Course Description
Join me on a sketching trip in beautiful, lively Guanajuato, Mexico! A travel sketchbook is a great way to capture a vacation, and it's a wonderful excuse to explore and observe when you're traveling. Whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner, this class will show you how to travel with art supplies and create quick sketches on the go.
We’re going to start with a simple building façade, and learn how to recognize familiar shapes and fit them together.
Building facades are a great place to start, because you don’t have to think about the rules of perspective just yet.
With a little simple measuring, you can get all the elements in place and have some fun with ink and watercolor.
Then we’ll zoom in and paint a charming, colorful old door, complete with peeling paint, ancient stones, and the other details that are so fun to capture in a sketchbook.
Finally, we’ll take a similar approach to a very basic landscape.
All three of these subjects have something in common: Once you’ve learned the basics of how to identify the big shapes, measure, and arrange them on the page, the rest comes pretty easily.
That’s why this is the best way to begin travel sketching.
And Guanajuato, Mexico is a beautiful place to start!

I'm the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen books, including The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Plants, and Girl Waits with Gun. I've been a full-time author for twenty years, and in that time my books have sold over a million copies worldwide and been translated into 17 languages.
I love talking to writers and artists, and bonding over the creative process. I started teaching so that I can inspire others to take the leap.
I believe that writing, drawing, and painting are all teachable skills. Forget about talent--it doesn't exist, and you don't need it. With some quality instruction and lots of practice, any of us can make meaningful, honest, and unique art and literature.
When I'm not writing or traveling on book tour, I'm painting and drawing in ink, watercolor, gouache, and oil. Come find me on my website or on Instagram to stay connected.

I have been enjoying outdoor sketching for a while but I tend to get lost in my zeal to capture every little detail. I love Amy's teaching style and the reasons why she edits out elements that don't help to convey the main picture. It's really liberating to me. Inspiring course all around.

Loving the way she is explaining all the little things that she thinks as she goes along because I'm new to this and don't necessarily think these things. But sometimes I do and it confirms my ability and what I see. I feel like I am correcting little things in what I do eg using broken lines rather than all solid changes the look of the door hugely.

I have not done any plein air painting yet and wondered how logistically to do this. I have watched painters and even made a coroplast foldable board to hold paints, water, and sketchbook. Amy shows how to pare your supply list even more enabling to sketch on the go.

Some great basic info. What I've realized is I need to work on drawing.

Vey nice instructions for the blue door, from drawing with pencil, fineliner, ink and finally watercolour, . I would have liked similar complete instructions on the other objects too which were only shown to demonstrate some examples.

I actually sit down most of the time and set my art stuff out. But I've mainly sketched locally. But this way of being prepared is really useful information. Because Amy mentioned actual brand names of her materials, I was able to look them up and search for them online. Most products I was able to find and this is really useful information! She is so frank and open that it makes me want to go out and sketch right away!

Great first time travel sketching course so far. She goes over all her supplies and why she uses them I lover her style of teaching. I can follow along or stop the video and catch up. She give just enough instruction without "filling" the audio with unnecessary information.

Loved the lesson on doors! They’re one of my favorite things to photograph, as well as paint. The inking technique is perfect for doors. Thank you so much for sharing your talents.

My 9 year old son and I took this course together at the end of a lazy summer. I wanted to spark some creativity in both of us. It was a fantastic course that any beginner can follow. I bought us both sketch books and we plan on continuing to spend time sketching and painting together! ❤️
