Course Description

Object Oriented Design principles, SOLID, either you love them or hate them. However, they are the crucial building blocks of your software's architecture. Unfortunately, as useful as they are, most of the material available  on this subject is either too abstract or use impractical examples. Now, they do help in understanding these principles conceptually, but they lack the depth and understanding as how and where these principles can benefit you the most.

Well, in this course, I will walk you through these principles step by step. I have structured the course in such a way that by the end of it, not only you will have completely understood these mystical concepts but also you will be ready to apply them in your projects straight away. I will also show you how  these principles can rescue you from the darkness of messy code by giving you practical examples.

In addition to that, I will also show you a few tips and tricks along the way in Laravel and a gentle introduction to testing.

My web development journey kicked off when a friend of mine needed some help with his website. I still remember the pain that I went through while trying to change text and some images. However, I was completely mesmerised by the whole notion of instructing web browser to do as how i would instruct it .

It was around 2008 when i decided to pursue web development as a career. In contrast to lot of great self taught programmers, I took the traditional route of going to university and did my B.Sc ( Hons ) in Applied Computing. Since then I have never looked back and have only moved forward.

Programming and any thing web related is my passion and I have put endless hours in  acquiring the required theoretical and practical knowledge to get where I am.

My goal is to sum up the knowledge I have acquired over the years; break it down and teach others in simple English, hoping that some body out there might find it beneficial.

I have seen explanations and other courses before, but this one explained it all much better through more realistic practice examples. TDD is a huge plus.

I would say that this course was Okay! The examples were Okay, though here and there they ming were a bit too detailed? Okay. For my taste there was too much focus on writing tests, thought writing tests is alway Okay. Ali explained the key points of the SOLID principles though, so I think this part was Okay. All in all the whole course was Okay (if you get my drift).

Enough good, nice explanations about SOLID. But it still contains a lot of useless information. In first section a lot of time on tests, etc. Also code in first section doesn't follow best practices. So if you are going to show some tips, and "how to", please do for all aspects, do not ignore some important rules.

In general, Ali's explanation of the Solid Principle is super! The examples he uses to support each stage of the principles make the course very useful. The code base would worth a PHP and Laravel update because it uses php 7 with Laravel 5.8 which is quite outdated as the current versions are PHP 8.4 Laravel 11, and the commit messages are a bit confusing in the middle of the course but except these small problems the course is really useful and helped a lot in the clarification of the principle. Thanks Ali.

Too basic, and too Laravel-centric. The SOLID principles are explained and demonstrated in a very basic manner, and not entirely accurate. This is way too basic to be an intermediate level course, except that the use of Laravel and TDD makes it too complicated for absolute beginners, so it's hardly useful unless you are just transitioning from beginner to intermediate or using Laravel... then it would actually be very useful and I would recommend. The overall structure of the course is good but the presentation needs to be improved (inconsistencies in naming, code style, presentation). Pure PHP without frameworks would benefit this course, and you could put more learning into half the time with better examples. Please don't take this too negatively, with a little streamlining I think this could be a very good course.

Absolutely amazing course, I really enjoyed that the projects were all small and easy to understand. I recommend this course to anyone that want to level up their skills and really understand the SOLID principles. why and when to use them.

Satisfied customer. I think the key points were described and you get a good overview and vibe for what the SOLID OOP principles are and why they are important. You also come away with a better understanding of how to structure your OOP class definitions to make your code less brittle and more flexible and open to change down the road. CONS: I think the code implementations simply took too long to cover. A revised and much more concise description of the code implementation would be better. I came away thinking the Liskov Substitution principle was not covered correctly. I did not come away thinking I had the correct understanding of that particular subject.

An amazing course for anyone who really needs to improve their skill on the topic. Every aspect is well explained and clearly understood. I feel extremely satisfied that the time spent plus the token paid is more than worthwhile

By Alex Turkevych on 8/21/2021

The realistic walkthroughs were very clean and valuable. The Coding Exercises could have been better constructed and delivered. After correctly finishing the first exercise, I clicked the solution tab to compare my work. When I arrived at the second exercise, the solution was presented by default. I found this very confusing because the brief was already satisfied. I also didn't like the typos in the starter code ("constructs", "arrray"). And I didn't like the native function sleep() being used as a pre-named method. Overall, I would recommend this course to a friend/colleague.

By John Degey on 11/23/2020

Generally pleasant to follow. Laravel centric, I prefer plain vanilla PHP. If you don't know Laravel and it's magic behind the scene... Becomes shorter in explanations towards the end : only 19min for the DIP compare to 3 times more for the SRP... I found that the principle of using differents git branches was cool, but could be better (some files are missing in the ocp_start I remember, one exercise start at the solution screen...) Better if you already read some doc about the solid principles but if not, this will be a good starting point.
