Our take
Based on the ratings of 2,586 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
Justin Mitchel's free Try Django course walks you through building a blog with Django 2.2 in about 4 hours and 55 lectures. It covers the pieces every Django app needs: views and URLs, templates, models, CRUD, forms, users and foreign keys, and publishing. The syllabus assumes basic Python and a little HTML and CSS, so it suits people who can already write a simple script and want to see how a web framework fits together. It was last updated in April 2019, so expect some differences from current Django releases.
Reviewers like how clear and direct the teaching is. Several call it easy to follow, one says the teach-by-doing approach helped the main Django concepts sink in, and another calls it far better than a different free Django course they tried first. The main complaint is speed. The instructor talks fast, uses a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and one reviewer says the cursor was so dim they could barely follow what he was clicking. Expect to rewind. One student was disappointed there is no user login section, and a two star review mentions unanswered questions in the Q&A and more than one project on the go at once.
Value is hard to argue with, since it costs nothing. Next to the longer Django courses on our list, like the Full Stack Web Developer Bootcamp or the Practical Guide, this is much shorter and stops well before authentication or REST APIs. Treat it as a warm-up: a few evenings to find out whether Django suits you before paying for something longer and more current. The 4.4 rating from about 2,600 reviews, with under 5 percent giving one or two stars, says most people came away happy with that trade.
Pros
- Free, and one reviewer says it beats another free Django intro they tried first
- Builds one real blog app end to end, from URLs and templates to forms and foreign keys
- Clear, direct explanations that several students say made Django easy to understand
- Short: 55 lectures in about 4.3 hours, easy to finish in a few evenings
Cons
- Last updated April 2019 and built on Django 2.2, so expect differences from current releases
- Fast pace with heavy use of hotkeys and a dim cursor; reviewers say they rewound a lot
- No user login section, and one review reports student questions going unanswered
As a free course, this is above expectations. The trainer taught everything so well.
Beginner in Django, not in programming: basic Python and some HTML/CSS are expected before the first lecture.

Course Description
Try Django 2.2 is the latest in a line of Try Django series. This one covers the latest version of Django by building a blog application.
Python is one of the best programming languages in the planet. Why? For a few reasons:
It's proven & scalable
It's open-source
The Internet of Things and Raspberry Pi
It's leading the change for future technology
Proven & Scalable: Python runs Instagram's backend. It also run's Pinterest's, NASA, Mozilla, and countless others. It scales.
Open-Source: Open source technology means **anyone** can change it. Literally anyone. Are you in New Zealand? Yup you can change the code. Are you in Argentina? Yup, go ahead change it. Open-source changes the game for everyone because we can all use it.
Internet of Things (IoT) and Raspberry PI Connected devices are coming in waves. The easiest way to connect to these devices is using the Raspberry Pi and writing code in Python. Python is versatile so it makes controlling real-world objects with Raspberry Pi simple.
Pushing the Bounds of Future Technology Python is leading the charge in artificial intelligence with things like OpenCV, TensorFlow, PyBrain, and many others.
Sooo... Python is cool but why is this called Try Django? What's Django?
***
Django will be the backbone for your projects.
***
If you work with Python, the chances are good you need internet-connected data that stored securely and is reliable. This is where Django comes in. Django is a web-framework that can handle all of your data and handle it better than any web framework out there.
Django is the #1 Web Framework for Python for a reason: it's easy enough for the beginners and yet powerful enough for the pros. Instagram uses Python by way of Django. So does Pinterest. And Nasa. And Mozilla. It may not be the only technology that they use but its... the backbone of them all.
If Python is the future behind underlying technology, Django will be it's close cousin and if you love Python, Django will soon become your friend.
Cheers!
Justin

It all started with an idea. I wanted freedom... badly. Freedom from work, freedom from boredom, and, most of all, the freedom to choose. This simple idea grew to define me; it made me become an entrepreneur.
As I strived to gain freedom, overtime I realized that with everything that you do you can either (1) convince someone, somehow, to do it with you or (2) figure out how to do it yourself.
Due to a lack of financial resources (and probably the ability to convince people to do high quality work for free), I decided to learn. Then learn some more. Then some more. My path of learning website design started a long time ago. And yes, it was out of need not desire. I believed I needed a website for a company that I started. So I learned how to do it. The company died, my skills lived on... and got better and better.
It took me a while after learning web design (html/css) to actually start learning programming (web application, storing "data", user logins, etc). I tinkered with Wordpress, believing it could be a "user" site, but I was mistaken. Sure there are/were hacks for that, but they were hacks/work-arounds and simply not-what-wordpress-was-indended-to-be. Wordpress is for blogs/content. Plain and simple.

The starting point was difficult to setup in my system. As a free course, this is above expectations. The trainer taught everything so well. Before starting this course, there was another free course on Udemy which was so pathetic. Later I found this to be more effective starting from the basics of django. A big thanks to my instructor. :)

I would like to thank you Justin Mitchel very much for this amazing course, it was very useful and helped me a lot understanding main Django concepts and how this framework goes, as a Django beginner, i would say that this course also made me like it more, and i am going to dive deeper. The course covers many concepts in a very simplified way and the fact that it teaches by doing is great. Thanks.

This was a great course to take as an introduction to Django... I now have an idea of how I can create a website where I have SquareSpace-like features in some areas of the site... while being free to build more experimentally with code in other areas... My only issue was that the instructor works way too fast for an introduction... yes he acknowledges this... but seems to put it on the student if they can't keep up... Meanwhile... I could deal with the fast-talking... I had more problems with the use of shortcuts and hotkeys... with a very dim cursor that I could barely see... so at times... lines of text would magically appear... which also wouldn't be so bad if we didn't then jump around between multiple files... all with the same names... which I get is part of the underlying structure... but the rapid-fire instruction and jumping around led me to have to rewind and rewatch sections just to catch something simple that I missed... Again... aside from the rapid pace... I did feel that this was a course worth taking if you're interested in exploring Django as a web dev option...

overall was good but i felt in some areas when you decided to use some code and then replace it with another you could explain some more or if there is no time for it adding some links to read about some challenging topics for a beginner

This course is great. It's a sort of trouble shooting type of course. Because of this course I can now say I know Django. He teaches us to do a same thing in different ways. Best example is html, and Django forms. Some concepts he goes so deep that I couldn't understand it at first time. But when I see the same video again and again I was be able to understand.

This is a sincere course, and I thoroughly enjoyed as well as learned a lot from it. I'm a beginner (in Python), so I had to pause, practice, research and experiment a lot of times, but I won't complain, because this is course for people who already have a solid grasp on Python with all the pre-requisites clearly defined beforehand. The pace matches the course's skill level. A great primer for Django.

Wonderful course. I enjoyed every bit of it especially the 'Handling Dynamic URL Errors' aspect. It helped me understand the things I miss out which allows Django to return Errors all the time. The tutor goes straight to the point, no time to waste. The isn't a course for beginners and that's what I think but if you have a little knowledge about Python and Django, you will enjoy it. The most important aspects of Django all taught in about 4 hrs and that's wonderful.
