Course Description

If you are looking for an engaging, fun and informative course, I would highly encourage you to sign up for this one! Broderick's teaching style is engaging, easy to follow and fun! I began painting in April 2020 after enrolling in a mixed media course on Udemy and fell in love with watercolors and inks. Since then, I've participated in several in-person workshops and other online classes/academies, and recently decided to give Udemy another go for watercolor painting. I found Broderick's Watercolor for Beginner's class and after watching the intro video I was hooked! About halfway through the beginner's course, I found this Next Level course and immediately enrolled. Both have been phenomenal and I am really enjoying his teaching and artistic style  - Tiffany White

Do you want to take your painting to the next level?

The secret ingredient to improving the way you paint is

MORE water!

Did you know that the same water you use to mix your paints with can be used as another tool in your watercolor toolbox?

Using more water when your paint, can give your work a more organic look, with very little effort.

You just need to set up the right conditions then, let the water do what it wants, and I'm here to show you how!

WHO AM I?

Hey there! Broderick here and I paint in watercolor professionally,

from simple character designs, to realism, to fun art, even fine art pieces hanging in Museums in Europe.

  • I’ve been a featured artist for a major art supply chain

  • Social media loves my quirky watercolor pet portraits

  • Placed first in live watercolor painting competitions (2016 Harmony Festival Plein Air Champion ; 2018 Grand Prix Plein Air Masters Division Champion)

  • The Fabriano InAcquarello 2020, an international watercolor painting conference hosted in Italy,

invited me to do an online painting demonstration as an international artist.

  • I’m also the creator of Watercolors for beginners here on Udemy, a best seller course taken by over 9,000 people with over 400 reviews.

Now I’m excited to show you how to take your watercolors and rise to the next level!

WHY LEARN FROM ME?

When I felt I knew enough, I wanted to paint everything, from landscapes to animals, to portraits and urban scenes, but I quickly realized that every step I took forward, I took 4 steps back. It was such a strange, unusual experience which made me rethink how I had been painting.

I ruined many watercolor paintings trying to paint in a different style. I experienced many happy accidents, but didn’t know how to recreate them successfully. I persevered and took a handful of workshops and, over a brief period, I realized that there are levels to watercolors!

Fast forward to today, if I could have kick-started a path to success for myself to follow, to learn watercolor painting quicker without making so many mistakes, what would that look like? Through my experience in teaching myself and others, I have found the one thing that unlocks the full potential of watercolors and it is with this awareness that I present to you:

Watercolor Painting: Next Level Techniques and Water Effects

I really enjoyed the beginners course, and this one just takes off where the other left off. Already in the very first lesson I am learning something. I really enjoy this instructor's courses, its fun and informative, and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in painting with watercolors. Schantel Fick

WHO IS THIS FOR?

If you're comfortable with the basic rules of watercolor, then you're going to have fun breaking these rules

and have the confidence to produce different effects that can't be achieved knowing the basics alone.

READY TO PAINT DIFFERENTLY AND DIVE INTO SOMETHING NEW?

THE PROBLEMS WITH LEARNING

There are lots of materials that some would use, from salts to soaps, stamps to cellophane, from wax to markers, to metallic paints and colored pencils. While they can be used to produce different effects they can:

  • Be quite costly to buy

  • Affect the longevity of your painting

  • Take up so much space on your table

  • May compromise your development of proper technique and application

MY SOLUTIONS TO LEARNING

If I showed you an easier way to achieve more with less, using only water, does that sound good?

You will learn special applications I developed that will help you control your water, then let go of that control, allowing the water to paint the painting with you. This gives your painting that fresh, fluid, “just painted” look even long after its dried. Using no extraneous materials, only water.

My Watercolor Painting: Next Level Techniques and Water Effects course is all about painting Wet On Wet. What is Wet On Wet? Have a look at one the free preview videos to get a better idea of how to put the W.O.W. (Wet On Wet) in your paintings!

