Spring Boot 4: Learn Spring 7, Spring Core, Spring REST, Spring Security, JPA, Hibernate, Swagger, Spring MVC, MySQL

Our take

Based on the ratings of 95,333 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Chad Darby's long-running Spring Boot and Hibernate course, the most enrolled one on Udemy with about 466,000 students and over 95,000 reviews. It was updated in July 2026 for Spring Boot 4 and Spring 7. The syllabus runs 419 lectures over roughly 35 hours and works through REST CRUD APIs, REST and MVC security, Spring Data JPA, Thymeleaf, advanced JPA mappings and AOP, all wired to MySQL. The stated level is all levels, but basic Java is required. It suits developers who want to type every line themselves in IntelliJ rather than read finished code.

Reviewers praise the structure: short videos that explain one idea and then code it, and nothing feels daunting. Several call it the best Spring course they have taken, one saying across all platforms, and the teaching gets called detailed, encouraging and easy to follow. The complaints are consistent. The pace is slow and repetitive, with separate videos for tiny changes and whole projects retyped from scratch when a section adds Thymeleaf on top of earlier code. One two star review says that despite the length it never goes very deep, and a three star review objected to plaintext database passwords being shown at all.

Value is strong given the sheer amount of material, and the ratings back that up: about 61 percent of reviews are five star and fewer than 1,600 out of 95,000 are one or two star. Next to the microservices course beside it, this is the broad foundation, not the specialist follow-up. Watch at higher speed and skip the project backup videos, as one three star reviewer did, and it is an easy recommendation for anyone starting Spring.

Best forJava developers who know the basics and want to build REST APIs, MVC apps and JPA CRUD from scratch, one small step at a time.
Skip it ifYou already ship Spring apps and want depth on microservices or framework internals rather than a slow, repetitive walkthrough.

Pros

  • Updated July 2026 for Spring Boot 4 and Spring 7, so the code matches current releases
  • Short videos that explain one idea and then code it, which reviewers say keeps 35 hours from feeling daunting
  • Seven type-along projects across REST, Spring Data JPA, Spring Data REST, MVC and security
  • Downloadable source code and PDFs, plus the instructor promises answers within 24 hours

Cons

  • Slow and repetitive pace; one reviewer skipped more than half of it, and projects get retyped from scratch
  • Broad rather than deep, with no quizzes or coding exercises to test yourself
  • One reviewer objected to plaintext database passwords being shown at all
It covers so much but never becomes daunting or overwhelming. The videos are a perfect length and format, providing insight into a topic and then straight into coding it.
Richard Dallman, a student

Listed as all levels, but it assumes you can already write basic Java; some HTML helps for the MVC and Thymeleaf sections.

Sample of the reviews:

Best Spring Boot course by far across all learning platforms for me. Best course structure and instructor always demonstrates in depth knowledge by covering the necessary basics. Really really incredible good presentation and structure, a lot of other instructors can learn a lot from you Chad. - Muzi P.

I worked in some company, so I can say that this course is 100% industry oriented. The best course for learning Spring Framework. Getting replies within 24 hours. - Premang

I'm adding to my review following Chad's recent updates to his course to cover Spring Boot, JPA, etc. After finishing the course originally, I found another Spring Boot class, and after working on this other class, I appreciate more what Chad has done here. He's made Spring Boot for CRUD applications with Thymeleaf very easy to follow and learn. I've taken half a dozen other software courses, and while other instructors might be good, Chad is the gold standard here. I can't recommend him highly enough. - Dave Zeltserman

This is the best tutorial I've seen so far for Spring/Hibernate, each step is well explained and the tutorial videos are made to a high standard. I highly recommend this course! - Rob

Hats off to you Chad, the best Spring fundamentals course I have done on Udemy thus far. You never disappoint. - Morebodi Modise

I loved this course! It covers so much but never becomes daunting or overwhelming. The videos are a perfect length and format, providing insight into a topic and then straight into coding it. As soon as I finished it, I went to look at other courses Chad has because I enjoyed his way of teaching so much I wanted to see what else he had that would allow me to grow as a developer. I'd highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn the Spring framework, there's enough here for anyone to be learn something from and to go and apply in their own projects or at work!

