FAQ

- Do I need to be a Software Architect to take this course?

Absolutely not! A Software Architect is just a title. In fact, many companies don't give this official title to anyone. Most Software Architecture and System Design is done by trusted engineers within the organization. To get this trust from your managers, you need to demonstrate a solid knowledge of Software Architecture and System Design. This is exactly what you will learn in this course.

- What is the importance of Software Architecture, and why do I need to learn it?

Modern software development of large-scale systems is very complex. Typically, it involves many months of work by multiple software engineers. Just like no one would attempt to build a skyscraper without a solid plan and architecture, taking on a big software project without proper design and an approved Software Architecture is inconceivable. If the Software Architecture of a system is done poorly, the project will likely fail. However, if the software architecture is done correctly, it can greatly impact many lives and help your organization grow and thrive.

- Is there any coding involved in the course?

No. Software Architecture is part of the design phase of a large-scale system. Coding is done only when the Software Architecture is finalized. It definitely takes a certain mental leap to realize that coding is only a small part of software engineering. And if the Software Architecture and the design is done correctly, the coding task and everything that comes after it can be very easy and straightforward. On the other hand, if the Software Architecture is not done correctly, the implementation phase can become a big challenge.

- Should any Software Engineer aspire to become a Software Architect?

Yes and No. As you gain more experience, you will be expected to do more Software Architecture and Design. The role of a Senior Software Engineer in most organizations requires Software Architecture skills, even if your role does not have the "Software Architect" in it. Additionally, even if you want to keep coding, your code will always have to take the overall Software Architecture into account. Otherwise, it will not be as effective. However, if you do decide to pursue the role of a Software Architect,  you will be rewarded with greater responsibility and impact, which generally comes with higher job satisfaction, job security, and higher pay.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course and got a lot of value out of it. That said, I'd like to share a few points of constructive feedback: 1. Course content needs updating - some of the approaches and practices covered feel outdated and don't fully reflect current industry standards. 2. Tests are fairly shallow - the testing sections felt superficial and weren't very well designed. More depth here would make the course more practical. 3. More architectural approaches would help - the course could benefit from covering a wider range of architectural patterns and styles, not just the ones currently included. 4. Missing section on migration patterns - it would be great to have even a brief section covering patterns for migrating from one architecture to another, since this is a common real-world challenge. Despite these points, I found the course genuinely useful and would recommend it - just with the hope that these areas get improved in future updates.

It has been an eye-opener in certain contexts. I recognised chronic issues that we faced in a previous job and missing links that could have helped the situation quite clearly. I think this course helped broaden the sense of how something can be achieved by providing alternatives and solutions to different use cases. The only improvement that I can think of is if the course also provided the intro to specific projects and allowed for placing building blocks and parts of such a system together in a way to construct the architectural diagram themselves. Then it could provide one or two samples of highly-performant, scalable, fault-tolerant, highly available and durable design for such a system. That could be a follow-up excercise on the last lecture for instance. I am very new to Software Architecture and think that this has been an excellent introduction.

Very thorough beginner's overview of software architecture fundamentals. Structured, university-style lecture course with very little filler, which I personally appreciated. A few terms here and there were introduced with little to no prior introduction, and course notes were mostly a slides printout, but that wasn't an issue for me. Overall, it did a good job at explaining how systems work together, and the examples at the end did a good job putting everything together.

This course was an excellent learning experience and significantly broadened my perspective on software engineering. It shifted my focus from implementation and tech stacks to designing scalable, well-engineered solutions. After completing the course, I approach problems with a much stronger engineering mindset, considering architecture, trade-offs, and long-term system design. It has been a valuable step in my growth as a software engineer.

The course covers a lot of ground, but the delivery leans heavily theoretical and can feel generic in places. I didn't come away feeling like I have learned a ton of genuinely new material. That said, it did a good job introducing practical patterns like CQRS, event sourcing, and lambda architecture that are directly applicable to real world projects. The slides were well organized and the lectures precise, but the overall experience felt more mechanical than organically engaging, without the kind of hands on or story driven approach that makes concepts really stick.

Excellent course—I learned about several concepts and terms I wasn’t familiar with, such as load balancer, GSLB, and many others. Not to mention database strategies that I had a general understanding of, but without any real technical depth. Plus, the course is taught in English at a very moderate pace and is easy to understand for non-fluent speakers like me.

This is an amazing course. I learned a lot from it, and one thing I really want to share is this: if you are a software engineer with 1–3 years of experience and you want to unlock the next level in your career, this course is highly recommended. It does not just teach normal theory or surface-level concepts. It helps you understand what real engineering looks like, how senior engineers think, and how to approach systems in a more professional way. If you want to move beyond basic development and start thinking at a higher engineering level, this course can really help you make that jump. I highly recommend it.

Very helpful in understanding the foundation of software architecture and design. I have worked on maintenance and enhancement of Mainframes systems which were designed and developed 30-40 years ago. I never got an opportunity to build a system or an application from scratch. As I'm upskilling and learning to design and new build applications, this course helped me a lot in getting a good understanding of the foundation of Software architecture and design and know where and how to start the process. Thank you!

By Roman Minenok on 6/22/2026

It's a good foundation I think, but the course is missing real life examples aside from two ones in the final chapter. They instantly break the illusion that we probably know System Design by the end of the course as knowing isolated bits and ability to combing them into a working system following existing patterns is the main challenge. Therefore, I think those real-life examples should make up half of the course content, rather than just being the final chapter.

This was an excellent training session. The instructor explained all topics very clearly and supported them with practical, real-world examples, which made understanding the concepts much easier and faster. The resources shared were extremely useful as well. I would give this session a 5/5 and look forward to attending many more sessions by this instructor.
