Course Description

Have you ever tried “painting flowers before but ended up with

  • Mud

  • Billions of brush strokes

  • Stiff-looking stems or

  • Petals that look overworked and tired

Would you believe that painting different kinds of flowers, botanicals or foliage can be done using a combination of only 2 essential techniques?

They sure do!

Watercolors can flow and drip, blend and bleed, all of which can make painting flowers, effortless. What that means is, you apply the paint and let the water do the rest. You just need to let the water and color, paint the painting with you, and I'm here to show you how!

WHO AM I?

Hey there! Broderick here and I paint in watercolor professionally, from simple character designs to realism, to fun art, even fine art pieces hanging in Museums in Europe.

  • I’ve been a featured artist for a major art supply chain (Youtube: “urban sketching broderick wong”)

  • Social media loves my quirky watercolor pet portraits (Google: “Vancouver is awesome broderick wong”)

  • Placed first in live painting competitions (2016 Harmony Festival Plein Air Champion; 2018 Grand Prix Plein Air Masters Division Champion)

  • The Fabriano InAcquarello 2020, an international watercolor painting conference hosted in Italy, invited me to do an online painting demonstration as an international artist. (Google: "inarte fabriano 2020 brod wong”)

  • I've led live watercolor painting workshops for people who have never picked up a brush before

  • I'm also the creator of 3 highly popular watercolor courses here on Udemy, including the Bestseller Watercolor Painting for Beginners

WHY LEARN FROM ME?

There are watercolor painting classes out there that use up hours on soul-crushing lectures and theory before putting brush to paper and when you finally do, it's all about repetitive drills, forgettable color chart and swatch exercises, demoralizing activities that are too mediocre or too complex, random techniques without understanding why, leaving you with so much playing, experimenting, and accidents, but still not knowing how to properly apply the knowledge in a practical way.

I'm here to show you that learning doesn't have to be mind-numbing.

Seriously. You just need the right guidance.

1) SHORT LASER-FOCUSED LESSONS

In this course, you will start with simple activities to equip you with 2 essential flower-power techniques, taking time to apply them properly on simpler subjects first.

2) SEQUENTIAL LEARNING

Then, you will learn how to combine these techniques with the fundamentals:

  • Creating the illusion of volume and depth without painting every single petal

  • Describe dimension through subtle folds and wrinkles

  • Learn how to blend colors to create soft marks and exploding patterns

  • Create flowing lines of stems and veins using brush techniques

New lessons introduce new techniques & reinforce what you learned in previous lessons. Lessons include carefully designed activities to match the skill level. Lessons are concise but packed with only relevant information

3) PROCESS-ORIENTED VS. RESULTS-ORIENTED

My style of teaching is process-based, meaning, you will walk away with proper technique and application so you can paint your own flowers after. You will not be limited to painting just the flowers in the activities. This is why I refer to it as Flower Power Techniques, techniques you can use to paint your own projects!

4) NOT YOUR TYPICAL, TRADITIONAL COURSE

My live watercolor painting workshops have given me the opportunity to target and isolate very specific challenges about the painting process, from a learner’s point of view, and then break them down into short laser-focused lessons.I found that these challenges are multi-layered and overlapping, making it difficult to know where to begin.

This is why you may feel you’re taking 2 steps forward and 4 steps back.

My Watercolor Painting Flowers (and all my other courses) peel away those layers, then simplifies them into short focused lessons, allowing you to learn only what you need to know at that time, to get you to the next level. Succeeding lessons will have their own short, focused sessions that gradually build on top of the previous.

This course includes everything that I teach in my $260 live workshops and more!

It's jam-packed with extra tips, full commentary, clear instructions, and step-by-step guidance. You will get access to additional learning
through other student works, responses to questions, and, did I mention, you don't need to know how to draw?

I've also prepared a special lesson that integrates everything, complete with background, subtle texture, light, and shadow making your painting pop!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

If you already know the fundamentals of Wet on Dry and Wet on Wet painting, but don't want to spend 1-hour painting ...1 petal, or if you want to paint different types of flowers where you paint as you learn right away, instead of sitting through, lengthy, boring lectures presenting more challenges before you paint, then Watercolor Painting Flowers is for you!

Are you an Absolute Beginner?

If you are looking for a new hobby, or maybe you’ve gathered a collection of watercolor supplies but haven't found the time or courage to paint or maybe you’re looking for a break from other more career goal-oriented courses, I would recommend taking my Watercolor Painting for Beginners first.

Are you an "On and Off" Painter?

As long as you are comfortable with Wet on Dry and Wet on Wet applications, then this is for you. But, if You've tried watercolor and find it difficult to control, you may need a refresher on watercolor or maybe you need direction because you seem to choose the wrong and complicated things to paint.

  • Do you appreciate hearing what artists think as they paint?

  • Do you find painting the same thing over and over boring and tiresome?

  • Do you appreciate some background information about watercolor and a progressive build-up of technique and application?

