Our take

Based on the ratings of 6,969 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short, free primer on the Eclipse IDE, not a Java course. Chad Darby packs installation, project setup, source code generation, refactoring, the debugger, JUnit tests, and importing and exporting projects into 18 lectures across six sections. The audience notes are blunt about it: this assumes real Java experience already. Anyone still learning the language should grab a Java course first and come back once the syntax is comfortable, then use this to get oriented in the tool.

Reviewers consistently call it clear and well paced, with several praising Darby's responsiveness in the Q&A section. Ricky Taing summed up the general mood: covered useful topics, easy to follow, not bloated. The complaints cluster in a few spots. More than one reviewer wanted downloadable code to follow along instead of just watching, a couple wished for keyboard shortcuts instead of menu clicks, and one review flagged the JUnit section as noticeably different from what they saw in their own install, a sign parts have aged.

At free, with just over an hour of content, there is little to lose by trying it, and a 4.6 rating across nearly 7,000 reviews backs up the general satisfaction. It sits in Software Development next to much longer, deeper courses like a full Python bootcamp, and it is not trying to compete on scope. Treat it as a fast orientation to the IDE rather than a substitute for a real curriculum, and on that narrow job it delivers.

Best forJava developers who know the language but need Eclipse basics fast.
Skip it ifYou want hands-on code files to follow along or a deep dive past the basics.

Pros

  • Free, and only about an hour of content start to finish
  • Covers install through debugging, refactoring, and JUnit tests in one course
  • Instructor Chad Darby gets consistent praise for clarity and pace
  • Reviewers say Darby is responsive to questions in the Q&A section

Cons

  • No downloadable code, so a couple of reviewers had nothing to follow along with
  • Assumes existing Java knowledge, so true beginners will be lost
  • One reviewer found the JUnit chapter noticeably dated compared to their install
Covered useful topics. Easy to follow and instructor was easy to understand. Not bloated.
Ricky Taing, a student

Listed as beginner level, but really suits Java coders who are beginners to Eclipse specifically, not to programming.

Some important interesting topics he goes over a little to quick; and, although it seems a little outdated (the j unit chapter is quite different from what I have here), I liked very much some tips.

By Ahmed Waleed on 3/28/2020

Well, at first I thought it has nothing useful to add ... just do not rate any course until you finish it. Only drawback: he never mentions the shortcut way only the formal way using menus and right clicks (which is good btw, shortcuts can always be obtained somewhere else).

Me parecio interesante puesto que es un IDE que proporciona toda su funcionalidad al frente de la plataforma de cliente enriquecido, a diferencia de otros entornos monolíticos donde las funcionalidades están todas incluidas, las necesite el usuario o no

By David Kelly on 12/4/2018

would have liked code to walk through in parallel, to mirror the instructors videos. Nice pleasant voice, with easy pace to work through...... Thank-you.

Short introductory course. And title says, this is course for beginners. Don't expect from it much. But in its niche, as short course for first acquaintance with IDE, it's very good. I would only wish a little more content. I rate the course at 4.5 stars and add 0.5 stars for responsiveness of the instructor. You can gain additional information from Q&A section.

By Nolan Jones on 5/8/2018

I completely enjoyed this course. The instructor gave detailed explanations while going through each section. The tone and speed in which he spoke lead to a good learning experience. The manner in which he explained everything spoke to his experience.

By Pedro Barragan Osorio on 4/13/2018

I found this course really helpful and enlightening once I have never used Eclipse IDE and here I found multiple tricks that are quite interesting and that I have multiple Ideas on how those can help me on the projects I'm currently working on, the way they are explained by instructor is really good, voice tone and cadence are great.

I waited to give my feedback till the end, but definitely 5-Stars from beginning to end. Chad has a wonderful attitude, very engaging, a passion for Java, and an incredible teacher. All information is accurate! I've learned lots of tips and tid-bits. I wish he had a Java for beginners to advanced course. I'll definitely take the Spring/Hibernate course :) Thanks Chad!

By Samantha Wallace on 2/7/2016

Just wanted to say thank you, one of the best courses how to use Ecilpse I have seen. If you are a beginner to coding in Java, using the the basic Window cmd screen can be frustrating and does not show you options on how to correct errors, unlike the Eclipse IDE. Chad is a great teacher. Highly recommend. Samantha W.

By Dheeru Mundluru on 9/22/2015

This is a very good introduction to Eclipse. It is short and very well organized. It will give all the basics necessary for one to quickly get started in using Eclipse. Chad is also very clear in the way he explains things. He is also very responsive & very helpful in the discussions area, which is what good instructors do. Thanks Chad!
