Course Description
Get started with Micro-controller Bootloader Development.
This course will be suitable for beginners in the domain of embedded systems and programming.
This course is all about learning to develop a custom BootLoader for ARM CORTEX Mx powered STM32Fx microcontroller.
In this course, I will guide you through a step-by-step procedures to develop your own BootLoader and we will explore many things related to BootLoader programming.
The BootLoader we are going to develop in this course will have the following features
1) It can do in-application programming(IAP). You can use the BootLoader to flash a given application binary
2) Read microcontroller-specific data
3) Flash related configurations like setting up read and write protections for different sectors
4) Flash sector erase
5) Mass erase of the user flash
6) Read and display the protection status of the flash memory
7) Jump to the specified address to execute the code
Along with custom BootLoader development, you will also understand
1) The different memory organization of a microcontroller
2) Memory aliasing and different boot modes of STM32
3) How MCU boots after power-up
4) Vector table mapping and vector table relocation use case of arm cortex mx processor.
5) Difference between In-system programming(ISP) and in-application programming(IAP)
6) Custom boot loader design flow chart
7) Host and Boot loader communication method
8) Implementation of different boot loader commands
You can also extend this BootLoader by giving the following features once you complete the course
1) Encrypt and Decrypt the firmware sent by the host using AES
2) Over-the-air programming by interfacing WIFI or Zigbee Modules
Hardware used in this course:
In this course, STM32F446RE Nucleo board is used.
If you have any other board based on the STM32 microcontroller then also you can use the codes developed in the course with no or minor changes.
Software used:
1) KEIL-MDK-5 for WINDOWS
2) OpenSTM32 SystemWorkbench for (WINDOWS/LINUX/MAC OS)

A highly informative course for embedded engineers. The step-by-step guidance helped me understand how a custom bootloader works internally. The practical examples and debugging sessions made it easy to follow along and implement the concepts on actual hardware.

Good introduction to bootloader topics. Ideally would have some extra modules regarding security, etc. I had some issues replicating this on another controller that gave me some interesting lessons, partly the user app having different clock settings required a clock system reset before jumping to user code. But overall, good first intro to embedded bootloaders.

In this course, a custom bootloader is created from scratch. The stm32 board already has a factory bootloader in the system memory (ROM) and this may give the impression that the bootloader created is not a real bootloader. It must be clarified that the bootloader created in this course is a custom bootloader and that the original cannot be replaced. Fundamental concepts of bootloader implementation are taught and practiced, as the course promises. Many FLASH operations are explored to configure and customize the bootloader. A host application is also provided for communicating and testing.

Very well explained and going deep well beyond what the course title describes, i really learned a lot! The only thing that makes this course 4 starts and not 5 is the duplication in code which is a bad practice that should at least be noted to avoid students repeating it, and that there are some differences between between the final code and some lessons that really confused me

Overall, the course met expectations. Section 12 is the most important part of the course. As mentioned by others, a lot of time is spent setting up software tools. I would suggest to focus on one software tool Keil and Python (Host Tool). The tools used in the course are soon becoming outdated. Therefore expect to spend some time securing the relevant version of the tool, or figuring out how to repurpose current software tools. Also it takes too long for responses to questions. Good course. I recommend the course to anyone who wants to learn about microcontroller bootloaders.

The course is very good for understanding the bootloader and custom bootloader. it covers also the debugging steps and how it is done it is better to have the basic information about microcontroller and embedded C before starting with the course.

This is a good course. I enjoyed doing this course like doing this practically on my Nucleo STM32F429ZI. I have enjoyed all the courses from Kiran so far. This tutorial is a bit simpler. Perhaps, it is simple because boot-loader job is nothing but to jump to an address. Another job is to write to the flash. It is a good course but I was expecting it to be a bit more detail and a bit more difficult. I will recommend this course to everyone though. You will learn what bootloader does . Believe me bootloader is a very important thing while we do embedded development. Kiran you are amazing.

I appreciate the sequential steps he makes to configure our custom bootloader, But I am really disappointed that he uses this many tools while we should implement all the stuff that the tools do by ourselves by configuring the linker scripts to create sections for the user app and implementing our own drivers to manipulate them and understand things deeper. I already do this but it would have been great if the implementation of all these stuff is understood deeply and applied manually not by using multiple software tools.

The perfect introduction to custom bootloader development. Kiran is a fantastic teacher whose methods work for many different types of learning styles. I have purchased all the courses by Fast Bit and they have had a profound impact on my work as a developing electrical/embedded engineer. The current courses available cover almost everything you need to know to carry out advanced embedded systems work. Thank you Kiran!

Good structure, well explained. Followed the course to implement my own system with two Nucleo Boards, one as Master (Host) and another as Slave, communicating on I2C. Had to adopt a lot of thing for my project, but the course helped a lot to understand how bootloader works and how this should be implemented
