Course Description
Hey, you got promoted to manager! Congratulations! But... moving from an individual contributor role to a managerial one is more challenging than any engineering problem you may have faced. Managing people is a lot different from managing machines!
I'm Frank Kane, and I'm here to help you through it. I made the transition from software engineer, to manager, and ultimately senior manager at Amazon's headquarters in Seattle. And I did it while maintaining the highest review ratings and low team turnover in a very challenging environment. There's a lot about management I had to learn the hard way, but I'm going to share those tips for success - with you - in this course.
At this end of this course, you'll be driving results with your team that are much bigger than what you could have achieved yourself. And you'll know the most common pitfalls for new technical managers, and how to avoid them. In short, you'll be set up for success as you move from managing machines to managing people.
This course covers:
The most important survival tips for new managers
How to deliver results from your new team
The basics of people management nobody taught you
Hiring the best people for your team, and letting go of those who are holding your team back.
Working effectively with upper management
How to build and maintain morale on your team to keep it productive
Tips on growing your own career in management over time
I designed this course for engineers or technicians moving into their first management role, but early-career managers will also benefit from these tips. Or, maybe you're just considering making the move from individual contributor to manager, and want to know what you're getting into - this course can help with that, too.
This course is full of practical tips and activities; we don't mince words or waste time on empty business-speak. Choose to maximize your chance of becoming a great manager - enroll now, or check out the free preview lectures to see if this course is for you.

This is a fantastic Course! On a honest note, I took it thinking I am going to learn some political stuffs, but real management is a lot more robust and Frank really shares the best Insights I need. Since my transition to Senior, I noticed a lot of patterns which Frank already addresses it in this course. Thank you Frank!

Excellent course and tips from Frank. The core section containing the survival tips for the new technical manager is valuable. "Think strategically, act tactically", loved the way you explained this and its importance for manager.

Good tips on various issue new managers may face and the course is simple and effective.

As a newer manager, the information is quite helpful. Some of it is redundant and already known, but there are still good tips that can be quite helpful beyond the information itself. For example, the to do list approach to emails and setting up meetings to help with time management. And the flow chart for handling new emails. They give new perspective to how to manage emails.

I gained insights into several areas I had not previously considered thinking as a manager, such as proactively strategising communication ahead of senior management meetings and adopting a broader perspective beyond the team to better understand overall business objectives.

A highly recommended course for engineers transitioning into technical management roles. It provides practical tools and clear examples that help validate good practices while offering useful tips for handling everyday team situations. I found it very valuable for reflecting on my approach and gaining new perspectives on leading more effectively.

It was good match for me this course, acting as a refresher for some topics that I already knew and applied. It's great to have a course like this one, to reminder you whenever is needed, to return to the basics of surviving as a technical manager.

It's cool to see just how many of these values and ways of operating are embodied by my own manager. I look forward to implementing the ones I'm falling short on as I grow in my own new management role. I'm halfway through now and addressing difficult conversations and 1:1 meetings in this course is really helpful. You're right, the people managing part is my challenge as a team lead in engineering.
