Course Description
I'd say that he is a patient teacher and a very effective communicator. He is also organized and gets to the point so you have more time to learn. He is also funny which makes the class more fun. Time just flew by because he showed passion in his art and it was obvious when he taught. - Suzie Ang
Have you always wanted to paint a landscape scene?
Landscape painting can be seen as
taking small, individual activities
and putting them together into one complete painting.
Now how do we put it all together?
The big secret to painting landscapes
is not how much you need to know,
but what you need to know, first
and I'm here to teach you.
WHO AM I?
Hey there! Broderick here and I paint in watercolor professionally,
from simple character designs, to realism, to fun art, even fine art pieces hanging in Museums in Europe.
I’ve been a featured artist for a major art supply chain (Youtube: “urban sketching broderick wong”)
Social media loves my quirky watercolor pet portraits (Google: “vancouver is awesome broderick wong”)
Placed first in live watercolor painting competitions (2016 Harmony Festival Plein Air Champion ; 2018 Grand Prix Plein Air Masters Division Champion)
The Fabriano InAcquarello 2020, an international watercolor painting conference hosted in Italy,
invited me to do an online painting demonstration as an international artist. (Google: "inarte fabriano 2020 brod wong”)
I’m also the creator of two popular and highly rated watercolor courses here on Udemy, including my best-selling Watercolor Painting for Beginners.
In this course, I'll show you how to put together a complete scene using the basic techniques, properly.
WHY LEARN FROM ME?
When I felt I knew enough, I wanted to paint EVERYTHING, from landscapes to animals, to portraits and urban scenes, but I quickly realized that with every 1 step I took forward, I took 4 steps back. It was such a strange, unusual experience that made me rethink how I had been painting. I ruined many watercolor paintings trying to paint in a different style. I experienced many happy accidents but didn’t know how to recreate them successfully. I persevered and took a handful of workshops and, over a brief period, I realized that there are levels to watercolors!
Fast forward to today, if I could have kick-started a path to success for myself to follow, to learn watercolor painting quicker without making so many mistakes, what would that look like? Through my experience in teaching myself and others, I have found the one thing that unlocks the full potential of watercolors and it is with this awareness that I present to you:
Watercolor Painting Landscapes For Beginners
Broderick's personality to teach made the learning enjoyable. It was not about how good he was an artist but how we can achieve what he was showing us to accomplish a finished painting. The technique was simple, easy to follow and not hard to comprehend. Broderick is inspirational and "YES" Watercolour Essentials is the WAY TO GO!!! - April Lee

WHO IS THIS FOR?
If you're comfortable with the basic rules of watercolor, or if you've taken both my foundational courses, Watercolor Painting for Beginners and Watercolor Painting for Beginners Techniques and Effects,
then this is for you.
READY TO PAINT DIFFERENTLY AND DIVE INTO SOMETHING NEW?

THE PROBLEMS WITH LEARNING
Now there can be a long list of rules theories and concepts to know and study and there are courses out there that either give too much technical information without relevant exercises, or they don't tell or show you enough and you still have to figure it out on your own.
I will share with you my secret, I will teach you how to "see", like an artist first.
I have found the most critical piece of learning for you to start with. This is the foundation that I believe you need to know first, before knowing everything else. Think of a cube, with velcro attached to all sides. Any piece of information you continue to learn after, will “stick” with you longer, because you will have a strong point of reference that you can
You will learn the 4 zones to help you know what to paint first, what to paint next, and what to paint last
in a landscape scene.
Then, I'll show you how to apply the basics , differently to create the illusion of depth and distance, glassy watery reflections, or a multi-colored sky,
You will learn how to mix different color combinations, with only a few colors.
You will be painting 4 different scenes, each representing the 4 seasons: painting a winter, spring, summer, and an autumn
You will learn how I paint thin, fine lines to create tree branches
This course includes everything that I teach in my live Wet On Wet workshops, ($260 total value) If you’ve taken different watercolor painting courses before but still have a hard time putting all your learning together into one complete painting, my Watercolor Painting Landscapes For Beginners course can help.
1) SHORT LASER-FOCUSED LESSONS
My live watercolor painting workshops have given me the opportunity to target and isolate very specific challenges about the painting process,
from a learner’s point of view, and then break them down into short laser-focused lessons.
I found that these challenges are multi-layered and overlapping,
making it difficult to know where to begin.
This is why you may feel you’re taking 1 step forward and 4 steps back.
My Watercolor Painting Landscapes For Beginners course peels away those layers,
then simplifies them into short focused lessons,
allowing you to learn only what you need to know at that time, to get you to the next level.
Succeeding lessons will have their own short, focused sessions that gradually build on top of the previous.
2) LEARN WITHOUT THE INFORMATION OVERLOAD
● I’ve distilled traditional art theory & practice into their fundamental essence
● I use easy to understand language (aka no artsy fartsy terminologies)

