Broderick Wong

Broderick Wong's artistic journey started in Manila with a degree in Marketing from De La Salle University. He found himself deep in Learning and Development as a Management Trainer and while he liked what he did, it wasn't what he loved. In 2009, he left his job to pursue art by enrolling in a basic 3D animation and multimedia course. Eight thousand hours and 1 demo reel later, he abandoned it. Although it was art, there was still something missing. Between 2010 and 2014, he specialized in black and white, graphite Character Portraits.

In 2015, he had discovered watercolors. His journey started with teaching himself the basics. When he reached a decent enough level, he took a few workshops (5 to this date) to enhance his knowledge and skills as a painter.  In that process, he had discovered so much about himself, about life and who he was as an artist.

His impressionistic style of watercolors have not only been shown in group exhibitions in Metro Vancouver but in Italy at the 2019 Fabriano in Acquarello International Exhibition  as one of the representing artists for Canada (where his painting was further juried into the Fabriano Watercolor Museum) and 2020 Fabriano in Acquarello International Conference as international artist under the Italy Group and demonstrated a painting for the on line demonstration portion of the festival.

I love that this course talks about common problems and possible causes early on, a lot of books don't really talk about that and it's hard do know what to do when you get stuck otherwise. I am only part way through the course but already getting a lot out of it

The demonstration was helpful to see how to do EVERYTHING wrong in order to see my mistakes. *Sometimes it is good to see "wrong" in order to see "right" more clearly. This demonstration exercise is another example of Broderick's skill and care in designing his classes. I have found his style of teaching very helpful.

I was totally unaware I was a patchy painter til this class proved it. You can tell Broderick puts a lot of intention and hard work into each course he creates to make those Broderick signature classes that we love. Always full of cool soundtracks, visuals, subtle and not so subtle verbal/ visual/ aural jokes and mad skills to evolve our watercolor world, while presented in a very user-friendly way. He’s an entertaining instructor, gifted watercolorist and all around fun/kind human being. If you get a chance to talk with him…it’s a real treat because he’s a deep listener and knows the volleyball game of good conversation. It shows in his paintings too. This course has been a game changer for the watercolor skills of both my daughter and me.

Vielen herzlichen Dank.

I'm a (badly) self-taught watercolorist. I'd mastered (to my satisfaction) the graduated wash essential for skies and sunsets but never considered a flat wash. I hadn't seen the need for it. If you want to paint illustrations for children's books this course is for you. Could have done without the background muzak myself, but each to his own. If you want to master the flat watercolor wash, an excellent course.

This is my third course with Broderick. At first I was like, “what’s up with all of these animations?” But now I’m just constantly amazed by his skill, not only as an artist, but also as a teacher. All of his lessons are super thoughtful, intentional, and … well … fun. I’ve learned to love those goofy animations. Plus, I’m learning how to watercolor from knowing nothing to knowing really important foundational techniques…to learning impressive artistic methods. I’m so, so glad I’ve found Broderick Wong’s watercolor lessons. Thank you!

It's great that you cover important steps that other's pass over. Like using a clean brush to add color. especially for keeping light colors like yellow clean. And like how much water use, how to actually mix paint, and how to control the bead by wiping the brush on the palette. And getting clean edges with the point or swipe of the belly. It gives me confidence to know when I'm doing something right, or to understand when I'm doing something wrong. So many other artists on YouTube just let you watch them paint without explaining what they are doing, or why.

I’m already a fan of Broderick Wong videos (Beginner, Intermediate Watercolour videos on Udemy) and this new one also deserves to be on every aspiring watercolour artist;s “must download” list. As always, Broderick offers a step-by-step, easy-to-understand, and fun approach to some very useful watercolour painting techniques. I especially appreciated the materials list (one page visual) and more detailed instructions on transferring templates. The opportunity to watch a “bad” painting (of spider) is a great teaching tool! (Especially since I committed several of those same mistakes!). I’m only at the beginning of this course but am looking forward to all the learnings that lay ahead! Honestly, having already completed a couple of Broderick’s video courses, I wouldn’t hesitate to encourage others to download this course. The price is very reasonable and you LEARN lots of great tips and techniques, which is bound to translate into better watercolour paintings — and that’s really the goal. Thank you Broderick and good luck to all current and future students!

Although I am no longer an absolute beginner (I have already bought all of Broderick's previous courses) I have not regretted buying and working through this beginner's course. It's always good to repeat and deepen the basics. And I have learned something new and have taken away the incentive to work more with large brushes. What I particularly appreciate about Broderick's courses is that they are very well structured and build on each other logically. Broderick has thought of every aspect, every possible question is answered in advance. And if not, he is always there to help and encourage. I can only recommend this course.

By Anne Watman on 11/5/2023

Now that I’ve completed all of the exercises, I can say, once again, that Broderick has delivered another top-notch watercolor course. I have all of five of his courses, and I could happily recommend any and all of them. I started with Broderick’s courses two years ago, and I have a lot more experience under my belt now. However, this course is still challenging, and it gives beginners as well as more advanced artists a great opportunity to learn, test, and relearn some important skills. Learning how to mix colors is an important skill, and so is understanding how to get the right strength. And, learning how to create a flat wash that is not patchy is a must-have skill for any watercolor artist! I also find Broderick to be very engaging as an instructor. He knows how to explain and demonstrate watercolor painting in ways that are easy to understand (plus, I enjoy his sense of humor)! Even if you’re just curious about watercolor, and want to see if it’s for you, this is a great way to find out. Just remember to be patient, practice, and ask questions when you need help. It’s all there for you!
