Course Description

Take your app to the next level with the only fully in depth and comprehensive look at Apple's new framework for 3D development available on the web!

SceneKit is a framework that allows native developers on iOS to engage users in a totally new way using the elusive and often times intimidating 3D environment on mobile platforms. SceneKit allows developers the much needed access to 3D development that has so far been totally missing form the native world of mobile development, without having to use or learn an an entirely separate and external development software like Unity or Unreal Engine. Scene Kit makes it easy for the developers looking to get an edge over the competition to develop in 3D space. It is a powerful framework that has a lot to offer and can be applied to almost any sort of application.

3D is not just for games! By learning to use Scene Kit developers can also develop applications that use a 3D interface and push their apps to new heights by creating immersive experiences for the user.

In this course we cover all the basics of working with SceneKit and then go into all the essentials of SceneKit in detail recreating popular elements of some of today's biggest apps!

We include all the models and source code for this class! Afraid you won't have the 3D assets or know-how to start this course? Do not worry! As we have created all the essential 3D assets for you and included them along with the course and the source code for every step so you are never lost!

Skip the fluff and get to the main topic! This is a course that understands that you are here to learn SceneKit and will not take hours and hours of talking about irrelevant information. We get right to the point and tell you what you need to know quickly. We intentionally made this course low on fluff because you need this information, and you need it quickly! We've seen courses before that had all the information but spent hours and hours talking about things not relevant to the topic so we said we are not going to be one of those courses taking a firm stand for information now!

No course is as detailed or covers as many topics in SceneKit as this course does! If you are looking to get your hands on SceneKit and be among some of the very first developers able to take on this amazing framework then this is the course for you! It is the missing guide for SceneKit that will let you understand the power of SceneKit and allows you to learn every thing you need to in order to start developing your own apps from scratch in 3D!

Join the Comprehensive Guide to Scene Kit and you will be amazed at how easy it is to get started on the next great app!

Goog course for learning the basics but actualy outdated with the last section/minigame who doesnt work properly... But its ok for the price I think, I improved my skills on SceneKit anyway

By Bill Bob on 5/2/2022

The information is solid and still useful with some small changes. My biggest obstacle is the waste of screen space. You should in the future collapse the side navigators and use a larger font. A few programming errors/changes as the categories even though int need to be incremented by binary equilivents ex 1,2,4,8,16. Scaling the image doesn't scale the physics so you need to create a shape for the physics body.

I feel the writer of this course did an overall good job but I found a few things missing. Explanation as to why he chose a particular magic number as oppose to just blindly write values and magic functions without much explanation made it harder to understand. Also certain properties were set on particular objects that require people to google while he could have went over each one briefly just to explain what each one is in laymans terms to save the listener time. The stuff that I find to be very important and was missing to make this course "comprehensive": 1) missing explanation of .dae format and how certain models are made and exported into .dae something we as developers should know to tell asset designers how to create assets and scenes to be used. 2) I would have found an actual character animation quite useful. Different states (idle, walk, attack etc) to cover how to rigging works within scenekit. The course only covers static objects with the plane propeller exception 3) HUD design was not really addressed

OK. I like the examples and the paste of the course. I could follow the course properly. But the code is updated and you can not run the projects anymore from provided resources. The last project does not run at all when following instructions because the engine API must have changed. Also, the code given by the instructor is very messy and hard to debug, full of side effects and lengthy functions that do many unrelated things. Please don't write your code like that.

This course is outdated, I had to update his code to Swift 4.2 and iOS 12.1 a relatively easy task. I wish the author would have talked about SCNProgram with Metal shaders and update his course to include ARKit. The course is well thought and comprenhensive I would highly recommend it to any serious iOS game developer. Thank you Ibram

The instructor does a fantastic job and the content is valuable. It's a great course. I highly recommend. Bear in mind the course is at least two iOS versions old, so there is a bit of a difference. Downloading the source as a starting point requires some updating to get it to compile. Additionally, the last course seems to have a collision issue. Despite this the course is well worth the time and money. It's fantastic!

Great in-depth walk through the concepts with clear explanations of the building blocks used to create a real project. It even includes challenges for you to try and do yourself. Only feedback is I wish the instructor would explain a little more how he finds some of the values for setting up the locations of items. It would also be nicer to do a more "refactoring" based coding approach rather than just peeling off layers from the final solution and showing us one thing at a time.

By Ronnie Pitman on 11/22/2016

The content of this course is excellent and voluminous. The code is out of date, however. Xcode will convert the code to Swift 3 and automatically update most of it for you. If you plan to type along as the code is presented, be prepared to pause the video constantly in order to keep up. Instructor hasn't answered any forum questions for the past 5 months.

At first I wanted to give 5 stars, because the explanations are absolutely clear, the steps forward are straight and there is a great relation between theory, explaining concepts on the one side and pragmatic live coding solving practical problems on the other hand. Almost perfect, but there is one showstopper: Some aspects of the challenges, that I mostly liked, had huge demotivating parts. For example you load a Node from DAE.File and it looks very strange on the scene. There was NO EXPLANATION WHY and NO EXPLANATION why a specific rotation, scaling or positioning (with very specific values, sometimes in combination) is the solution. You can't figure out, why a scaling factor of 0.125 is the solution, this is demotivating from my point of view. The language is perfectly to understand also for non-native (english) speakers. One last complaint: After 40 lessons I started to hate the intro music for the lessons, annoying. But to sum up: This is a very cool course and you can learn a lot.

I have never seen such an in-depth course for SceneKit before. I had always wondered how to get started with it, but never could because there isn't enough information/tutorials on it on the web. This course was the kickstart I needed. There was only 1 thing I didn't like! And that was that he moved very quickly. If your typing speed isn't superhuman, you will constantly have to play and pause the video to copy what he wrote. However, this is not a complete setback. I, for one, am simply fast at typing, and had no hard time with it. I liked this speed much better than the slow and time-consuming typers who make tutorials. Also, because of his speeding up the typing, he was able to pack a lot more code and explanation into the short videos. I would suggest getting this course if you would like to get started with SceneKit. It is all the way from first-timer to an Intermediate level. If you are slow to learn, this is not the course for you. But if you are already pretty advanced at SceneKit, this may also not be the course for you. (P.S. – This course has a brief introduction to SpriteKit, too!)
