Course Description

Learn the Docker Fundamentals and Then Dockerize Your Own Web Apps

This course is meant for anyone looking to improve the way they build and distribute applications. You could be a web developer, sysadmin, operations manager, or someone who is part of an IT / testing / QA team.

  • Developers use Docker to set up and run applications without the headache of having to install everything manually
  • Operators use Docker to distribute applications across environments consistently and optimize server resources
  • QA teams use Docker to quickly build test environments without having to deal with "but it works for me!" problems

By the time you finish this course you'll know everything you need to start using Docker / Docker Compose on your own projects.

This course was flawless in explaining every segment in detail while keeping it easy to follow along and learn. -- Brian K.

It doesn't matter if you use Ruby on Rails, NodeJS, Flask, Django, Java, Golang or any other language / framework. At the end of the day, Docker is a toolset that helps you package up and distribute your applications in a portable and repeatable way. You'll be able to set up entire development environments in a single command and run those same applications exactly the same in production with total confidence that it will work because you're just moving around special packages that Docker creates for you under the hood.

The days of "well it works for me!" or having to point another developer to a 20 page document on how to set up your web application are long over. Docker fixes those problems and so much more.

No prior Docker knowledge is necessary to take this course. We'll go all the way from "What is Docker?" to exploring what types of problems Docker solves to completely mastering Docker's core features (we'll cover Docker Compose in great depth too). Through out the process we'll go over Dockerizing simple web apps, complex multi-service web apps and I'll show you exactly how to Dockerize your own web apps.

I'm a big fan of learning by doing so this course has just enough theory combined with dozens of guided labs and challenges. This way you'll learn both the "why" and the "how".

Instead of sifting through 100+ scattered blog posts, this course lays everything out on a silver platter. I've done years of research and testing so you don't have to. All you have to do is sit back, relax and follow along with the videos. You're only a few short hours away from mastering Docker and applying it to your own applications.

I have been through very few learning experiences that were this thorough. Nick not only teaches you how to use Docker, but also how to troubleshoot Docker problems and research solutions. -- Dennis E.

What makes me suitable for teaching a course on Docker?

Hi, I'm Nick.

  • I've been a self taught software developer for the last 20 years. I've been actively using Docker since 2014. I also help train teams and individuals on how to "Dockerize" their applications.
  • This course is loaded with best practices and tips I've learned from years of real world experience and now I want to share everything I've learned with you.
  • I've answered over 4,000 questions on Docker over the years through my previous Docker courses.
  • I'm also a Docker Captain. Docker Captain is a title that Docker awards to select members of the community. Docker Captains are both experts in their field and are passionate about sharing their Docker knowledge with others.

Nick has always been quick to respond to my questions. I've never had a message fall through the cracks with Nick. He has become an invaluable mentor. -- Kyle. E

Bonus content:

  • Self contained notes that you can download and reference. It includes every command we run and all websites I visit on camera. No more hunting around videos to quickly find the content you want to review.
  • Over half a dozen code examples on how to Dockerize popular web frameworks.

The course is good but far from perfect. The greate thing you do practice a lot of manual docker commands. You get the feeling of the technology. So far I've been able to follow the lectures, exercises worked for me. The teaching style could be improved a lot. Although I really appreciate the humor, which you don't meet that much on Udemy, the slides with a single word are weird and not convenient. There is no resourse with any of the learning material in a written form, if you forget the explanation - you dont have wher to look. The HTML files where the links and commands are - slow and not convenient. Explanations themselves are often not that clear. Like saying "You should not be hosting anything on docker host in production" but not saying why or what is the problem and not showing any slide/visual. Yes , i know this is explaned in the next lecture, but many times, there are these criptic "do this/don't do that" which is not properly explaned. The explanations should be more full and clear. And more visuals should be included regarding what architectures are right or wrong. Also, the first 35% of the course were a lot of talking with too much detail (like versions etc) which, in my opinion, should be AFTER we learn the basics of the technology, and not before.

Among the three Udemy courses I have taken; this one is by far the best one. The teacher is charming especially with his sense of humor. (The teacher's echo joke caught me off guard.) The resources are up to date, plentiful, and really thought out. You can easily follow along when the teacher writes commands, even easier when you use the notes provided. The videos are edited, so fluff and dead air are trimmed out. Definitely a worthwhile course if you're learning Docker!

