Our take

Based on the ratings of 352 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2021. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short beginner course, about 5 hours across 27 lectures, built around chords and the number system. Instructor Kingsley B-Nkrumah is a gospel, contemporary and jazz pianist, and he shows how to read chord charts and move progressions into all 12 keys. Reviewers describe it as a foundation for gospel and R&B piano rather than a general intro. No classical or pop songs are taught, and the 3,036 students who enrolled get into chord theory fairly early.

Praise is steady. Reviewers call Kingsley patient and clear, and one with seven years of academic music school says he finally made scales and progressions easy to memorize. A church keyboardist found the examples relatable. The complaints are specific, though. One reviewer says there is no ear training or interval work at all, despite the name. Another says he speaks fast and the captions miss words. Two mention finger numbering that contradicts the image on screen. A 1-star review calls the content thin and says he shows off more than he teaches.

The course was last updated in January 2021, but piano chords do not go out of date much. With 352 reviews averaging 4.8, and 246 of them five stars, it looks like a safe pick for anyone who wants chord fluency fast. It is short and has no quizzes or exercises, so progress depends on the 15 to 20 minutes of daily practice the requirements ask for. Choose something else if ear training is the real goal.

Best forBeginners who want chords, progressions and the number system in all 12 keys, especially for gospel, R&B or church playing.
Skip it ifYou want real ear training or interval work, classical pieces, or a course with quizzes and exercises.

Pros

  • Short at about 5 hours and 27 lectures, so a beginner can finish it in weeks

  • Some say he talks fast, captions miss words, and finger numbering contradicts the image
Where have you been all my life?? I wish I would have learned the piano this way years ago. I wouldn't have gotten so frustrated.
Ann knight, a student

Beginner level fits, no theory needed, though it moves quickly into chord theory and expects 15 to 20 minutes of practice daily.

I am 38 years old and have always loved Piano music so i decided to just try an online course to see if I can make heads nor tails of all the keys and how to use them! , I find Kingsley to be a wonderful tutor and explains everything so well and in a great cheerful relaxed manner I have watched this course a lot of times and I am now at a much better place with piano than i was 5 Weeks ago Totally recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn

Very easy & precise instructions! Going over this helped me discover the missing pieces to my theory: the lessons are very well organized and he does a great job of showing the root to the madness which now i dont view as madness!! i would recommend to any musician who feels like they are at a plateau. Thanks!

I came into this course with absolute zero knowledge about piano or any related instrument and I must say this course was exactly what i needed to get me started. I find the course setup very interactive and the instructor makes it really easy to comprehend the lessons. I am super excited and glad that I signed up! If you are a beginner like myself, looking to start from the basics, this course is definitely for you.

Great beginner level course. Kingsley really takes his time to walk you through the underlying principles of scales, chords, and everything else. I have been playing keyboard on-and-off, mostly self-taught and didn't have good technique and theory. This course does well to balance both to make sure you have a good grasp of the foundation that sets you up for future success. I recommend this course for EVERY beginner!

The demonstration of the left hand numbering didn’t align with the image. He said that the pinky is number 1 and the thumb is number 5 but the image showed the reverse. Which one is it? I previously learned that the left thumb is number 1 and the pinky is number 5. The contradiction is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5.

This is like a foundation course for gospel/R&B piano. It starts from the absolute beginner level and quickly advances to a lot of chord theory and applications in the gospel music tradition. Our teacher also demonstrated a lot of advanced playing throughout the course. No classical or pop songs were taught. If that is the kind of teaching you want you will definitely learn a lot from this course.

I had 7 years of academic music school, If only someone would explain me so easily how to memorize scales and play progressions and read accords I would play piano much more freely and could play my favorite song too. Now I can. Thank you Kingsley for such simple and understandable course.

I don't even own a keyboard yet. I've watched several introductory lessons showing the names of the keys. This lesson was the best of the bunch. Because: - Mentioned to hold a bubble and not break it. Result was a more relaxed hand than the idea of holding a ball as others suggested. - Included the 1st lesson of playing with each hand on the keyboard from C to G and back again. Lovely. Can't wait to get my keyboard. - I liked the diagrams and brief written explanations that showed up - In another introductory lesson there was a tip that made sense to me that was not included here. The tip was that to play with a pinkly finger that has strength it is not necessary to exercise it constantly to build up muscle. Instead, simply turn your wrist outward a bit and drop the wrist a bit. Can't quote me on this tip as I'm not sure if I remember correctly about dropping the wrist and I haven't tried it myself yet. :-) Really enjoyed this lesson and I like the content and the way Kingsley B-Nkrumah speaks because unlike some others I've heard he doesn't say things that are so simple and obvious as to sound like he is condescendingly speaking to a moron. Also, his friendly and non-abrasive tone is much appreciated without the bravado and hoopla some others may feel necessary to get people's attention. Great job well done. Now I better get a keyboard soon to continue with the lessons :-) I want to learn enough to play at least to accompany myself reading or rapping stuff I have been writing.

I stopped after the first four or five lesssons to practice and apply what I had to learn.. I was surprised of what I can play now. That is the perfect course for anybody who wants to learn to play without a music sheets.

Very good build up through the lessons. Concentration on playing in all keys is emphasised and well explained. This course is a valuable resource. Inclusion of numerous examples with chord progressions is good and the left and right hand patterns are well explained.

Excellent Intro course to learn the basics for Contemporary & Gospel styles of Piano music(which can be translated to many other styles of music). Really hope the course will be updated with some Intermediary/Advance material? Or hopefully the instructor will release Intermediary/Advanced courses in the future, he really knows his stuff and actually explains concepts very well so the students can understand!

By Nana IGWT on 7/22/2020

- Yes I've learnt an exercise that will help in having ma fingers being independent and flexible on the keys. - Very understandable as shown in the video. - Having an assignment to do is very good and I believe it will challenge me to revise after watching the video course.
