Course Description

In this course, we're going to build a password manager inspired by popular applications like 1Password and LastPass. Our application will enable users to create secure accounts, allowing them to store login credentials for their favorite websites. These credentials will be easily accessible through a Chrome Extension, powered by a secure, robust JSON API from our Rails backend.

We'll begin by creating a Ruby on Rails 8, Full-stack web application. Leveraging the power of Hotwire, we'll create a lightning-fast Single Page Application (SPA). We'll also take advantage of advanced Rails 8 tools such as Active Record Encryption, ensuring sensitive user information like usernames and passwords are securely encrypted and safely stored in our database.

Next, while working in the same Ruby on Rails 8 web application we'll start building out a secure JSON API, implementing user authentication using JSON Web Tokens (JWT). Users who successfully authenticate will receive an expiring token to securely fetch their data through subsequent requests.

Finally, we'll use the Google Chrome Extension API and Hotwire (yes, you can use Hotwire outside of Rails!) to build a similar version of our web application as a Chrome Extension. We'll cover essential topics such as using local storage, communicating between the Popup and Content Script, retrieving URLs from active tabs, and automatically filling login forms with a single click.

CHANGELOG:
- July 17, 2025 (Section 1 - Lesson 3):
Update SafePassExtension zip file with missing assets.

The course is nice and well-explained. It will be good to have a little ruby general section in the beginning as well as general web section. Furthermore, some graphics with arrows/diagrams (what goes where and which function calls which) will definitely help us to visualize what is going on under the hood. Additional security section will come in handy.

I'm happy that the instructor shows many tips and Ideas to really improve UI. Not fancy, but really useful insights.

By Dan Daly on 2/1/2026

So far so good, it's the right pace for someone with some existing Rails knowledge.

By Nicolas Gleiser on 1/31/2026

Good content with a nice pace. I felt like a few concepts weren't fully explained, and we were sometimes just copying code without knowing what it was doing. About the CSS, not a problem, but when the title has "Hotwire" and a few concepts are not explained in depth, it's kinda strange. But good content overall

Amazing course and instructor. Clearly explains in simple terms how to set up a basic Rails password manager that works, then builds on top of that by showing how to step-by-step convert it into a SPA using Hotwire. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning Rails/Hotwire/Turbo.

Thank you for creating this course, I was pretty much completely new to rails and this gave me a great rundown and I now understand how to use and connect models, views, and controllers. P.S. It was very helpful keeping the small errors and seeing you debug them live.

As a non-native english speaker, I think the instruct speaks so fast, and I cannot fully understand him without the subtitles.

By André Jacobs on 9/17/2025

Thank you Nick! This was a really good course to get into Rails and to also understand how Hotwire can be used (a bit like htmx) instead of these SPAs like React. The Chrome extension was also very well explained. Looking forward to see Nick produce more courses like this.

By Benjamin Van Dam on 9/6/2025

There is very little explanation given and the course goes very fast. If you are a beginner, this course is definitely not for you. But if you have some Ruby and web development knowledge, it can be a great practice.

By Wojciech Bednarowski on 7/15/2025

Great course! The only thing to correct is the initial resources file. Some of the extension's files are not updated (e.g. styles for entries search bar or utils/inputs.js).
