Scaling Docker on AWS (Udemy.com)

This covered all the aws deployment topics I was hoping for. Simple enough for a beginner to follow, but in depth enough for your first production deployment. I appreciate that it was all CLI commands. I did have some frustrations with unsupported commands, package versions, and mac M1 support. I was able to find answers through other's questions. Any questions I asked received quick replies(really appreciate that!). But it would be nicer to update the video/pdfs with these updated instructions/commands or add more official notes about things working differently for architectures/versions.

This is a great course! A little too slow, I listened at 1.25x speed but I realize other users may benefit from Nick's pace. He was very detailed and explained many concepts that most people stepping into the DevOps world will benefit from. I'm not too happy about the reliance on classic ELBs as opposed to the newer ALB, because like most things AWS, it's only a matter of time before they deprecate the classic load balancers in favour of ALBs. I'm making it a personal assignment to perform the deployment sections using an ALB. Overall, I highly recommend this course and will be looking for more courses from this author. Thanks!

First of all , kudos to the instructor for making this course. What a wonderful intro to ECS I had!. Everything works as instructed. The reason for giving 1 less point to this otherwise 5 star course is the fact that amidst all the explanation of complex AWS setups , the course material can massively confuse you because of poor choice of nomenclature. Everything is literally named Dockerzon and it gets frustrating and difficult to track which dockerzon thingy was that ? The instructor can use simple terms like dockerzon_the_webapp or dockerzon_the_cluster. Also some light can be shown on ECS Fargate as well ( although the materials in the course work just fine!)

It's an awesome course, very direct to the point and with a real case app scenery, that is expandable to dockerizing other web apps and deploying them on AWS. The course also goes through topics as cost and SSL, what is pretty neat. It does assumes previous knowledge on Docker / Docker Compose so, if you don't have it, you will have some trouble to get through. As a point of improvement, some commands could be better explained instead of just read/typed. Definitely I recommend

We're in the middle of switching to all the real things this course is about at my job. So it was perfect for what I needed. I went from having to derail conversations to ask for reminders about the difference between (for example) a task and a service to being able to participate intelligently and help lead us through some of the design mine fields. There were a couple of places where things didn't quite just work as advertised. I never did manage to get the actual service running on AWS. There are several forum posts around those sorts of issues, and Nick's quite responsive. But I don't care enough about Rails to try to debug it. I was tempted to mark it down to 4.5 stars for that. But, honestly, a few rough edges aren't that bad. And debugging the problems would have been great homework assignments if I had more time.

Nick obviously knows what he is talking about and explains each lecture very clearly. I wouldn't hesitate offering this course to anyone. As with any IT course, my only quibble is it could be updated to reflect newer versions of docker, ngnix, and the latest Amazon Linux ECS AMI, etc. I managed to get most labs to work by troubling shooting, but this could be made easier with some minor updates. For example some depreciated flags in docker. Overall great job, definitely worth doing, and associated pdf commands form great revision material once the course has been completed.

Nick did a great job covering the essentials of using Docker on AWS in a scalable way with this course. I now feel much more comfortable with the possibility of going directly to AWS for my applications as opposed to using something simpler (albeit more constrained and more expensive) like Heroku. There were a few places where I had minor issues due to changes AWS and/or Docker have made since the course was released, but I was able to sort them out using existing posts in the course's Q&A boards, as well as the techniques covered in the course. Nick was very responsive after asking how I was doing in the course - we had a brief conversation about my discovery and solving of these issues, and he was so fast, it was almost like IM! It's really good to know he cares about his courses and his students and gives that much attention to supporting them.

Its great that course is focused on CLI. Still, it would be nice to give a hint where corresponding UI is located in AWS Console UI. I knew that this course is not matching for me 100% because i use .net core for backend. But it was not too hard to replace Ruby with .net core. Maybe its worth splitting RoR app into frontend as SPA on S3/CloudFront and backend that provides REST api only - looks like more modern approach these days and will help understand AWS even more. Also, too much specifics on nginx for course targeted more on docker in AWS. I just used "jwilder/nginx-proxy" docker image for reverse proxy - this allows to not get into all these nginx configs (much simpler). What would be nice to see in this course: - I believe its possible to use EC2 autoscaling groups for ECS - thats interesting. - Advanced moniroting/logging This course let me experiment a lot - and thats main benefit. Thank you.

The title is a bit misleading. It says "Scaling docker on AWS" however Nick never even mentioned the word "scaling" let alone "Auto Scaling Groups". But what he did mention more than often was "go ahead"... I understand that the CLI is easier to write PDF's for, but I guess the browser is a lot better for students to understand stuff. The course is overall a good and basic introduction to get started. I paid 14$ on black friday sale, so I'm overall satisfied. Cheers
