The Docker for DevOps course: From development to production (Udemy.com)

Updated for Docker v19.03+. Learn how to build and deploy web applications with Docker in an automated way.

Created by: Nick Janetakis

Last updated June 2022

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,784 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a deployment course that uses Docker, not a pure Docker course. Across 95 lectures and about 8 hours, Nick Janetakis walks through a Flask app and a Rails app, then moves them to a staging server and a production server. Along the way he adds systemd, puts nginx in front, registers a domain and finishes with a free SSL certificate. No Flask or Rails experience is needed, because the focus is on shipping the app, not writing it.

Reviewers like the real-world slant. One says Nick is the only teacher who takes students through the issues of production work with clear explanations, and others call him patient and clear. The complaints are consistent, though. Several say he opens pre-written files and talks through them instead of building them live, which feels hurried. One reviewer expected to write a Dockerfile from scratch afterward and could not. Others say the course spreads across too many tools, and that later corrections interrupt the flow.

The last update was June 2022, so expect some older tooling. Reviewers mention catch-up videos for newer Docker versions near the end, though one would rather the dated examples were cut. Of the 1,784 ratings in the data, 793 are five stars and 618 are four stars, so most people leave happy. It suits developers who want deployment skills. Anyone after a Docker-only primer may be better served by Docker's own docs, which one reviewer called the best resource.

Best forDevelopers who can already build a web app and want to see it deployed on a real server with nginx and HTTPS.
Skip it ifYou want to learn to write Dockerfiles from scratch, or want Docker alone without nginx, systemd and server setup.

Pros

  • Takes a Flask and a Rails app from local setup through staging, production, a domain name and a free SSL certificate
  • Nick is described as patient, clear and focused on real cases and the issues of production work
  • Covers the surrounding pieces students need to go live: systemd, nginx and DNS
  • No Flask or Rails background needed, since the emphasis is on deploying rather than building

Cons

  • Last updated June 2022, and reviewers say some examples are dated even with the catch-up videos
  • Often walks through pre-written code and scripts instead of building files live, which feels rushed
  • Docker is one topic among several, so it will not teach Dockerfile writing in depth
Nick is all about real cases and helps you develop real life app. I took a lot of courses, and found out that he is the only one that takes you through the issues of production dev with clear explanations.

Course Description

From Docker novice to DevOps expert in 7 hours

Huge update for 2020: Many videos from this course were completely re-recorded to bring everything up to date. All of the Docker content is up to date as well as all of the other technologies we use, such as nginx, Ubuntu, Debian and more!

Looking to level up your skills by deploying your own web application? How about furthering your career by picking up years worth of general DevOps skills?

Prepare to get excited about Docker (and this course)!

Dozens of massive companies are using Docker every day but the awesome thing about Docker is it works incredibly well even for the smallest projects.

Nowadays learning about Docker and general DevOps skills is gaining massive momentum in the tech scene. It's similar to how mobile app development was a few years ago.

Companies are EXPECTING new developers to manage the full life cycle of their web applications. This means BOTH developing and deploying your apps.

Here's your chance to STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE.

The Docker for DevOps course isn't just your run of the mill introduction to Docker course, you can get that info by skimming Docker's website.

This course shows you WHAT you can build with Docker and HOW to do it -- of course you'll learn the Docker basics along the way!

Together we'll walk through developing and deploying a multi-service Flask and Ruby on Rails application (more framework examples will be provided as bonus lectures too).

Oh and don't worry, you won't need Flask or Ruby on Rails experience to understand this course. The emphasis is on deploying a web application, not building one.

Learning by example is a great way to retain information and learn quickly.

"The course has a perfect balance between theory and practical material. At the end of the course, you have a working and secured web app with fully automated deployment along with an understanding of how it works. This is exactly what I wanted from the course."

Ready to level up?

Here's what you'll get when you sign up to my course today:

  • You'll learn how to get your development environment set up to run Docker. Windows, Mac and Linux users will be able to follow along.

  • Next, you'll learn the Docker basics and we'll complete a hello world example.

  • You'll Dockerize a Flask or Ruby on Rails application and pickup a few best practices on how to create a production ready application with those frameworks.

  • You'll learn how to create a staging server so you can test your app.

