Course Description

Learn everything that you need to know for extending Unreal's editor and create custom menu entries, slate widgets, extend world outliner, register custom icons and much more for boosting your efficiency that your project and your team needs.

In the first part of the course, we’ll focus on the actions to assets and we’ll begin with exploring the existing scripting libraries like UEditorAssetLibrary and UEditirUtilityLibrary in Unreal to help us to achieve some basic quick asset actions.

Then we'll look at how to add in our custom menu entries to help us search and delete unused assets and delete empty folders when we right mouse button click a folder. With the ability like this, we'll then dive into slate and create different slate widgets in a custom editor tab that we registered. We'll also cover how to use EditorUtilityWidgets and create our own algorithms to help us quickly create materials from code.

In the second part of the course, we’re going to use the combination of EditorUtilityWidgets and EditorActorSubsystem to help us achieve actor batch selection, actor batch duplication, and randomize actor transform. Then we’ll use the skills and knowledge we learned to create actor selection lock through extending level editor actor menu, custom editor hot keys and extending world outliner.

After this course, you will be able to create any custom editor tools that you or your team needs for better efficiency when working inside of Unreal.

When I started my career as a technical artist, I was driven by a deep desire to make a significant difference in the work I was doing. Specifically, I wanted to help my co-workers enhance their work efficiency and productivity within the Unreal engine. Leveraging my prior experience as a teacher, I discovered my knack for simplifying intricate concepts and explaining them in a way that was accessible to anyone willing to learn.

As my aspirations evolved and I contemplated becoming an online instructor, those around me frequently asked, "What kind of instructor do you envision yourself becoming?"

In my view, I firmly believe that no subject is too daunting when you have a knowledgeable instructor who can guide you through each and every step. By employing a clear, step-by-step approach, anyone can acquire mastery in their desired area, including Unreal.

That is precisely the kind of instructor I aspire to be—an instructor who empowers learners by providing comprehensive guidance and enabling them to confidently navigate their Unreal journey.

First of all, this course is truly awesome. It provides a clear and practical guideline for learning plugins that involve editor interaction. That being said, I believe advanced programmers might quickly find alternative or more efficient ways to achieve similar—if not better—results. At times, some interactions seemed designed mainly for simplicity, whereas more robust implementations could have been possible. However, don’t get me wrong: I still learned a lot of valuable things and was able to build on that knowledge afterward. So, if you’re looking for a solid starting point, I definitely recommend it.

To be honest, the rank should be 5 star for the lecture. But I found some important things left. When I was on Section 87, I suddenly realized that all the actions cannot be undo. For editor tools, I think the undo function is really necessary. Would you planned to update some chapter about it?

Very good and solid overview of UE & Slate. There are a few issues when it comes to outdated videos for 5.3 (Reference clean-up) and at one point I ran into a crash that is only addressed in the Congratulation Section and should really be covered earlier. (Editor Window stayed open when closing the Editor, causing a crash due to having no Array to feed into it).

Good course. He moves fast, but it's a video, you can pause and go back. He's pretty active on here as well, so questions can be asked and answered. I found the course informative and interesting. The course instructor goes over the topics, breaks down what he intends to achieves, then achieves it. It has a nice natural flow to it. Its a tutorial so some of the coding practices aren't prefect, maybe could be mentioned, but otherwise very good.

Vince is super receptive to questions and feedback. He is also actively replying to comments in his discord server. In addition, his courses are always condensed with details and content, it took me about 3 weeks to complete the course and it has really helped me understand the topic to an intermediate level. His information's are really valuable as it is rare to see advanced topics like these covered online. I hope to see more advanced and specialized topics in technical art like this in Udemy.

Great course and great introduction to plugin creation. As a C# tools programmer that is new to unreal and C++, I felt this was a great course to begin learning and introduces everything well. The sections are broken down well into sizable videos. Having a link to each videos github, makes it easier to reference if I found I went wrong somewhere. That's much quicker than scrubbing through a video. The only critique is the state of SuperManager.cpp at the end. I feel from a code review perspective, that this could be showing better coding practices, as a pose to one big long file doing most of the work. Just hiding everything with regions, isn't the best. Another great thing, was having the sections where you suggest us to add more (the option challenges). I felt were a great way to break up the learning and force us to think for ourselves, rather than just consume the lectures. Thank you.

After having some C# tools developing experience in a proprietary engine at my previous job, I was pretty intimidated when researching tooling in UE and C++. Each time I looked at youtube vids or documents, I felt quite overwhelmed. I just finished this amazing course and thanks to it I am feeling confident that I can get started on a few tools that I would like to make to improve my team's workflows. I can highly recommend taking this course!

This is a tighty organized course that gives you a good grounding from which to begin your Slate / Unreal Editor extension journey. It's a vast topic, but Vince does a great job at teaching you important fundamentals and useful API areas of interest while building utilities that are actually quite useful. Make sure you do the challenges, and at the end of the course you should have a pretty good idea about where you need to go for further advancement. Thanks, Vince!

So, 5 stars does this course NO justice. It's worth so much more. This course was amazing!! The Instructor knows their stuff and lays it out in an easy to follow and understand fashion. I have never touched Slate before this course, and I found the section on Slate so very easy to follow and understand. I wish more courses like this existed. Thank you so much for putting this together!!!!

I like how Vince patiently explained the coding proccess not only for the new module or new function, but he also explained the code we previously created before when we were using them again, that really helps us refresh our works. Though this class is not face to entry level c++ coder, I'd still recommend anyone who want to learn coding in UE5 to give this course a shot, since Vince had really nicely and thoroughly explains in every steps we were in, and he also provides the code changing log in every sections and sub-sections, so it's really easy to follow-up even for a c++ newbie like me. Thanks for this amazing course, Vince you're awesome!