  • You will learn the difference between Wet on Dry and W.O.W. painting

  • There will be 4 new W.O.W. techniques, that you can look forward to, allowing you to control your water and let go of that control, to let the water paint the painting with you

  • My 4 Phases of Wetness will teach you how to intuitively know to keep on painting or when to stop

  • This course includes everything that I teach in my live Wet On Wet workshops, ($260 total value)

  • Additional, bonus paint along videos to get more practice after the course

WHAT IS YOUR COURSE LIKE?

If you’ve taken different classes before but still have a hard time controlling watercolor or painting loose, my Watercolor Painting: Next Level Techniques and Water Effects course can help:

1) SHORT LASER-FOCUSED LESSONS

My live watercolor painting workshops have given me the opportunity to target and isolate very specific challenges about the painting process,

from a learner’s point of view, and then break them down into short laser-focused lessons.

I found that these challenges are multi-layered and overlapping,

making it difficult to know where to begin.

Broderick Wong

Broderick Wong's artistic journey started in Manila with a degree in Marketing from De La Salle University. He found himself deep in Learning and Development as a Management Trainer and while he liked what he did, it wasn't what he loved. In 2009, he left his job to pursue art by enrolling in a basic 3D animation and multimedia course. Eight thousand hours and 1 demo reel later, he abandoned it. Although it was art, there was still something missing. Between 2010 and 2014, he specialized in black and white, graphite Character Portraits.

In 2015, he had discovered watercolors. His journey started with teaching himself the basics. When he reached a decent enough level, he took a few workshops (5 to this date) to enhance his knowledge and skills as a painter.  In that process, he had discovered so much about himself, about life and who he was as an artist.

His impressionistic style of watercolors have not only been shown in group exhibitions in Metro Vancouver but in Italy at the 2019 Fabriano in Acquarello International Exhibition  as one of the representing artists for Canada (where his painting was further juried into the Fabriano Watercolor Museum) and 2020 Fabriano in Acquarello International Conference as international artist under the Italy Group and demonstrated a painting for the on line demonstration portion of the festival.

Visual demonstrations are good. Very easy to follow for anybody interested in exploring watercolor. Have not completed course but, in my opinion, this is beginner friendly. Hopefully toward end of course, there is something challenging for intermediate and advanced watercolorists. However, always good to go back to basics, regardless of your skill level.

The course was great! Starting water olor on my own was frustrating. The simplicity of the course was calming. This is the third course of Broderick's I have taken and am impressed with his videography skills and the ability to teach to an audience of newbies. Only reason I did not give a full 5 is because the videos kept pausing. This has never happened on any of my other udemedy courses. Could have been on this end, not sure.

Thank you for the course. It has been very helpful but despite using the cotton paper that you recommended I had a lot of trouble with the paper buckling which often made my paintings a bit of a disappointment. I have learned a bit about using water but keen to get used to it so that I am a bit more confident. Barbara

This course was a great match for me! I loved every moment of it. Broderick is a very patient instructor who makes every lecture easy to understand. I took my time and did all the activities several times, getting more proficient each time. I am very satisfied with this course and look forward to taking all of the courses offered by Broderick.

I have tried to learn wet on wet different ways, but this course was the most enjoyable and effective in the shortest time. The techniques are taught in a simple and accessible way. I was amazed by the paintings I was able to produce so quickly! Broderick is a very good teacher - he is engaging and positive. There is clearly a lot of effort in the course: for example, the effects and animation help make it more engaging. My only criticism is I wish it were longer, but at the same time I know can redo these exercises to get more practice.