By Omar Alaql on 9/1/2026

The course was really helpful and more than great, and I've spend a lot of hours with other mentors and more than one course where this course include it all... (of course there will be a BUT) but the thing that I hated about this course is using the commandLineRunner I would prefer to use the normal CRUD (service, controller...ect) rather than that complex method. I'm only regretting that I've didn't took this course earlier. Thanks so much Mr Darby (:

By Kevin on 8/25/2026

I think this is a really decent course. It covers most of the topics around Spring, and I like that the teaching mannerisms are not too difficult as well. They are well structured in order to give you full explanations about everything that's going on in the videos. I have seen some negative comments about a lot of the stuff being repetitive and that the course could be completed faster, and I agree. I think if you put around a solid 7 days into it, you can complete the course easily, maybe even sooner. But it being repetitive? I think this is a good thing, because a lot of programming skills come from repeating the same stuff over and over again. A lot of understanding comes from the same aspect. I have seen a lot of tutorials where some things are quickly mentioned and you simply don't remember or understand them. I also thought that the course was a bit slow-paced, but I fixed this by watching the videos at 1.25 or 1.5 times the speed. Trust me, better slower videos that you can speed up than faster videos where it is really hard to follow along. I just completed Tim Buchalka's Java Masterclass, and it was completely the opposite in his course. The videos were so sped up that it was extremely hard to follow along. Also, slowing down the videos does not work like speeding them up. If you slow videos down, it feels like the instructor is drunk, and this made the learning process even harder lol. So overall, this is a good course. The only main thing lacking here is a bunch of challenges and bigger projects to put all the knowledge from Spring together. There wasn't a single challenge here. I guess you can always pause the video and solve things on your own, but still, it's not the same as someone giving you instructions on what to do. So I would recommend Chad adding those in the future. Also, a huge thumbs up to Chad for being so positive and fun in his lectures. There is nothing worse than learning from somebody who sounds and acts like a corpse lol. Chad was the complete opposite of that. Alive, positive, energetic, cheerful, etc.

I was already quite familiar with many concepts included in the course and yet I learned new things and it was a great refresher. The course was very thorough and covered a broad range of topics. Some sections were quite repetitive though, especially with the MVC stuff as a lot it was just rewriting the same code from a previous section but now adding Thymeleaf on top of it. I think that could be shortened down perhaps with using a copy of a project from a previous section and then just focusing on adding the MVC stuff rather than typing everything from the beginning again. Overall really nice course and I gotta say "Good job my friend" back ;).

By Paul Soper on 7/7/2026

This course gives a full and complete understanding of Spring Framework and Spring Boot from a beginner to an expert. Chad is a great instructor who explains things very clearly and gives great guidance for the hands on work. I would recommend this course to anyone using or wanting to use Spring, even seasoned experts. Fantastic stuff!

By Anonymized User on 5/10/2026

I started learning SpringBoot as Beginner and 90% of the course is excellent and cleared with all topics with practical understanding. Felt difficulty on Advanced JPA section on relationships. Working with DB directly was easy but handling relationships with @Entity relationships I felt hard and could be explained more practical as owning side, Foreign key concepts are getting difficult to understand Would recommend this to everyone and overall awesome course

By William Owen on 5/6/2026

Mr. Darby has gone above and beyond to put this course together. I'm really glad to have him as an online instructor. He packs a lot of material in and does so in a controlled manner that is easy to follow. He has updated his videos in response from students, which shows that he is a real and welcoming online presence.

Amazing course content and amazing mentor. I really like that the content is up to date, meaning that I had 0 errors on the code presented in the course. Also the slides add a lot of value and give you a visual picture on how the logic works in the background. Having them available for download, that's a gem, really nice. I look forward on starting another course from Chad. "Good job, my friend" :)

By Govindraj Chavan on 2/20/2026