If you feel you need more guidance with Wet on Dry painting, my Watercolor Painting For Beginners is a good place to start. If you've got a good handle on Wet on Dry but always wanted to learn the secrets to Wet on Wet painting, then Watercolor Painting For Beginner Techniques and Effects is what you need to learn first.

Broderick Wong

Broderick Wong's artistic journey started in Manila with a degree in Marketing from De La Salle University. He found himself deep in Learning and Development as a Management Trainer and while he liked what he did, it wasn't what he loved. In 2009, he left his job to pursue art by enrolling in a basic 3D animation and multimedia course. Eight thousand hours and 1 demo reel later, he abandoned it. Although it was art, there was still something missing. Between 2010 and 2014, he specialized in black and white, graphite Character Portraits.

In 2015, he had discovered watercolors. His journey started with teaching himself the basics. When he reached a decent enough level, he took a few workshops (5 to this date) to enhance his knowledge and skills as a painter.  In that process, he had discovered so much about himself, about life and who he was as an artist.

His impressionistic style of watercolors have not only been shown in group exhibitions in Metro Vancouver but in Italy at the 2019 Fabriano in Acquarello International Exhibition  as one of the representing artists for Canada (where his painting was further juried into the Fabriano Watercolor Museum) and 2020 Fabriano in Acquarello International Conference as international artist under the Italy Group and demonstrated a painting for the on line demonstration portion of the festival.

since its a beginners course ,concepts are explained in a very simple way which are easy to comprehend and accordingly easy to follow in our own work. Up until now I am satisfied with the course. I now have rchd the course halfway and I am super excited to go ahead and learn more. The course offers so much to learn with simplicity to keep you engaged.Iam happy till now.

I have taken a ton of water painting courses on this app and by far yours are my favorite. I wish we painted a little less cartoony and a little more serious artist stuff. landscape, seascape, flowers. A little more loosely but still using the skills we learn painting the cute artwork. I enjoy painting the projects in this coarse . I would just like to use my newly acquired skills on something else, but still with Broderick. Love his teaching style.

The course was fine. I think the exercises were useful. I’ve lowered the rating because of the almost constant “selling” of other courses that he’s done – it was extremely annoying. There must be at least 40 instances where he brought up his other courses. There was also a place toward the end where he bragged about “giving” students an extra flower tutorial that he could’ve charge for separately. I don’t know why he found it necessary to do all that. I do not know that it’s going to make people get the extra courses; for me, it guaranteed that I would not. It was really off putting though, seriously

What a well-organized and charming course from Broderick again. The subjects and topics designed for this course are very appealing and fascinating as well. I have been learning watercolor for a while, but still, I can find a lot of essentials to learn from him. And, as he advised, I started to learn to focus on the painting process only, but not to strive for perfection in my exercises. In this way, doing the exercises is just like pleasant healing to me. Now, I hope he would add a fine art course in landscapes later soon.

Its as brilliant as usual. Amazing quality, good teaching, guided clearly and lead you to your own stunning result. But I would say its my least favorite course compare to the beginner one and wet on wet. Though its good to practice more, I expected new knowledge and didn'tget it much here. (Just a higher expectation) . Also didn't like the first flower and was postponed to start it. Again, that is just personal preferences and fuss. The course is decent. Thank you.

This course is much more difficult than I expected. I found painting a rose without a template a little frustrating as my roses still look like blobs. It’s going to take more practice than I anticipated. Still a very useful course and well done. After finishing the entire course I felt I learned a lot and know which lessons to review to improve. Broderick is an excellent teacher-I just purchased his landscape course.

Incredible instructor, he makes lessons fun by having you paint real things instead of giving formal lessons. This helps you get the basics down without doing tedious exercises. In addition, the video production quality is very high, taking this course feels like I am watching something on PBS/television. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to get better at watercolor painting, esp. for beginners

By Donna Vasquez on 10/18/2021

This was one of my favorite courses out of all of them. The roses were very challenging. Still haven’t got those right yet but will practice. I love his progress not perfection he tells us over and over. If he hadn’t I might have quit by now. I’m painting things I never thought I could. Love his approach to lessons and that I can go back as much I I want to redo a lesson. I think now I’ve completed this one I’ll go back and redo some I wasn’t so happy with.

Just finished the course - it's so good!! I love how it starts out simple and builds up in complexity. I found this gradual approach to be a great way up to brush up on my skills (pun intended) That's also helpful if you're new to painting or feeling a bit rusty, so you can just enjoy painting without getting overwhelmed. The tutorials were easy to follow and I learned some really helpful techniques I can use for painting other flowers. PS. Thanks for the bonus lesson, that was really generous!

Excited to take this course - after completing Mr. Wong's other courses and taking courses from different lecturers, I really appreciate his presentation style. I'm vexed, though, that the strengths aren't universally known. It's such a concise, handy way to figure out how much water you need.