  • You'll learn how to keep your app running forever by getting a crash course with systemd.

  • You'll learn how to configure and serve your app over SSL (HTTPS) with nginx.

  • You'll get $10 in free hosting credits on DigitalOcean to deploy your application.

  • You'll learn how to purchase and configure a domain name (and make it work with your new server).

  • Finally, you'll learn how to obtain a FREE SSL certificate and hook it up.

I'll also give you tips on where to go next for topics such as:

  • Adding more services to your app

  • Scaling out beyond 1 host

  • Monitoring and alerting

  • Hooking up a continuous integration pipeline

  • Dealing with centralized logging

  • Looking into using various configuration management tools

You're getting all of that AND additional bonus lectures for just $25.

This course is jam packed with over 100 lectures, 7+ hours of videos and quizzes. You'll also receive full PDF text directions for each video lecture and complete source code examples.

"This course was really well put together and covers a wide range of topics around both DevOps and Docker. I chose it primarily for the Docker side, but learned a lot about Ruby and Python too. I am very pleased with this course."

Why is it worth using Docker?

  • Saves a ton of time and headaches when setting up development environments.

  • Easily move an application across environments or servers.

  • Removes issues such as "well, it worked on my machine!".

  • Makes developing with teams a much more pleasant experience.

  • Works on most major platforms.

  • Has amazing support on most cloud hosting providers.

  • You won't need expensive hosting to deploy your web applications.

  • Docker as a company is well funded and moving forward quickly.

"Well structured course with high quality information. Source code is really well written and well structured. The tutor support is like 24/7. He replied to my all questions within few hours and most of the times in few minutes."

Why is this course for you?

After finishing this course you'll have enough knowledge about Docker and general DevOps skills to start applying for jobs, so by investing in this course you're jump starting your DevOps career.

Or perhaps you have a thirst to broaden your skill set and want to save a ton of time by avoiding the tedious task of researching all of these topics on your own.

In either case, you're going to walk away with years of knowledge and best practices that I've accumulated while working as a consultant.

"Meticulous hands-on descriptions and recipes of how to utilize Docker and a lot of associated software in the real world scenario of building a web-app! I especially enjoyed the clear delivery of content: well structured, superbly produced, written summaries for each shown topic."

Who am I?

Hi, I'm Nick. I'm a consultant by day and open source contributor by night. I write software and help companies being their ideas to life.

I love learning new things and then sharing my knowledge with others.

I don't have a fancy degree but I do have experience shipping code and explaining my thought process to others while I talk about various technical topics.

Actually, this course shifted from writing docker files to how to deploy at staging & production. Also Nick had a pre compiled deploy script with which he does all the staging & production magic. I expected that at the end of the course I would be able to write a Dockerfile from scratch but I am not able to write one from scratch instead i spent my most of the time in setting up the system for being in sync with nick tutorials. Dont recommend to those who are just wishing to learn docker. I recommend them to rather use docker docs which i found out later as the best resource. But yeah if someone wants to get to the very core of deployment & production then this is the best resource ever which walks you through the entire steps with broad details. This is my honest review & i am not here to impress someone. Thank You! Best of Luck!

I knew absolutely nothing about docker and now I think I can roll out a server with docker containers. I really liked the approach to run a web app with many services (Postgres and redis), allowing us to play with a multi service environment. The focus on how to prepare a staging and production environment is a win. As a bonus, you learn how to really automate deploy using git hooks. I'd recommend this course to everyone interested in learning docker.

In general Nick seems to be very confident and it's quite pleasant to watch his tutorials. I'm having a lot of issues using newer software and although there is an updated section at the end of the course it's unpleasant to follow the course this way sometimes. So if you do NOT follow along the course exactly - for whatever reasons - expect issues! But as a programmer you're supposed to get along with that and so do I. (and there are a lot of bugfixes and hints in the Q&A and within the videos as well) Besides that this course already helped me a lot to become more confident in using Docker and I'm pretty positive that it will for the rest of the course as well! So if you don't mind fixing stuff while watching tutorials I really recommend this course as I din't find something similar yet!

