Course Description

Your team's performance is your performance! Getting off to a good start is essential to team performance! This course will help you lead your team through the common stages from forming to performing, with less of the common "storming" as your team seeks a mature level of self-management.

When taking responsibility for a team a leader is faced with a basic challenge: forming a group of individuals into a unified and motivated team that can focus on performance and problem solving to improve business performance. Creating this unified effort, focused on measurable performance, and able to make decisions and take action in a timely manner is the challenge of every leader with a new team. This course is designed to present the essential skills and tasks that will achieve this goal. Lean or agile culture and organizations are built on the foundation of high performing teams. Leaders who succeed are those who have mastered the skills of coaching and developing thier teams to maturity.

The instructor has been leading teams and training teams for the past forty five years in dozens of Fortune 500 companies, as well as his own company. He  has worked with Honda, Honeywell, Shell Oil, Corning, and dozens of other leading companies. He is the author of ten books on teamwork, leadership and lean management.

Lawrence M. Miller

Larry Miller is now teaching eighteen courses with more than 400,000 students in 210 countries on Udemy.  He is the author of eleven books, and has more than forty years of experience consulting with major corporations on their business performance, culture and management systems. Several of his courses on management and leadership are best selling courses in their category and have been adopted by major corporations as part of their leadership development and lean culture implementation process.

His expertise is derived from hands on experience creating change in the culture of more than a hundred organizations. Among his consulting clients have been Honda, Corning, Shell Oil Company, Amoco and Texaco,  Air Canada,  Eastman Chemicals, Xerox, Harris Corporation,  Chick-fil-A, Merck and Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, United Technologies, Metropolitan Life and Landmark Communications.

He began his work in youth prisons after recognizing that the learning system in the organization had exactly the opposite of its intended effect – increasing, rather than decreasing, dysfunctional behavior. For four years he worked to redesign the prison system by establishing the first free- economy behind prison walls, where each inmate had to earn points, maintain a checking account, pay rent and pay for everything he desired. It resulted in measurable improvements in behavior. This was his first organizational transformation.

larry is one of the few who genuinely know how to communicate informational material in a legitimately engaging and meaningful way. all of his videos feel like conversational coaching from a mentor.

Yes, it was a very good match for me as a Unit Head and most of the lessons learnt are practical in our daily work activities. The way Lawrence delivers also makes understanding to the course contents much easier.

As a starting point for a new team lead this course has proven to be invaluable, it has made me aware of ideas and concepts that’s I will be exploring further and hope to bring in to my team.

The course was very helpful in showing how to build and improve a team. I really enjoyed how practical and well organized the content was, which made it easy to apply the ideas to real life situations. It also reinforced the importance of strong leadership, clear communication, and continuous improvement when working toward high performing teams. Overall, it was an excellent learning experience with valuable insights I can use in my day to day work.

The presentation of the different subtypes of teams and their role in the whole organization was a bit fast and therefore it was hard to understand how they differ. Especially I did not understand perfectly whether all teams are natural teams or only the management and core work teams. The term "natural work team" was missing on the overview diagram slide. But it was interesting to watch.

The presenter seems to be someone who's used to giving in-person presentations, which colours the style of delivery. There are a lot of anecdotes and rhetorical questions to engage with an in-person audience. However, on a digital platform, this seems unnecessary, and I wish he'd get to the point sooner.

It was very inspiring and to the point, enriched by many years of experience. I enjoyed it a lot and watched some sections twice.

By Diep Nguyen on 12/22/2025

It's really good to know all the concepts about how to build a high performance team. I hope I could see more videos relating to sharing the real experiences to apply for myself. Thank you for your videos
