Course Description
Web API is usually the most important part in a web app.
This is how you expose your web app to the world, and to other users, and it must be fast, easy to use, and up-to-date.
And currently, we have at least three popular Web APIs we can choose from:
REST API
GraphQL
gRPC
And choosing the best one for your web app is not easy. There are quite a few factors that should be taken into consideration when selecting Web APIs, and this decision usually cannot be reversed.
And this course does just that - it teaches you how to choose the best Web API for your web app.
In this course we're going to start from the basics, and learn about the basic concepts of each one of the web APIs. We'll understand what are its goals, why it was created, and which scenarios it serves best.
Then we'll compare these web APIs and see what are the pros and cons of each one.
And lastly - we'll take a look at the Web API Flowchart, which will guide you through the decision process of the web API to use.
There is no other course like this! This is the only course that compares the most popular web API and helps you make the most important decision in your web app design.

This is a good course if you are short on time and want a brief understanding about the modern communication between system. It will help you to get an understanding about how the systems comment in modern software development.

Good course to get introduced to Web API paradigms. Go for it if you prefer audio/video based learning. The content has been presented in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. However, the course is basic and superficial. Lacks breadth and depth of concepts and understanding - less focus on why, how aspects. A single GenAI prompt can be substituted for content here easily.
By Mudasiru Adeyemo on 7/15/2025
While the brevity of this course is nice, it only really superficially compares the three API technologies. The comparison section should match the depth of the individual sections for each technology. Additionally, as others have mentioned, this course does feel lifted out of another set of courses.

Just a criticism: Every course repeats the same content for some parts. There may be good sides and bad sides to that approach. If someone has already taken a REST API Design course from you, then there are plenty of minutes wasted. You may say that "you can skip those parts", but in that case I can't ensure that I am not missing something new or some changed explanation special to this course :) That is the only criticism. Thanks.

The course covers what needs to be done but doesn't go in-depth on how to do it. And that's exactly what I was looking for: a course that compares different types of Web APIs, as the title suggests, without going too deep into implementation but focusing on how they should work in terms of architecture.

Memi created another great course. I always enjoy his courses as they get to the point with clear and concise descriptions. One comment though is I think the decision tree too quickly goes to gRPC if performance is an issue. GraphQL was created primarily for reducing the payload hence increasing latency performance. A small text-based payload can be smaller than a large binary payload. You just really need to understand your use cases.

Very good introductory course. One negative thing about it is that it's widely mentioned through out the course "we'll see more about this later" and it's never touched again. Case and point for instance when talking about metadata on gRPC

As a product manager, I wanted to understand the various APIs, their evolution and where we are going next. This course is super useful and well suited to my purpose. It is simple to understand with crisp content. Much appreciated!

Great course for people who want to have deep knowlage about API from the architectureal point of view. If you are looking for the course where you will be able to implement each kind of APIs it's not for you. But you can do it anyway after each section by yourself. So this is a good reminder of knowlage and thank you for it.

The course was great, I loved how the teacher explained the concept, that I found easy to comprehend and the slide was also graphically clear. If you want to have a general not very long overview on these matters i strongly suggest this course.
