Course Description

Ready to create games in Unreal Engine?

This course will teach you how to make a survival horror game, teaching all skillsets the fundamentals of game creation through one of the most popular genres in game media. We will go step by step through the game-making process to show how we can set up a character from scratch, well-designed gameplay, classic and advanced horror mechanics, artificial intelligence, and a lot more.

In this course, you will:

  • Make a complete game

  • Create a playable character from scratch

  • An interaction system that allows you to easily assign objects in the world to be interactable

  • Create many horror mechanics to customize and choose from such as: multiple ways to open doors, flickering lights, crouching and sprinting, jumpscares, footsteps, leaning, finding notes, etc.

  • Use the environment to hide from AI (e.g. hiding in lockers)

  • Learn more game-creation knowledge such as objectives and cutscenes

  • Learn how to design and create a good level, going over lighting, post processing, atmosphere, particle effects, and fog.

  • Go over some fun mechanics from famous horror games such as Outlast, Amnesia, Resident Evil, and FNAF

  • Create smart AI enemies to add suspense and objective to your game.

  • A very detailed inventory system with 3D item inspection (that includes rotating models)

  • Many other fun activities such as game over screens, regenerative health, main menu, making 2D images out of 3D meshes, and more.

  • Master the ability to create a game in your vision.

We're going to dive straight in, starting a game from scratch and building ourselves an empire. It's going to be an incredibly fun journey, and at the end of it, you'll have the knowledge needed to create games on your own, from start to finish. You'll learn how much easier it can be to use Unreal Engine once you've got the hang of it, and then nothing will be in the way of you and your dreams of making and finishing video games.

Why Take This Course?

Even if survival horror games aren't your interest, this course provides the steps necessary to create a video game from start to finish. You will learn many fundamental things about the game-making process and will be able to utilize that knowledge in the projects you work on from here on out. I'm excited to see what you can create because I understand what you're capable of. So are you ready?

Bro, the way you have everything set up is so dopamine lol. Each mini lesson is a hit, cause I just learned how to do something, and I'm progressing on my game. Thanks for teaching well too. Quick, precise, no fluff words. -Here is an update to the review. Absolutely awesome. It is teaching me so much of the first game I'm wanting to make for my Studio. And it gives me the opportunity to reuse mechanics and other things so I'm essentially investing in reusable assets I've made. 10/10!

Course done on UE 5.6 > Doable, but keep an eye open for the QA for help. You may have to check some tutorials online to bridge from his version and the current one. This course is great if you have a minimum of knowledge and comprehension of Unreal and Game making in general. It's perfect to push your limits, if you have limited comprehension of Blueprints too. The teacher explains really well and has good knowledge of Game Design, but don't expect to be taken by the hand at every step of the way. This is not the course to learn about Blueprints and coding logic. As for what you learn, you'll have a strong base to push forward with whatever kind of game you want to make afterward. It covers enough scenarios to take this base as a template and move forward. Anywho, I had a lot of fun! :)

Learned a lot. Some of the things are a little out dated because of the new Unreal Engine 5 versions but it still taught me so much of what I need to know to make my horror game and use other updated sources as complimentary resources to complete some of the sections. Highly recommend.

A solid overview of some basic components of 3D game design. Some functions will have changed in UE5 most notably you'll have to use the advanced input system for controls, change collision on the physics door so that it doesn't interact with the floor and tick "use accelleration for paths" in the Nav Movement section of your Ai Controller to have the animation blueprints play when your enemy characters move. What the course is lacking in is a decent synopsis of how behaviour trees and decorators work as well as techniques for level design and best practices regarding optimization such as limiting tick use and casting. Overall easy things to find elsewhere though. If it's your first dive into anything game related brush up on basic coding and common blueprint functions first. Overall 9/10 and well rounded considering it's brevity.

Great course. I learned a lot from it and I'm grateful. However, a complete beginner with no experience in programming could feel a bit lost due to lack of explanations of basic programming fundamentals but I faced no such issue having 4 years of experience with the Unity game engine. The best thing about this course is that most of the basic elements of a horror game are covered but I'm not giving this a five-star for a few reasons. First, this only teaches us to make a first-person game which severely limits the game's genre. A camera system with multiple 3rd person views and setting up of character animations would've made this a complete guide for a complete beginner. Besides this I did face a few bugs here and there with AI, locks and inventory system but nothing I couldn't fix myself. The comments and discussions helped a lot as an Unreal Engine beginner. However, I have nothing bad to say about the course itself. It has been a great learning and a solid foundation for understanding blueprints and unreal engine in general.

This course is outdated so when you are going in like I am using unreal engine 5.2 & 5.3 be aware that you need to work around on some features. That being said I really learned a lot in this course even though it is outdated. I really like that it was explained what to do and what better not to do in games, specifically design decisions and what makes a game good or bad (quote "Dont make your game a battery hunting simulation") which is really good. From a coding perspective I probably would have ended up coding a few things differently, but despite that I learned quite a lot of new approaches to things. All in all if you are eager to try to work around the outdated things yourself this course is for you! I certainly learned a lot more in here trying to adapt the UE4 features to UE5.3 than in most of my previous courses where you are guided pretty much through the complete project. Thus, I would recommend taking the course, had fun following a face paced course!

The course was very good, no complaints about the teacher or how the course was done. The only issues were some differences as I'm using UE 5.2 and the course was done in UE 4, but it was nothing that a look in the comments or a quick google couldn't fix. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to create a horror game, or even a spy type sneak around game. It has some really great mechanics in it that I'm sure I will come back to reference many times in the future.

This was a very nice course! It took me through everything that makes a great start to a indie horror, and is helping a lot for my college course, where we can make a game of our own and this will be a nice way for me personally to get into indie game dev! Granted, some minor things that made it difficult for myself, just as pacing or some things not working as intended, even if the video shown me it was... This was visible at attacking AI, where aborting both for player range made it bug out, meaning I had to look for an answer elsewhere and set it to lower priority (Thanks to the comments) however, I definitely didn't know this but hey, for starting out in Game Development... I am sure there is gonna be many things that may need to be redone just to work so I wasn't too bothered about it personally as I am interested nonetheless. I hope sometime I can get another course, but for now I have a mini project to get on with & I am very appreciative for the course, Thank You!

Well prepared course. Easy to follow, good explanation, clean blueprint coding and the instructor clearly has good knowledge in UE. If you are completely beginner, maybe you will get confuse and overwhelmed. But, do come back when you have some experience. You'll realize that this course is really awesome and you can learn a lot from this course. Recommended!

Changing my review from 3 to 4 and comments. Mr Aidan does a good job on exploring Blueprints on UE5, it's not his fault UE5 is still fragile, and even more on Linux. That said, this course IMHO is advertised wrong, this is a course for people with the basic knowledge about UE which can benefit from Blueprint expertise and prototyping knowledge, which Mr Aidan does a very good job. Do not use this course as your introductory course, it may get frustrating. One star was removed, since the content was not update after UE changed and some stuff like headbob and physical doors are not going to work, editor does not have the same options anymore. I hope this gets updated for 5.1, it's a very good course about UE blueprints, which are waaaaay faster than compiling C++, specially on Linux. And a good technique to prototype ideas.