Broderick Wong
Broderick Wong's artistic journey started in Manila with a degree in Marketing from De La Salle University. He found himself deep in Learning and Development as a Management Trainer and while he liked what he did, it wasn't what he loved. In 2009, he left his job to pursue art by enrolling in a basic 3D animation and multimedia course. Eight thousand hours and 1 demo reel later, he abandoned it. Although it was art, there was still something missing. Between 2010 and 2014, he specialized in black and white, graphite Character Portraits.
In 2015, he had discovered watercolors. His journey started with teaching himself the basics. When he reached a decent enough level, he took a few workshops (5 to this date) to enhance his knowledge and skills as a painter. In that process, he had discovered so much about himself, about life and who he was as an artist.
His impressionistic style of watercolors have not only been shown in group exhibitions in Metro Vancouver but in Italy at the 2019 Fabriano in Acquarello International Exhibition as one of the representing artists for Canada (where his painting was further juried into the Fabriano Watercolor Museum) and 2020 Fabriano in Acquarello International Conference as international artist under the Italy Group and demonstrated a painting for the on line demonstration portion of the festival.

I love it! This course looks so simple, but it's not! All the techniques I am learning in these simple, playful designs are ones I'll be able to use when I begin composing my own pictures. The instructor adds in all sorts of tips and tricks to his basic material. Sometimes I feel discouraged, because my paintings are terrible. Then, I remember these are exercises, and not paintings I'm meant to share with anyone and I feel better. This course is readying me for painting things I can share. Five stars and more!

Seems pretty good so far, but I'm going to have to pick up masking fluid Masking fluid is wonderful Broderick has so many good painting lessons. For the first time I'm actually pleased with my results GO SLOW! ENJOY THE PROCESS Now that I've completed the course I have some suggestions: Please get rid of the music! I'd rather sit in the quiet and watch you work than have mindless sound in the background The templates that you're painting on are too light. Particularly in the Spring scene, I just couldn't follow the lines. Still, loved the course, and will take more with you! Thanks

Not sure! I have dabbled in other courses that have their strengths as well. My wish would have been to have done Broderick's courses first and then move on to the 'more' technical and scientific one by Jill Poyerd's next. I could have used Broderick careful demonstrations and building of skills progressively earlier on.... I did try too many different things with some disappointment without appropriate experience Broderick coaches one along on....

While I did not master all the techniques, I did learn a lot. The color mixing is still a bit difficult as is continuous washes. During the course, a couple times my template didn't quite match what Broderick's sketch was showing, in fact leaving out the shadows on mine and while I am learning to wing it, I found it a bit disconcerting while painting. Also the templates print out very light and since I use a light box I had to figure out how to darken them on my computer before printing. I would prefer to see the complete painting before we even start, and knowing what we are going to paint before even starting the course would be nice. Still can't find the squirrel in the last ;)

My favorite watercolor instructor! I didn’t think I’d be interested in landscape painting, but it’s turning out to be one of my favorites. I will add that, for me, all of his tutorials are challenging. However, I’ve learned A LOT! They’re worth owning because even if you aren’t happy with your initial results, you can always go back and try again. I’ve done that several times now, and that’s when I see my progress.

This course is generally is generally engaging and well-organized. I'm taking a break (and leaving a placeholder rating of 4.5 stars) after completing lessons winter through summer. This is partly out of frustration with the otter landscape lesson. I'm on board with the instructor's step-by-step approach and use of templates so we can focus on techniques, but if a step is skipped, or the template doesn't correspond to the instructor's painting, it's very noticeable. For example, it's sometimes difficult to match colors across lessons and cuts, and I assume this is to an extent unavoidable. But if a puddle is blue at the beginning of a lesson when it is mixed, it needs to be blue 30 seconds later (not "blue-green") when it's time to paint.

Once again, Broderick has led me further toward successful watercolor painting with easy to access principles and enjoyable applications. I've learned how to determine what parts of a landscape to paint first, then next...etc. I've also practiced the principles from his first two excellent courses. They're clear enough so that I can apply these to my own subjects. And again, the production value is excellent. I'm a follower!

Such a great course! I'm a big fan of Broderick's teaching style, so this is already my third course with him! :) This class teaches new ways to apply the techniques we covered in the first two courses, so it's a great way to keep practicing and learning new skills! I like how the course teaches you to "see" like an artist and makes it easy to paint landscapes step-by-step. Plus, the animals are too cute for words!

The intro got me enthused already - which is a very auspicious start. As always, you serve up a coherent and engaging tutorial that builds on what you've taught us before. I do appreciate that we can use whatever paints we have and we don't have to follow yours, but I'd like a bit of an explanation on why you chose the paints you use and what qualities they have that makes them suitable for the purpose. Thank you again, and I'm looking forward to whatever you have for us next.

This is the third course offered by Broderick that I have taken on Udemy and, once again, I am happy with my decision to take his course. In this well-designed course, Broderick has created some cute animal subjects to make the landscape paintings more fun to paint. I love Broderick's palette and the story he has interpreted in each one of his paintings. I also found it's easier to practice the basic and essential watercolor techniques on these charming illustrated style of paintings, and I can more easily produce a much fresher and cleaner look for my paintings as well. What a great course!! .
