How to Give Powerful and Effective Feedback - A Critical Human Resource Development Skill Required of All Managers

Our take
Based on the ratings of 15,734 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, focused course on one management skill. It runs about 70 minutes across 20 lectures in four sections: an introduction, the characteristics and values of great managers, guidelines for giving feedback, and a brief section on receiving it. Lawrence Miller, a consultant with forty years of work on corporate culture and management systems, does the teaching. It is aimed at managers and team leaders, and the only requirement is wanting to help team members improve. There are no quizzes or exercises, so it is a watch-and-reflect course.
Reviewers like how plain it is. Concise, commonsense, and simple and straight to the point each turn up in the praise, and one reviewer calls it a helpful refresher. The guidelines for giving feedback get singled out, and one reviewer who had read Miller's books liked how he explains things. The complaints are consistent too. Some wanted real-life examples and more depth, one found it dated and aimed at a broad American audience, and a Spanish-language reviewer said the graphics look many years old. One reviewer said a ten-minute YouTube video covers the same ground.
With 15,734 ratings averaging 4.6, mostly four and five stars, it is well liked. The course was last updated in February 2026, though the visuals still read as older to some. Treat it as a primer for new or rusty managers, not a skills workshop. Anyone who wants practice scenarios or scripts will need to add something else.
Pros
- Only 70 minutes over 20 short lectures, easy to finish in one sitting
- Gives a structured model for feedback, plus action plans and accountability
- Covers receiving feedback too, in its own section, not just giving it
- One reviewer calls Miller's explanations simple and straight to the point
Cons
- No quizzes or assignments, so applying the model is left to the viewer
- Some reviewers wanted real-life examples and more depth than the lectures give
- Graphics look dated, and one reviewer found the tone broad and very American
Great information. I like the way he explains things. Simple and straight to the point.

Course Description
Giving employees or team members feedback is an essential skill for every manager or team leader. If you do this well, your team members will perform well. Their success is your success. That is the purpose of this course.
Feedback should be a primary learning activity, welcomed as an opportunity for growth by the recipient. Unfortunately, very often feedback is viewed as punishment, a source of anxiety that inhibits one's ability to learn. The purpose of this course is to help you develop the skill of giving feedback in a way that reduces anxiety and maximizes the opportunity for learning and continuous improvement on the part of the individual.
This course is intended to be very concise and direct, focused solely on this important skill of both giving and receiving feedback.
"This is a fantastic course, as a refresher for someone like me, or for anyone new to the subject. It brought back many of the lessons I had forgotten. This is a vital skill for any manager, so take this course and gain the wisdom and knowledge that Larry has to offer. He shares everything you need to know. You won't be disappointed!" James Steele
"As a self employed person, my business rests on the way I interact with people. Lawrence's descriptions of common interpersonal problems which impact business (and personal lives) ring true. The course is well produced and thought through and the delivery is engaging." Eve Williams MMus
"Great and the focus early on about having courage to speak up and 'straight talk' is brilliant. Have courage people." Stefan Bard
"Miller's course provides positive perspectives and strategy on what many managers view as a difficult and sometimes unpleasant part of their job. Making feedback a positive component of employee development and improvement, and positioning it as a collaborative, data-driven process should help any manager with developing themselves and their team." Patrick Francis

Among his consulting clients have been Honda, Corning, Shell Oil Company, Amoco and Texaco, Air Canada, Eastman Chemicals, Xerox, Harris Corporation, Chick-fil-A, Merck and Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, United Technologies, Metropolitan Life and Landmark Communications.
He began his work in youth prisons after recognizing that the learning system in the organization had exactly the opposite of its intended effect – increasing, rather than decreasing, dysfunctional behavior. For four years he worked to redesign the prison system by establishing the first free- economy behind prison walls, where each inmate had to earn points, maintain a checking account, pay rent and pay for everything he desired. It resulted in measurable improvements in behavior. This was his first organizational transformation.

This was insightful in providing guidance and advice on how to provide and, most importantly, to receive feedback. I highly recommend

I enjoyed this course. It was concise and gave a commonsense approach to giving and receiving feedback. It also provided tools and guidance on how to improve on both fronts.
By Andreos Kaplanov on 6/29/2026
Felt like it was trying to target a very board audience (but also an American one), and also, even though much of feedback is ageless, felt somewhat outdated.

Buena información la que se comparte, solamente sería idal que se actualizaran los gráficos ya que da la impresión que son de hace muchos años.

I've learned that trust and confidence are the most essential consideration in giving feedback that is significantly resulting to a valuable feedback that you can receive in return.

Learning how important it is to give feedback as a manager to your subordinates. And no matter what you feel, you as a manager must guide, mold and lead your subordinates by giving them honest feedback.
By Sandy Chen on 1/1/2026
The explanations are very detailed, easy to understand. However, it is hard to retain long term as they are elaborate. It would help to have a summarized take-away in 2-3 slides for better long term memory retention and retrieval. Thank you.