I love the teaching style and the professor's sense of humor. At times, he flies through the material, but it's always good to rewind a few times to let the knowledge sink in. Overall, great course for foundational knowledge in docker. I like that we can follow along, and the prof doesn't assume mastery of topics right away. My only gripe is that the course isn't 100% up to date, had to do some tinkering but it's part of the fun in getting things to work on "your version" of whatever your running. Section 7:40 I had to add this to my file below python -alpine: RUN apk update && apk add python3-dev \ gcc \ libc-dev that did the trick. Cheers!! Hope to see more great content soon!

Nick is a very knowledgeable instructor and knows Docker. Starting from the ground up in my opinion is the best way to learn something as complex as Docker. Knowing what a Dockerfile is and what it does before getting to docker-compose was a big help. I tried another course before this one and it was missing so much context that it was more of a course of commands and not so much about how Docker works. I highly recommend this course. I found it to be a thorough, compressive and easy to understand course on Docker.

By Eugene on 6/11/2020

it was useful, but in the course I didn’t have enough practice (development mode, productive mode, how to put everything together correctly, how to configure nginx - some realworld practice), and I additionally bought another course from another author. For this topic, I think it's normal: one course theory, one course practice. After completing two courses I was able to solve my task at work (put together mongo + node js + vueJS + nginx)

By Miša Brežanac on 5/16/2019

Very methodical, simple and straight to the point approach with examples that are applicable in real world scenarios. The instructor is easy to understand due to a very clean pronunciation, unlike many other authors on udemy which sound like they are using accented Klingon. Two very minor complaints I have about the course is that I haven't found much use for the accompanying notes and that surprisingly I wasn't able to find any info on some of the aspects of Docker which were obviously heavily used (EXPOSE comes to my mind). It might have something to do with when the course was initially released and what Docker supported at that time. In any case, if you are looking for a course which will teach you Docker for development purposes and don't care about deploying applications in production environments, which the course is not trying to teach, you won't go wrong with this one.

Good information and covers all the fundamental Docker and Docker Compose material to get a complete novice up and running. However, I found Nicks verbal presentation style to just be a complete wall of speech...like one big unending sentence. I truly believe that if there were more natural pauses in the presentation and between sentences / subject matter, the course would be far easier to follow, and thus more enjoyable. In the end, I got frustrated with the constant need to keep pausing the videos to absorb the info I was just presented...and this is coming from someone who can generally absorb stuff quickly. The information is accurate and good...but it felt just way too rushed. Slowing down the video using the speed adjustment that's built into Udemy was less than ideal because the audio stretching quality is absolutely terrible and then it was actually too slow on 0.75 (this is certainly not Nicks fault), but even so, it's the natural pauses in between sentences that I found were sorely missing. Other than that, I can't really fault the information contained within.

Excellent course! I am learning so much about Docker. I love the pace and the structure of the lessons, and the information is provided in the context of using Docker in real-life scenarios. The instructor is very responsive and you can feel his enthusiasm for the subject matter. I wouldn't hesitate recommending this course to people who want to know more about Docker. There are quick challenges at the end of videos, which is awesome, giving learners hands-on experience and reinforcing the lessons on the video recently watched. One thing I would really like is subtitles for the course to make it more accessible. (Edit: Nick clarified that the subtitles are provided internally by Udemy, and I agree, the quality of their subtitles needs improvement!)

very good teacher great experience also very responsive on support. course is clear and correct speed of learning. The intro helps a lot as it tells you what will be covered in the up coming section. I think taking the Flask course after would help a student a lot as it would be a first tutorial on docker + flask sort of the move over to develop a larger app. Several test applications are also used to demo how to use docker in the real world in this course which helps you understand better

This course gives a good overview about docker and docker-compose. It has also a few examples for own projects and many things to try out during the praxis tests. After this course you can start doing your own docker projects. Nick really feels confident about docker. He is speaking quick and therefore it is not necessary to speed up the course, as I do it for many courses to 1,5x speed, because it is already on this level :). Therefore the course is longer than expected. However at some points the screens flips very fast, without any pause before ENTER is pressed and you have to go back to see the command. Overall this course is a good entry to go up to speed with docker and docker-compose.