One of the best Docker courses on Udemy right now (I actually went through a few). It contains a good balance of theory and practical materials. While this is a course about Docker, it touches a lot on other useful concepts used by DevOps, such as lightweight automatic provisioning of servers, git hooks, etc. which I found really useful. The instructor also responds to queries really quickly. A possible downside is that it lacks the coverage of more advanced/modern Docker features, but those could well be made into another course altogether. Overall a 5-star course that any new DevOps should take!

Excellent course so far. At first I was hesitant to set up a VM just for this class but I've found that process to be educational as well. The course moves at a brisk pace. I've done a few other classes that explained each step and concept thoroughly, which was great, but I'm finding this pace to be appropriate to my experience level. It dives right in and hits the ground running. Conclusion: Fantastic course! I learned so much. This has all the nitty gritty details about using Docker in fully functional dev, staging, and production environments. Thanks Nick!

Learning requires effort. So will this course. No course is perfect. As neither is this. However, I really enjoyed it. You will learn the fundamentals of Docker and, at the same time, you will get an environment comprising various tools that will let you deploy to staging and production servers. This environment really works, allowing you to customize it further as you may wish, and letting you do real worker when you're ready. This is really great. As various tools are used (ssh, systemd, git, docker, postgresql, redis, flask, nginx), you should expect spending some time if you aren't acquainted to some of these technologies, as I wasn't, although the author does describe some of them as much as required to make all work. I would recommend getting some good cheat sheets on git, docker, ..., and following the course closely to get things working first. Later you may gradually change what you want or need, as I found troubleshooting things difficult in docker containers . You may find that "docker logs " will be your friend. That git commit --allow-empty -m "To force push" may be helpful if you need to push things again (new server, or when images are deleted). And, don't forget to "seed" postgresql database when is first used ..., or you may spend some hours trying to debug what is not wrong. Regarding support, I had a few issues - mainly because I made some changes that caused errors - used Q & A, and was amazed when author replied in a few minutes. Many thanks to the author.

Certain concepts are not very well explained - particularly docker-specific concepts. Taking a little more time to explain the structure of a docker project's files would be hugely beneficial for a course about Docker. The approach seems to be "download the code I already wrote and let me go over what each line does," which makes the instruction feel hurried and difficult to keep up with. It would be easier to follow and comprehend as a student if the files were written from the group up on screen in a step-by step manner, and the thought process explained. I understand that this is not a course on shell scripting, Ruby on Rails, Flask, or Linux, so this approach is fine for non-docker code. However, for at least files like Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml, and .dockerignore, it would be more beneficial to write them on-screen and take the time to explain each step and the rationale behind it. Especially since there isn't really all that much content in these files, it would not make the videos substantially longer. They would be much easier to comprehend though. Finally, the classification of this course being an "all-levels" course is incredibly misleading. As a professional software developer, I and finding the course more difficult to follow than other all-levels or beginner-level courses, because it assumes the user has a working knowledge of Linux, shell scripting, Python/Flask, Ruby/Rails, virtual machines, web servers, ssh, and many other technologies that a novice would have no knowledge of. I am not saying this course should be made more accessible to novices - DevOps its self is an advanced topic that many comp-sci graduates hardly know anything about. However, in my opinion, this course should be listed as "intermediate" level at least, as a beginner would be completely lost almost right away, and likely request a refund.

By Kim Teigen on 5/2/2016

This course touches upon several key concepts to make use of docker in a dev ops envorinment. The information is quite good. The cons about this course is most of the time we are watching a pre-made resource (code/scritp/config file) that is explained while jumping between several resources and terminals. I personally do not think this is the best way to learn. It is way better to explain it while making it.

By Edward Quick on 1/16/2016

This course was really well put together and covers a wide range of topics around both DevOps and Docker. I chose it primarily for the Docker side, but learnt a lot about Ruby and Python too. The instructor's experience comes across, and he provides a very informative review of different products associated with docker. I am very pleased with this course, and have to say it was quite challenging in parts, but the instructor provided fast helpful responses to get me back on track. I highly recommend it.

This was my first course on udemy.com. I am relatively new to web dev and had some difficulties understanding the Docker / Docker compose work-flow by following their documentation and tutorials. In my opinion Nick did great job by demonstrating the entire process of using Docker / Docker compose on development, staging and production servers. I like his manner of presenting the material, splitting it into sections and lectures. The overall quality of course exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this course to everyone who wants to understand Docker and put it in use asap.
