Control Rig (which allows for very good performance, allowing it to be used on many characters at once).

With a fully procedural animation system, your characters will fit within their environment and adapt their movement based on the surroundings. Whether the character is walking, running or anywhere in between, standing with one foot on a ledge, walking across stepping stones, running up a ramp backwards whilst spinning in circles, or any other situation your character may find themselves in.

To create this level of interaction with traditional static animations, you would need to create hundreds if not thousands of walk cycle variations and a complex system to blend between different animations at the appropriate times. Then if you'd like to make a tweak, such as to change the character's walk style or speed, you would have to start all over again.

Instead, with a procedural system, we figure out the logic that dictates how a human actually walks: where they place their feet, how their speed influences their stride time, how they swing their hips and spine to accommodate for their leg movements; to create an intelligent system that mimics how a human (or any character) would walk.

After you've created the system (which is included as a download for use or reference), you can adapt it to any character you may want in the future. For example, you may create a heavier & stronger character for your game, perhaps a robot / mech / monster, and instead of spending hours creating walk cycles to figure out how he should move, you simply tweak a few numbers in the procedural system to see how the character looks when he stamps his feet whilst walking, or takes longer strides, or swings his arms like a madman.

We don't rely on any major inbuilt functions within the engine, and so the same concepts and techniques can apply to any form of procedural animation. For example, after completing the course, you may want to take what you've learnt about creating procedural human animations and use the same concepts to make a procedural swimming animation for a shark. Or procedural weapon recoil controlled by the strength of the gun. Or a parkour climbing system. In theory, anything that can be animated can be animated procedurally. Is it always beneficial? No. But procedural animation is the best solution for any animations which need to be adaptive and change based on the environment, user input, or gameplay events. The best part is, everything we create in this course runs as a single node in the animation blueprint, allowing you to blend it with regular animations, or any input pose for the character.

This is not a course where I simply tell you what buttons to press. Every single step is explained, and the thought process behind decisions about what to do next is discussed, so you will always have an idea of why we're doing each step. We routinely take a look at what we have created so far to analyse it for further improvements.

The information and ideas in this course are not available anywhere else, trust me; I have looked, as all of the solutions are a result of 7 years of experimentation with procedural animation. This method of animation isn't being done to this degree by any game developers yet, only basic hybrid IK systems, and I strongly believe it will be the primary form of character animation in the next few years.

I have set up a Discord server where you can directly ask me any questions, or see the results of other students of the course. If there are any areas that you don't understand or need further explanations, I'll be happy to help, and look forward to seeing your results!

This course is exceptionaly well presented and the video content is in good short quality. I did it all in like 1 week and I have to say that its a lot of concentrated information in dense time windows. In the end you have like 15 functions and I didn't really know all the time what exactly happens where. Nontheless I really enjoyed doing the course. I always wondered how to make feet and legs adopt their angle to the ground underneath. That's really something you'll be using someday!

5 Star because you get your money's worth in this course and as a beginner to blueprints I was able to follow along the whole way. That said, it was difficult. The messy node structures mixed with some instances of vague narration lead to situations where I'd need to pause the video and meticulously follow node paths to figure out exactly where changes were being implemented. I also would have liked more in-depth explanations on how everything was working together but that's a nit-pick from someone who isn't very experienced. Overall, a great course and I hope to continue seeing more useful courses like this from the instructor.

This is the only good, completed procedural movement tutorial I could find. It was nice that the finished blueprint was included in the project given to us. I wished that it was more well documented and the errors were told to us beforehand. Towards the middle and end, I found myself wanting to copy the blueprint without trying to learn why we use certain functions or did things a certain way, just to get the course over with. That was how frustrating it was to get mine to work. Granted, I was using a different player pawn (the one from mixamo) but still, it was challenging to pull through. I mean, Lincoln does answer promptly but its not a step by step answer. More of a, do this or that and try to resolve it since there are many reasons why ours may not work. This can be hard if you don't know how to troubleshoot and work with unreal engine. I guess I was spoiled from other udemy courses like Stephan Ulibarri's courses that had a much more lively and robust discord/Q&A.

I believe procedural animation can be an incredibly valuable tool for any game developer. However, there surprisingly isn't very much information online that really helps you learn and understand it in any capacity. Lincoln seems to be the only person who understands it enough to teach it and he does an exceptional job explaining how and why things work. If you're interested in this course I'd also recommend his other course 'Control Rig for Unreal Engine 5'.

I enjoyed this course and I have learned many techniques on creating animations with the control rig. The instructor, Lincoln, teaches a lot about what the certain nodes do and then explains how to apply them to get a desired effect. An important aspect of this course is that Lincoln walks through how to implement the features of the procedural animation and this process of problem solving can be applied to many more procedural animations. After taking this course, I feel that I am capable of making many more types of procedural animations within control rig.

Procedural animations are so cool! Working through this course has been a blast. I did get a bit overwhelmed by the math involved and the explanations of the math functions weren't very detailed, but I think that's fine. Most of them are reused many times and in different contexts so by the end I had a decent idea of what each does. Some parts of the course I was just copying what Lincoln showed me but, again, that's fine by me. I don't feel like I'm 'done' with the course at all. I am now excited to begin experimenting and breaking things and really take my time to look back at certain episodes and try to fully understand each part. I have a lot of ideas for improvements and additions. Thanks Lincoln!

This is undoubtedly one of the top courses available on Udemy. It would be even more beneficial if a final lesson were included, dedicated to revisiting all the variables and values that can be customized to generate various versions of the procedural system. Personally, I plan on revisiting all the lectures to replace hardcoded values with adjustable variables. Apart from this minor suggestion, I must emphasize that this course stands out as one of the best in its class. The explanations are thorough and easy to follow, making the learning experience truly exceptional.

Overall this is a unique course because there is not a lot of content online at the same difficulty level for procedural animation. This course covers a lot of topics and in depth. I found this course frustrating on more than few occasions. One point is the messiness of the BP graphs which is sometimes hard to follow and can lead to mistakes that the students does and then a lot of time wasting due to it not being organized. The instructor doesn't elaborate on the math behind the calculations, so those who doesn't have at least a mediocre understanding of linear algebra and operators, will find it hard to understand and it would feel like copy and pasting. On few occasions the instructor uses some nodes without explaining why and what they are doing and asking you to believe that it does what he says, if you have knowledge in linear algebra and understanding in operations and chaining it will be easier for you. The animation setup you learn in this course is valuable and very dynamic. You can get a lot of variations on the animations just by tweaking a bit the variables of the control rig which is awesome, and just because of that I gave the course 4 stars. Otherwise I think it worth 3 stars

the information is great, and the principals being taught are able to be applied to other types of procedural applications. If I had to give a complaint it would be that the information could be delivered a little slower. following along with the information is tricky when I have to jump between unreal and the video player to constantly pause and rewind. that's just me being nitpicky though.

By Henry Blue on 4/12/2023

This course is top tier. Everything was explained in detail and the steps were easy enough to follow for a beginner. This course is very dense though. Following is one thing, but comprehending is another. It will take some studying these ideas to apply to a custom scenario but it's all here to learn from. I created several mistakes throughout the course and spent time re-watching and walking through the logic again. Whenever I got too stumped I messaged Lincoln through the discord and he was quick to respond and talk me through where to look to find the issue. He even took my project file and found the bug for me. This kind of support was so wholesome and kept me going even when things got complicated. I recommend this course to anyone interested in procedural animation in UE5. It is a complicated subject but creates results unmatched by other systems.
