Nathan Glover

Creator of ALL things AWESOME!

Bachelor of Technology with a Major in Computer Systems and Networking, I've always had a strong desire to make amazing things with the technical skill I learn.

I've recently taken up developing Ethereum Smart contracts using the Solidity programming language and have deployed a number of small successful distributed applications (DApps).

When I'm not writing distributed and immutable code, I'm usually soldering electronics and writing code for some of my IoT home automation projects, and also working on Unity3D game development.

Course is a little dated using an older version of Flutter. Although the cloud functions were interesting, this would be been better as a bonus chapter, personally I would have preferred to figure out how the updates work with flutter and firebase in a more standard form which I will not need to research. I enjoyed the course, the presenter was easy to follow and understand.

I've learned a lot so far about Dart and Flutter, enough that I could start making my way through the official documentation and understand what's going on! That's exactly what I was hoping for from this course. Thank you!

I might have to take part 3 of this course again as I do not fully understand everything. Apart from that, he is a little bit too fast in coding and did not explain much while coding. I wish he could just be more detailed in explaining and code a little slower at times. But apart from the above, he is a great teacher and I'm sure he's a nice person too.

I don't like the Devopstar screen at the beginning of each lecture. Once would have been fine but every time? It breaks the flow and rhythm of the lecture. Nathan's coding skills are amazing. Maybe speak slower and explain in more detail what complex classes do. Also, I feel that the Firebase integration with the Node.js stuff needed more explanation as how everything works together. Otherwise it was very cool.

I liked the first 4 sections of the course overall. However, I find that as a "Complete" Flutter and Firebase course, the instructor left a lot to be desired. Pros:- 1. Good method of delivery 2. Good use of slides 3. The way the instructor explains the basics and "some" aspects of the technology is really straight forward and not at all hard to understand. 4. Practical course with follow along programming Cons: 1. Missed functionalities 2. Some important details glanced over 3. Copy - pasting of code 4. Promoting wrong programming practices for beginners. DETAILED REVIEW: - For a Beginner programmer: Good to begin with. But a beginner's lack of understanding of all modules/feature/elements of flutter will start to kick them in the brain halfway in the lecture when the instructor starts just glancing over important parts which have not yet been discussed when they teach you the basics and all you see is a section of code suddenly inserted in the lecture and is then the instructor simply explains casually about what it does and upon hearing the usability you realize you don't know what those features are, what are the other use cases and/or ways to implement them, and what all purposes each of those features fulfill. For an Intermediate programmer: You'll find the glancing over things somewhat useful at times but would feel the need to be explained the important functionalities a bit more in detail. For an advanced programmer: You'll notice the above mentioned issues for others in this course but mostly you'll feel a sense of unease at the fundamentals of programming (especially teaching related) being ignored. For example: 1. Programming 101 - Commenting is VERY important (teaching beginners to do away with them is really bad) 2. Copy pasting code isn't a good thing to do especially if you are teaching people what a programming language can do.

Great course, that covers the basics of Flutter into some of the more intermediate/advanced features. Instructor was great and you could tell he really knows Flutter well. When I ran into an issue they were quick to respond and point me in the right direction. Great for anyone who is looking to learn more about Flutter and especially if you are interested in integrating it with Firebase.

THE GOOD The course started off great! It gives you step-by-step guides and clearly explained each step starting from the basics (e.g. Stateful vs Stateless, data types, privacy etc.). I can see that both of the apps have real world applications and the integration with firebase is wonderful because it they will be publishable & scalable apps. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENTS However, when you get to the section on infinite scrolling - it seemed that the curve became very steep from then on and there was a lot of presumed knowledge. It felt a bit like a how-to-draw books that I had on how to draw a horse: 1. Draw a small circle 2. Draw a big circle for the body 3. Add shading and the rest 4. *Picture of an amazing unicorn galloping through fields of gold* I believe the best courses are ones introduces concepts incrementally with something at the end that puts all of the concepts together. While there were some of that in this course, you'll probably struggle if you haven't got some experience in app development. I found myself just typing along during the CatBox App without real understanding of what is happening on certain parts, which meant I was not really learning. There were just too many new things introduced at once. VERDICT It's good, but I wished a lot of more basic concepts (e.g. how/when to use different types of Widgets, the syntaxes) were explained like what was done in the beginning. Also, consider including incremental exercises that challenges the students to apply the concepts themselves.

Great course, on building a real world app in Flutter, instructor is well versed in Dart and Flutter with added bonus of learning how to integrate an app with firestore cloud database. Although Tutor has a thorough understanding and a very personable approach, it would help if he could explain some of the Flutter and Dart concepts with a little more detail, e.g. when to use 'final' or 'widget.myInstanceVar' etc. because it seems final has slightly different uses to those in Java or php and why, although not an issue in this course the use of async & futures with UI widgets can cause timing errors if the data hasn't returned in time, while the UI widgets are building, I solved my problem using FutureBuilder pattern to only render when the data is available ref https://flutter.io/cookbook/networking/fetch-data/

Nathan creates two simple apps (at the moment I took the course) and even though he goes through the whole process, there is no theoretical explanations on the key topics, leaving the learning of Dart core concepts (like state management, etc. ) and Firebase (database rules, etc.) on your side. It would be great if the author continues to add other real-world apps and also some demos to explain the core concepts (state management, navigators, using remote apis without a plugin, etc.) Summing it up, it's a great starting point, but not for total beginners.

This is everything I was looking for. Having come from a background of programming within Visual Basic and in my early days using Gamemaker as a development tool. Having done this course it is definitely what I personally wanted to look into and help expand my knowledge
