Self-Hosting with Docker & Linux: Run Your Own Services (Udemy.com)

Replace SaaS tools, take control of your data, and run your own private infrastructure using open source software.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 260 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a 4.6 hour course, 55 lectures across 11 sections, that walks a beginner through building a private self-hosted setup. It starts with Linux basics and an Ubuntu install, then moves to Tailscale for remote access, Docker and Portainer, TSDProxy for HTTPS, a Homepage dashboard, and finally your own domain through Caddy and Cloudflare. Jason Cannon, a Linux systems engineer since 1999, teaches it, and the syllabus is built around doing rather than theory. It was last updated in September 2026.

Reviewers mostly like the teaching. They call it clear, practical and free of fluff, and one says everything works as described, which matters for someone new to Linux who cannot troubleshoot much. One student now runs a server for co-workers over Tailscale, with a Cloudflare tunnel for the company website. Criticism is mild but consistent. Some find it repetitive, with passwords and IP addresses read out again and again. Others want more on YAML files, registering a domain and how tunnels work, and one reviewer felt left to finish alone at the end.

Of 260 reviews, 236 give four or five stars, and the average sits at 4.4. At 4.6 hours it is short, and it sticks to one stack instead of comparing alternatives. Treat it as a solid starting point for a home server, not a full reference. If Tailscale-first access appeals to you, it is a good fit. If you want depth on networking or a long list of apps, plan to read more elsewhere.

Best forLinux newcomers who want to replace a few SaaS tools with Docker and Tailscale, following along step by step.
Skip it ifYou want deep coverage of YAML files, domain registration or tunnels, or a long course on running many apps.

Pros

  • Jason's explanations are clear and free of fluff, according to reviewers
  • Covers a full path: Tailscale, Docker, Portainer, a dashboard, then your own domain
  • Steps work as described, which helps Linux newcomers who cannot debug much
  • Refreshed in September 2026, with downloadable files and quick replies to questions

Cons

  • Repetitive in places, with passwords and IP addresses read out again and again
  • Thin on YAML files, domain registration and how tunnels actually work
  • Only 4.6 hours, and one reviewer felt left on their own at the end
Jason is probably my favorite instructor. Very practical lessons and no BS or fluff.

Truly beginner friendly. The requirements ask only for basic computer skills and a willingness to copy commands.

Very good course! I have learned a lot of useful technologies regarding self-hosting, such as tailscale, tsdproxy, the home page dash board or getting a domain, which gives me the foundations of adding any service i need. My next step is to install nextcloud, or maybe an opensource email server. Although I would like to mention one thing that it can be improved, and that's why I score it with 4 stars. I t believe that it was a little bit tedious sometimes because many things were repeated over and over again, like reading the password or the tailscale IP or domain. Also some times explaining very basic things, like what is URL, which I believe that someone who takes this course I believe that should know them. I would prefer that in a way like explaining to a friend, which you already know the knowledge level of that person.

Jason's communication skills is very clear, easy to understand and follow. No hidden concepts or 'I should have known' surprises. Enjoying Jason's course. I am walking through this course with Jason's book as well. Together they help me when I lose my berrings as I did with Filebrowser. Thru that session, the video eventually stayed in buffering after several back-and-forth action by me and I could nolonger view that section of the course. No problems with the following sections. Both the book and the video course are very well presented by Jason. Excellent job and corse.

This is a great beginners course but needs to be updated as TSDProxy did not work for me, as of Jan 2026. I simply ignored that section after spending two hours trying to that docker image to work. I think that project is abandoned.

By Nick Matthews on 1/4/2026

This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Before starting this course I had already began my self-hosting journey. I stumbled through setting up some dockers and tailscale on my NAS. What I was having trouble grasping was how to setup the TLS certificates for the services and this course covered that plus a lot more! Some have noted that the repetition bothered them, but I thought it was a great way to solidify the skills learned in the course. Thank you!

By Syed Hasan on 11/30/2025

The course is really helpful. I was wandering around to properly configure my self hosted things with DNS, but none of the videos or GPT results were helping my just according to my need. But this course gave me the right knowledge and experience that I was lacking. I would recommend this course to any self-hoster.

By faris P M on 11/8/2025

course was very good and detailed. for future reference, i find that, adding a section, where how to configure with cloudflare where static ip is available. like a cloud vps. making hosted web apps public, while maintaining apps like portainer private on tailnet to manage hosting. how to make it secure also.

By Edyta Nowak on 10/17/2025

Jason, thank you. The transition from proprietary apps to self-hosting my own was so much smoother because of that course. I used to come back to your videos often but recently I finally created some docs to have an easy reference when I set up a new server, so I can put this course to rest, haha. I keep enrolling to your other courses and always find valuable takeaways!

By Nontas Papadopoulos on 9/25/2025

The course was great. It would be really helpful if we could also have an example for finding and installing a new service. As mentioned yml files need configuration and it is difficult if you don't have experience with docker. apart from that I think it helped me to begin the journey of self hosting.

By Pryce Hurley on 9/17/2025

Not enough detail, especially about registering a domain. Tunnels are not fully explained, and the rest of the course could be more detailed and less repetitive. No alternatives were discussed in detail.

By Nzume Enang on 7/25/2025

This course was exactly what I needed to kickstart my self-hosting journey.Jason Cannon guides you step by step in setting up self-hosting in an approachable way. The hands-on examples, especially with Tailscale, Portainer, and publishing services to your own domain, were super practical and easy to follow. I have been looking for ways to publish services without using port forwarding. If you're curious about hosting your own services, this course gives you the tools and confidence to do it. Definitely 5 stars from me
