The Complete Developers Guide to MongoDB (Udemy.com)

I recently completed the Master MongoDB and Mongoose Design course via Infosys Springboard, and it proved to be an incredibly effective deep dive into the NoSQL ecosystem. If you are working within a Node.js environment and want to move beyond basic database tutorials, this is the course to take. Here are my main takeaways from the course: The Test-Driven Approach: The standout feature of this course is its reliance on Test-Driven Development (TDD). Writing tests (using Mocha) around Mongo queries before building out the rest of the application ensures your database logic is bulletproof. It’s a highly practical skill that translates immediately to real-world, production-level projects. Deep Dive into MongooseJS: Rather than just skimming the surface of how to connect to a database, the course thoroughly breaks down the Mongoose library. You learn not just how to write queries, but the underlying purpose of Mongoose's core functions, validation techniques, and how to write highly efficient data reads. NoSQL Schema Architecture: Designing schemas in NoSQL is completely different from SQL, and the course tackles this head-on. The breakdown of when to use data nesting (resource embedding) versus lookups (record associations) cleared up a lot of the ambiguity that comes with designing scalable NoSQL databases. Instructor Style: Stephen Grider is excellent at demystifying complex concepts. The pacing of the course is spot-on, and providing the source code for each lecture makes it easy to stay on track without getting bogged down in syntax errors.

Funny I get tricked into enrol in this course some years back, then realized I dont have the javascript background to do this course, as the course throw me in the deep end by starting with Promise. Now that I know javascript, several years later, I pick up where I left off. As I am half way through the course, I think its fair to say that its all about Mongoose. And this is kind of a mild shock at this unique approach: we can almost totally ignore mongoDB, completely ignoring NoSQL, completely ignore mongo Atlas, dont even worry about what it is and how it stores your data, and just focus on mongoose model and schema and you will be ok. Strange thing with section 10 and 11, weird I have no idea what database I am connecting to, I didnt see any mongoose connection, what is inside the database, and bang the video shows that it can query and search artists already in the database. I didnt create any artists, I didnt import any artists, so I dont know where these artists came from. My guess is this might be cut and paste from Stephen's other courses. Or we have a whole section missing. But its still weird in earlier section we have popup warning us changes to ES6, like .remove is now .deleteOne or deleteMany, but in section 10 it seems we no longer has this kind of popup warning and is going back to pre ES6. Also strange didnt mongoose and min/max operator why we bother to sort to find out min and max. But its ok I will learn something then in Section 12 hopefully we get back on the right track on the last big 3 hours project. I think the 3 hours Section 12 is really important, I intend to use it as the foundation on which I can based on to understand other more lengthy courses on nodeJS, which I often easily lost track due to the lengthy 20-40 hours course content, and all the mixtures of DOM, html, css etc, and probably a couple of layers of code consolidation that makes learning harder. Lets see. Tell you what, there are 3 short projects in this course. I am slightly puzzle at this approach. Now that I have almost finishing the whole course, I aim to rerun the course in 3 prongs attack, 3 projects in parallel, just to compare and see why we are doing it this way. There seem to be repetitiveness yet different, some seems harder, some easier, but its all about databse CRUD so I didnt quite get it why it is so different. Like in one project I was told dont do find by ID then delete, and in another project I am shown findbyidAndDelete. May be I have missed something. But in general I think it is something like this: 1. mongoose without Express; 2. mongoose with something (may be React/Redux I am not sure); two collections: artist and album. 3. mongoose with Express; single collection.

Good course but a little bit outdated. It definitely needs an update.
If you are familiar with MongoDB and Mongoose it wouldn't be difficult to adjust the code to the newer standards of the packages. But if you are, then you probably won't learn a lot of new stuff.
I think I expected something more from the course. I'm familiar with many Stephen courses and every one of them were just amazing. This was just fine but I think the time I spent on this course was valuable too.

As usual, Steven Grider gives us a course that is both compelling and informative. Perfect for anyone who needs to get started with MongoDB and Mongoose.

overall great course. covered major topics in a real-world scenario. Provided good foundations for exploring the world of mongoDB in a professional way. Thanks Stephen.

I expected to learn Mongo from total beginner, with every tiny detail. This is exacltly what I got, so very satisfied.

1) some of the code is out of date (I know this from the deprecation messages that return instead of certain tests passing)
2) no one answers back in the Q/A, nor from an email whenever I had questions
3) I'm not sure of how I will be able to apply the knowledge that I'm gaining in a real app.

While the course was mostly good it is 4, or more, years old and it shows. MongoDB and Mongoose have both moved on and several of the functions demonstrated are either now deprecated or, in the case of geoNear in the last module, no longer supported.

Content and Theroy is usefull and explained in an easy way

Claims to have been updated in September 2020, but all the videos are straight out of 2017. The instructor uses programs that don't even exist anymore (Robomongo) and videos have NOT been updated to deal with deprecation (e.g., the need to add useNewUrlParser: true and useUnifiedTopology: true to the mongoose.connect method. Most questions go unanswered, even when they are relevant and an answer would benefit other viewers. I regret buying this course and am disappointed in Udemy for claiming this was recently updated.