I think Broderick is an amazing teacher, I cannot recommend this course enough as well as the Wet on Dry Beginners course. I ❤️ his method so much that I have purchased all of this 4 courses and am part way through the third one. There are many courses out there I have tried but nothing compares to these ones. I do hope he makes some more courses by the time I finish the last course!!! Thankyou Broderick for this awesome experience.️

When I was brand new to watercolor, I took Broderick's first course with a similar name, and it gave me a solid foundation in essential wet-on-dry skills. A year later, I'm mostly working with tutorials and just starting to create original paintings, but I use those skills all the time. I thought this course was a lot weaker. It is still worthwhile, but I didn't learn as much, I was frustrated pretty often, and I didn't have as much fun. Here's why: 1) It only covers one application of wet-on-wet The entire course is about using WOW to create tie-dyed effects inside a solid shape. That's fun, but it's only a small part of what WOW can do, and IMO, not as useful as other ways to use WOW. I think using wet-on-wet to create soft-edged shapes is more important to know as you grow as a painter. Obviously, that's going to depend on your personal style and what you want to paint, but in the tutorials and books I've used over the past year, soft edges show up a LOT: trees, clouds, fur, etc. Tie-dyed effects inside a shape are used too, but not nearly as much. 2) I didn't like the projects The projects in Broderick's first course were fun, super cute, and even gift-worthy for kids or adults who appreciate the cartoony style. This course's projects didn't have as much personality, and I thought the color combinations were ugly. I also didn't learn anything by doing the projects that I didn't learn during the practice exercises in section 5. (I already had wet-on-wet experience, though, so if you're brand new to WOW, you might get more out of it than I did.) In the first course, the projects included new tips, tricks, and tidbits, but that wasn't the case here. I am always up for repetition for the sake of improvement, but working on projects that I didn't like without learning anything new took a lot of the joy out of the process. I felt like I was just going through the motions. 3) Less detail, and missing crucial cues Like Broderick's first course, this one does a great job of explaining the concepts in the instructional sections. Unlike the first course, though, he doesn't explain very much during the project demos. He rarely explained WHY he was using a particular technique or placing color in a particular place. From my previous experience, I could sometimes tell that he was doing that to create form, shadow, or defined edges, but he only occasionally said so. I would have learned more from the projects if he had called that out. He also gave fewer cues to help the viewer notice when he changed brushes, changed colors, switched from paint to water, or mixed two colors on the palette. I'd estimate that he gave a voice-over or on-screen text cue at most 1 in 3 times. If you blink or focus on the paint on the paper (instead of the brush) for half a second, you can easily miss it. This made following along while painting especially difficult - you can't watch his brush and your own paper at the same time! Since WOW painting is super time-sensitive, rewinding 30 seconds in the Udemy app while your paint dries is not ideal. I watched every video in full before attempting the projects myself, so I found this super frustrating. I have produced instructional videos myself, and I know that it takes a heroic amount of editing to achieve this level of production quality. I just wish he had spent more of that time on cuing rather than cool but unnecessary visual effects. Overall, I would recommend this course to two types of people: 1) Tie-dye effect fans If you really like that look, and think you will use that technique a lot, you'll get a lot out of this course. Buy it now! 2) If you're not fully comfortable with wet-on-wet (AND it's on sale) Understanding the difference between domed and drenched has been HUGELY helpful for me, and I think that lesson alone made this course worth buying on sale. I'd recommend that you work through sections 1-5 (materials, concepts, practice applications), and then skim the rest of the projects and paint them only if you like them or want more practice. For either group: feel free to change the colors if you don't like them. Unlike the first course, the color choices aren't relevant to the technique being covered, so you can swap in any color with similar values (light/dark).

Absolute joy to paint using his classes. I couldn’t do anything when I started and he has me do things I never thought I could. I ever had a family member ask for one of the paintings to frame and hang up in her house. I want so happy with my progress but them asking for my painting reminded me of him saying not perfection but progress. Love it,

Mr. Wong, this course, as well as the one for beginners, are really excellent. The explanations are clear and concise and you include a lot of practice from easier to more difficult. I felt I improved and I have new tools to continue. I am waiting for more courses as it is a pleasure to follow your instructions and make practice pleasant. Thank you!

This course segues nicely from the beginner course. Very informative, and well edited, although I would've liked brighter colours (it's so gloomy outside already!) and more instruction on different ways of utilising the w.o.w method. Using a spray bottle on the piece, for example, or adding gravity to the mix. That said, I enjoyed the course very much. Kudos to the instructor!
